Please watch; this is pretty funny. I installed a Great Blue Heron decoy on the edge of my pond when I first stocked it with goldfish. This shows what a wonderful job the decoy does in scaring away herons. NOT! I share all of my goldfish (I am not stupid enough to have Koi) with Herons, Kingfisher's and Osprey. I started with 10 cent feeder fish, and now have thousands of goldfish. The birds, ducks included, keep the fish population under control. Yes, I hate to see one of my foot-long goldfish go down the skinny neck of the Heron (alive!) but that is life with a large pond. I have learned to deal with it.

Three short videos of a Great Horned Owl attacking a female Great Blue Heron while she incubates eggs in the pre-dawn darkness on April 8 and 9, 2012. The footage was captured by a live-streaming cam that can film even in low light conditions above the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Sapsucker Woods Pond in Ithaca, New York. www.allaboutbirds.org The first and third clips show the owl's approach; the second clip shows the female heron responding aggressively to the owl's continued presence after the initial attack. The sound you hear is the heron reacting to the attacks, as well as a second heron vocalizing in response. The female heron survived without noticeable injury. The cam provides a 24/7 view of the lives of these wild birds during the nesting season, including challenges from predators. Although Great Horned Owls have been known to take Great Blue Herons as prey, in the great majority of cases they eat smaller mammals like rodents, hares, and rabbits. This Heron catches a big fish and struggles to eat it, with it stuck wriggling in the neck for some time. Finishes with the Heron shaking it's wings to finally swallow in a fantastic super smooth slow motion. Grey herons are large, striking birds often spotted standing motionless at the water's edge. Having found a suitable location, herons stand and wait patiently for the right moment to stab passing prey with their dagger-like beaks. They also wade through shallow water searching for small fish and amphibians. Herons fly with their head drawn back and feet trailing behind. Dr. Patrick Heron was born in Dublin in 1952. When he was 24 years old, he had a "Saul on the road to Damascus" type of epiphany while reading the Bible. Thus began his Christian walk.
