Solvent Purification: Hexanes

A mixture of branched chain hexane isomers with a boiling range of 50-65C is isolated from an inexpensive electronics part cleaner. This material is an excellent solvent for extraction, recrystallization, and chromatography. Recovery is between 85 and 92%, depending on actual hexanes content (The range is determined from the MSDS). The intro music clip is from "Stealing Fat" by The Dust Brothers. I believe this falls under fair use.

Hydrogen sulfide undergoing antisolvent swing regeneration, or ASSR

In this video, Battelle scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory demonstrate hydrogen sulfide undergoing the Antisolvent Swing Regeneration, or ASSR, process. They have pretreated a sorbent containing hydrogen sulfide and added hexanes on top of it in a test tube. Once the two are mixed together with a stirstick, the hydrogen sulfide bubbles to the top and evaporates. Toward the end of the video, the solvent and hexanes return to normal. Reactivation of the sorbent is as simple as removing the hexanes, leaving a reusable liquid.

Liquid Nitrogen Stuff

Messing around with liquid nitrogen in the lab at night: Freezing a septum, sticking my hand in it, freezing and melting hexanes, tossing it on the floor! I love liquid nitrogen, it's fun stuff. Also, sorry for the loud music in the background (the band is Perfume Tree), I didn't realize it was so loud.

Production of Nylon-6,10

Production of Nylon-6,10 from a Sebacoyl Chloride/Hexane solution suspended on top of a 1,6-diaminohexane aqueous solution. At the interface of these two mixtures, a polymer (Nylon-6,10) is formed and will continually form when the interface is interrupted or removed. When all of the 1,6-diaminohexane is consumed, production of the nylon stops.

Exp 6 - Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)

This is the prelab video for CHEM 1020 Experiment 6: Thin-Layer Chromatography or TLC. TLC is a quick and easy way to analyze mixtures. Professional chemists use TLC all the time -- for instance, it's a simple way to tell whether or not a chemical reaction is complete. In this experiment, you'll be given an unknown mixture of over-the-counter drugs, and you'll use TLC to figure out how many substances are in that unknown, and you'll identify those substances by comparing them with known samples.

Lead Sulfide Quantum Dots Synthesis

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals on the scale of a few nanometers, or several hundred atoms. At this size quantum effects dominate and the electrons are quantum confined to narrow energy levels determined by the size of the particle. This means that the absorption wavelength the light can be fine-tuned and that quantum dots can be used to adjust the bandgap of the materials they are associated with. Quantum dots being explored for use in photovoltaics and in signal processing. This shows professional laboratory procedures for synthesizing quantum dots.
