Symphony of Sorrowful Songs - Henryk Górecki - 1st movement

Lento—Sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile (only the second part of the 1st movement) Typically 27 minutes in duration, the first movement equals the combined length of the second and third movements,[9] and is based on a late-15th century lament of Mary from the Lysagora Songs collection of the Holy Cross Monastery in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. Comprising three thematic sections, the movement opens with a canon in ten parts using a 24-bar melody in the Aeolian mode on E. It begins with double basses, and each succeeding entry occurs one measure later (ie, a new entry begins every 25 measures), starting a fifth above the last. After the canon reaches a full 10 parts, it works its way back to a single pitch. The soprano enters in the second section and builds to a climax on the final word, at which point the strings enter forcefully with the climax of the opening canon. The third section of the movement (Lento—Cantabile semplice) is a long dénouement that also winds down to a single pitch.
Henryk Górecki - Concerto for piano and strings

Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (Polish pronunciation: [ˈxɛnrɨk mʲiˈkɔwaj ɡuˈrɛtski]) (December 6, 1933 -- November 12, 2010) was a Polish composer. He studied at the State Higher School of Music in Katowice between 1955 and 1960. In 1968, he joined the faculty and rose to provost before resigning in 1979. Górecki became a leading figure of the Polish avant-garde during the post-Stalin cultural thaw. His Webernian-influenced serialist works of the 1950s and 1960s were characterized by an adherence to dissonant modernism, and drew influence from Luigi Nono, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Krzysztof Penderecki and Kazimierz Serocki. He continued in this direction throughout the 1960s, but by the mid 1970s had changed to a less complex sacred minimalist sound, exemplified by the transitional Symphony No. 2 and the hugely popular Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs). This later style developed through several other distinct phases, from such works as his 1979 Beatus Vir, to the choral 1981 hymn Miserere, the 1993 Kleines Requiem für eine Polka and his recent requiem Good Night. Until 1992, Górecki was viewed as a remote and fiery figure known only to a few connoisseurs, primarily as one of a number of composers responsible for sparking a postwar renaissance in Polish music. In 1992, 15 years after it was composed, a recording of his Third Symphony, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs—recorded with soprano Dawn Upshaw and released to commemorate the memory of those lost during the Holocaust ...

Adam Aston sings Henryk Wars - Panie Janie, 1938

„Panie Janie" (Mister John!) is one of three great hit songs from „Zapomniana melodia" („A Forgotten Tune") -- which was one of the last musical comedies in pre-war Poland (1938). The music was composed by Henryk Wars as a free jazzy evaluation of the popular European children song „Frère Jacques": Frère Jacques. Frère Jacques, (bis) Dormez-vous ? (bis) Sonnez les matines, (bis) Ding, ding, dong ! (bis). Adam Aston sings in Polish: Panie Janie! Panie Janie! Niech pan wstanie (bis) Tylko lenie Jeszcze spią Wszystkie dzwony bija bim-bam-bom - which translates in English: Mister John, Mister John, wake up, wake up! Only the lazy bones are still asleep, when all the bells are ringing, bim-bam-bom. In the movie the song is sung by Helena Grossówna, Jadwiga Andrzejewska and the student girls chorus, just before the boring music class they all are waiting to attend. The dance scene - performed by Helena Grossówna, as a witty parody of the famous choreography from the movie „Varsity Drag"- can be seen on You Tube (piszczyk90 Polish pre-war movie clip collection). Recording: Adam Aston & Syrena Rekord Orch., dir. Henryk Wars -- Panie Janie! (Music by Henryk Wars, Lyrics by Ludwik Starski), Syrena-Electro 1938
Symphony of Sorrowful Songs - Henryk Górecki - 3st movement

Lento e largo—Tranquillissimo (only the second part of the 3st movement) The tempo of the third movement is not as slow as the previous two, and subtle changes in dynamism and mode make it more complex and involving than it may at first appear. It comprises three verses in A minor[1] and, like the first movement, is constructed from evolving variations on a simple motif. The melody is established in the opening verse, and the second and third verses revisit the cradling motifs of the second movement. As in the second movement, the motifs are built up from inversions of plain triads and seventh chords stretching across several octaves. As the soprano sings the final words, the key changes to a pure diatonic A major which accompanies, in writer David Ellis's words, the "ecstatic final stanza":[1] O sing for him / God's little song-birds / Since his mother cannot find him. And you, God's little flowers / May you blossom all around / that my son may a sleep happy sleep.[16]
Gorécki - Symphonie No.3 - 2nd Movement

Henryk Gorécki (1933) is a polish composer of contemporary classical music. Górecki's most popular piece is his "Third Symphony", also known as the "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs". The work is slow and contemplative, and each of the three movements are composed for orchestra and solo soprano. The libretto for the first movement is taken from a 15th century lament, while second movement uses the words of a teenage girl, Helena Błażusiak, which she wrote on the wall of a Gestapo prison cell in Zakopane to invoke the protection of the Virgin Mary. The third uses the text of a Silesian folk song which describes the pain of a mother searching for a son killed in the Silesian uprisings. The dominant themes of the symphony are motherhood and separation through war. While the first and third movements are written from the perspective of a parent who has lost a child, the second movement is from that of a child separated from a parent. The first paintings are from El Greco (1541-1614) - a painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. El Greco's dramatic and expressionistic style was met with puzzlement by his contemporaries but found appreciation in the 20th century. El Greco is regarded as a precursor of both Expressionism and Cubism, while his personality and works were a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Nikos Kazantzakis. El Greco has been characterized by modern scholars as an artist so individual that he belongs to no ...

Ghetto - Tadeusz Faliszewski & Henryk Wars Orch. - Ghetto, 1932

Tadeusz Faliszewski & Orchestra dir. by Henryk Wars - Ghetto, Tango (muz. A.Piotrowski, text S.Mar), Syrena-Electro 1932 NOTE: This tango's title „Ghetto" represents the original meaning this old Italian word „borghetto", translating as "part of the city, borough". Alternative etymology is from another Italian word for „slag" („getto" or „ghetto"). Many European and Middle Eastern cities once had a historical Jewish quarter and some still have it. In Venice the island where the slag was stored, was also the area of the Jewish cofinement. This first, as it seems, „Jewish ghetto" in Europe existed because Jews were viewed not only as that they were foreigners due to their non-Christian beliefs in a Renaissance Christian environment, but also their involvement in commercial enterprises might be a threat to a local business. In the 19th century, Jewish ghettos in Europe were progressively abolished, and their walls demolished. The Germans reinstituted Jewish ghettos during World War II in Eastern Europe, turning them into de-facto concentration camps and death camps in the Holocaust. These Nazi ghettos used to concentrate Jews before extermination sometimes coincided with traditional Jewish ghettos and Jewish quarters. Expediency was the key factor for the Nazis in the Final Solution. This very typical, impressive Polish tango tells a story about a provincial little town of Kałuszyn, where poor tailor Abram lives. He is unhappily in love with Estera, a daughter of old Berel ...

Pierwszy krok to aparaty słuchowe migowy.blogspot.com wtorek 13 maja 2008 Czy tańczący Damian będzie słyszał? Damian Piasek - niesłyszący tancerz, który chce zostać pierwszym w Polsce głuchym instruktorem tańca. Kilka tygodni temu wystąpił w eliminacjach do programu You can dance. Dzięki Państwa szczodrości i fundacji TVN Nie jesteś sam Damian przeszedł szczegółowe badania i dowiedział się, mógłby mieć wszczepiony implant ślimakowy ucha, by usłyszeć muzykę, do której tańczy. Tango polonais...- original: Orch. Henryk GOLD !

Original, Polish version of "Nie ja -- nie ty !" (Neither me , nor you !), was first sung by Lena Żelichowska (1910-1958; photo in the clip !) at Warsaw "Cyganeria" theatre, 1934. All dramatic accents presented with passion especially in the second, instrumental part of the present recording were conceived by an outstanding musician and director of the Polish Columbia orchestra at that time, Henryk Gold. Vocal refrain by a minor and completely forgotten singer, Olgierd Lech.
