The Heptones - Book of Rules (extended)

Taken from 'King Of My Town' - Culture Press - Lyrics: Isn't it strange how princesses and kings Can clown their capers in a sawdust ring, Just like poor people like you and me Will be builders for eternity. Each is given a bag of tools, Shapeless lives and a book of rules. Each must make his life as flowing ink Tumbling black on a stepping stone, Just like poor people like you and me Will be builders for eternity Each is given a bag of tools, Shapeless lives and a book of rules. Look where the rain is falling from the sky I know the sun will be only missing for a while And I say small people like you and me Will be builders for eternity Each is given a bag of tools, Shapeless lives and a book of rules. Written by Barry Llewellyn and Harry Johnson

Alton Ellis & The Heptones - Mr Ska Beana

Alton Ellis, also known as "The Godfather, Mr Soul, Soul of Jamaica was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1944. He started off recording with Coxsone Dodd, but eventually moved over to Coxsone's arch rival, Duke Reid, recording on the Treasure Isle label. Tunes like "Dance Crasher" and "Girl I've Got A Date", gave Duke Reid his first opportunity to pass Dodd in popularity stakes, as Jamaica's heaviest sound system. By 1966, ska had given birth to the slower rocksteady and Alton Ellis and Jackie Mittoo were credited with it. In an interview, Alton recalls "One evening in the studio, the bass man didn't show up, so Jackie Mittoo, the keyboardist had to play the bass pattern on the piano with his left hand, but he couldn't hold it steady and we all thought the line was so fresh and nice. When the bass player turned up next time, Jackie insisted that he play what Jackie was playing with his left hand. That's how rocksteady was born -- we called it so that night."

The Heptones - Mr President

Heptones - Mr President The Heptones were a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae vocal trio most active in the 1960s and early 1970s. Leroy Sibbles, Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn first came together as "The Hep Ones" in 1965 in Kingston but they soon changed their name to "The Heptones". The name was chosen by Morgan after seeing a Heptones Tonic bottle lying in a pile of refuse.
