This program was recorded and broadcast live on the internet on Monday, January 30, 2012 from Rolling Thunder Studios in Traverse City, MI. Bruce on accordion, and myself on the fiddle play a few gospel tunes, accompanied on conga drums by McKinley Brown. McKinley is an accomplished 7-year old drummer who usually plays a full kit! It was great fun, and I hope you enjoy this video as much as we did performing. Thanks for watching, and please leave a comment. God bless you!

Matt Smith & Hillar Bergman / Live Performance @ Kilkenny's, Traverse City MI

I recorded our performance at Kilkenny's in Traverse City, MI using a Flip HD camera mounted at a fixed location. Since I was fiddling, I just had to "set it and forget it" and hope for some good results. The camera's built-in audio doesn't really do justice to the sound system we we were using. I was playing my electric violin. I usually play acoustic violin into a microphone, so it took me a little while at the very beginning to get used to the difference in sound and responsiveness. Even so, I like this video and I hope you do too :-) Thanks for watching!

Home With The Girls In The Morning ~ Hillar Bergman ~ at the Hayloft

Home With The Girls In The Morning recorded at the Hayloft on M-72 in Traverse City MI on Oct. 20, 2011. Every Thursday evening there is an open mic session at the Hayloft. All sessions are recorded in their entirety, and then highlights are broadcast on 90.7 WNMC FM Traverse City MI on Sunday afternoons at 5PM. The program title is "The Roundup".which is also available on the internet at: www.roundupontheradio.com . You'll be able to hear "The Roundup" in good quality audio, far superior to what I have here. Anyway, here's what I was able to record with my Kodak Zi6 video camera. Since I was fiddling, I had the camera mounted on a stand and just let it run on it's own, hoping for the best. Midway in the tune, I took a chance and tried to add something new. It didn't work out and I lost my place for a few seconds, but was able to get back into the groove. The spontaneous clapping that started and then continued for the duration of the tune added a lot of energy and I pulled it off ok. Lots of fun!

Brendan Keenan/bodhran & Hillar Bergman/miniature 8th size fiddle

Brendan Keenan plays the bodhran as Hillar Bergman plays "The Girl I Left Behind Me" on an 1/8 size Suzuki violin. This size instrument is typically used by very young children when first beginning on the violin. The 1/8 Suzuki is amplified using a "Pignose" portable amplifier. The Pignose is the small brown box on the floor of the deck (just to the right of my feet). The video is only 42 seconds in length. The size of the violin (aka fiddle) can be seen at the very end of the tune when I turn it away from beneath my chin. The bow is very short and proportional to the size of the fiddle. This is by no means a toy instrument! Sure is a lot of fun to play. Thanks for watching and please leave a comment. If you like fiddle music, please search for "Traverse City Fiddler" in either a YouTube or Google video search. I have dozens of fiddle videos there for you, including a few others which show me playing various fiddle tunes on my 1/8 size Suzuki violin. Lorena (a Civil War tune) instrumental fiddle~ Hillar Bergman May 21 2011

Here's a popular Civil War-era tune, Lorena Video issues: I uploaded this yesterday along with several other videos using Quicktime X. Playing the clips on YouTube, I noticed that the audio was slightly out of sync with the video. It's really noticeable if you are trying to follow fingering patterns along to the music. Stuff like that really bugs me. I deleted this clip, and then re-uploaded it using Quicktime 7 Pro, using the advanced settings options that are not available in Quicktime X, to optimize the video for YouTube. I think that fixed the problem. For a while I was real happy to be able to upload directly and fast from my video camera, but it seems I have to reprocess each individual video clip with the optimum settings or they are out of sync. Maybe there's a faster work-around, but I haven't found it yet. Sorry I lost a few video comments when I re-uploaded this. *Note: I fixed all the videos i uploaded on Saturday. Took me all Sunday afternoon to do it. I lost the HD along the way, but am glad they are all in synch now. Interestingly, they are now in something called HTML5. There is an option to play the video faster or slower if you have HTML5 capability in the browser you are using. If you see a button just below the video that says "Normal", click on that and you will have several speed options. Great tool for slowing tunes down to learn them!

Bonaparte's Retreat aka Groom's Tune~Hillar Bergman, fiddler

Here's my version of Bonaparte's Retreat, also known as Groom's Tune in some parts of North Carolina. "Google" Groom's Tune to learn of it's interesting Civil War history. If you read the history of Groom's Tune, you'll understand why I played this version slow as a lament. The static or hissing noise is actually from intermittent traffic on wet pavement above the tunnel. I was playing very near one of the overhead light fixtures in the tunnel. Used a Kodak Zi6 with it's built-in microphone to record this. The green tint is just how things turned out due to the type of light bulb in the fixture. Some wierd sort of tunnel light that stays on 24/7. I think the green tinge is interesting. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did recording it. Thanks for your comments and ratings, and thanks for watching!

Nonesuch ~ Hillar Bergman...fiddler

An old English folk dance tune, "Nonesuch", which I recorded in a pedestrian tunnel. If you are familiar with Traverse City, MI, it's the tunnel that connects downtown with Clinch Park. This tunnel has very nice acoustics, though I wish I could completely eliminate traffic and wind noise. Hope you enjoy this. By the way, I found lyrics to this melody in an internet search: And she shall bring the birds in spring And dance among the flowers. In summer's heat her kisses sweet They fall from leafy bowers. She cuts the grain and harvests corn. The kiss of fall surrounds her. The days grow old and winter cold. She draws her cloak around her.

Tam Lin (aka Glasgow Reel) instrumental fiddle~Hillar Bergman May 21 2011

A couple of weeks ago I uploaded a practice session video as I was just starting to learn this tune. Here's the same tune today( 2 weeks later). It was a nice day here so I did some fiddling downtown at my favorite spot next to Kilwin's Ice Cream shop. I'm still playing the simple (single note?) version of this tune. There are ways to play it with more embellishments, but I'm not there yet. I really like this melody. Video issues: I uploaded this yesterday along with several other videos using Quicktime X. Playing the clips on YouTube, I noticed that the audio was slightly out of sync with the video. Stuff like that really bugs me. learn to play the rhythm bones...Hillar Bergman

A demonstration of the basics of how to play the rhythm bones, with examples of various materials and their different sounds. I did this video without any sort of advance preparation, outline or notes. In hindsight, there are a few things I wish I would have added. The palmetto frond I used for the palmetto bones was an extra-wide frond of a palm variety that I have only seen in St. Petersburg Fl. Most of the usual Florida palm fronds that litter the ground after a wind storm are much too narrow to my liking, though the end that grows nearest the tree is the widest. Perhaps those would work as well. Palmetto fronds are easy to whittle. I also made several pairs of bones from various pieces of heartwood from well-seasoned split firewood. I never spent too much time on a refined appearance, just a few thin splits with an axe, and you have a working set. All materials have their own unique sound and responsiveness. There are several other bones video clips on YouTube as well. Search user "gregoryburrows" for some good examples. Also, be sure to visit www.rhythmbones.com for a wealth of information about the bones!

car tire potter's wheel trailer hitch mount~Hillar Bergman

Here's the car tire potter's wheel mounted on a Reese hitch extension. I bolted the bottom 2" cast iron flange to the hitch extension with 4 bolts and a couple of large u-bolt brackets. Please see my other car tire potter's wheel videos for details. Easy to assemble/disassemble. Since it's not in the way I can actually drive down the road without removing the wheel. It is often said around here that "The view of the bay is half your pay". If the weather is nice, I'll collect on that by throwing a few pots at the beach. It doesn't take long on a sunny afternoon for the greenware to become firm enough to transport. I just hope I don't have to hit the brakes on the way home! I use real sturdy 3/4" plywood bats and run a cutoff wire under each pot. The pots will still adhere to the bats until they get beyond leather hard but not yet bone dry. At that point (usually several hours here in Michigan) they will "let go", leaving a nice clean surface on the bottom with an interesting pattern from the wire. They don't need triming. . While they are stuck on the bats, they are easy to handle and transport on the floor of the van. I don't have to touch the pots and the edges of the bats keep them apart. I may just throw a dozen or so pots so it's not like I drive away with a whole van load stacked with greenware. I can spend much more time on post-throwing ornamentation (fluting, banding with slip / sgraffito, etc.). Working outdoors you really have to be in tune with the weather <b>...</b>

Road to Boston fiddle tune. I have also heard this tune played on the fife at Revolutionary War re-enactments. It was used as a march in the colonial days. A catchy tune, it has been adopted in countries around the world where it appears in different versions. Here it is on the fiddle, with a guitar accompaniment.

Irish Washerwoman fiddle tune that I recorded in my "winter retreat" which is a 12' vintage travel trailer. I put a small wood stove in the area where a dinner table used to be, and there are 2 benches on either side of the stove. The camera was on a tripod on the bed at the other end. It's really a cramped location to film in, but it's very quiet except for the occasional bird outside. The stove runs great with a minimal amount of wood.

30 years of fiddling~Hillar Bergman...fiddler

"30 years of fiddling~Hillar Bergman...fiddler" is a short biographical slideshow. Included are some of the instruments and odd vehicles (even a Honda trail 90 motorbike) that I have used going to various festivals, historical re-enactments, and the like. You will see some unusual things, such as an elephant standing up next to my school bus motorhome, a world-famous acrobat balancing my fiddle upon his nose, a miniature fiddle being played in a hookah bar in Montreal, a small motorhome shaped like a loaf of bread, fiddling at a wedding performed at a Civil War re-enactment, fiddling in a farmhouse in Estonia with two accordion players and much more. The wooden ship is the Nina, a hand-built replica of Columbus' ship, which was used in the movie "1492". I played the fiddle on board when she was visiting Traverse City on her way to Brazil. The accompanying audio is "Allons a Lafayette", a cajun tune which I recorded and also added guitar to. Hope you enjoy this.
