www.hitfix.com 'The Eagle,' starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell, is based on a 1954 novel by Rosemary Sutcliffe called "The Eagle of the Ninth." The story centers around a young Roman Centurion, Marcus Aquila, (Tatum) whose father and his entire battalion disappeared 20 years before in the northern region or Roman ruled Britain that we now know as Northern England and Scotland, supposedly slaughtered by the native peoples of that region. (See last years "Centurion," directed by Neil Marshall, to see an excellent telling of that story.) Marcus decides to venture north to try and find out what happened to his father, as well as retrieve the golden eagle standard (a bronze statue of an eagle representing Rome) and restore honor to his family's name. Accompanying him is his slave Esca (Bell) who just happens to be from this northern area, and whose family was slaughtered by the Romans. His role is broadcast journalist from a hard news background who is jolted from retirement to join a morning show out of contractual duty. "He's a very smug self-satisfied opinionated ass. And it was a real pleasure to play it, a real thrill to be able to play this character." Does Ford find any similarities between himself and said ass? "It's a stretch. I had to dig real deep to get to this guy." Pomeroy maintains a love-hate (mostly hate) working relationship with the shows newly crowned producer, the high-energy go-getter Becky (Rachel McAdams). Off-screen, the two got along just fine. "I think that [Rachel's] a real professional, she's a pleasue to spend time with." Ford also used the word "pleasure" to describe his visit to Comic-Con in San Diego this year, his first time visiting the convention despite his iconic status as Han Solo, Indiana Jones and other fan favorites. A few hours later, I sat next to a casting director who was scouting talent at the fest at another movie's premiere and she brought up how much she loved "Crazy." Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane are the two new main players onscreen, and I'm pretty much on the record in my shameless worship of Cruz. Her making two hours of thinly veiled boner jokes with Depp while she wears various cleavage-emphasizing pirate outfits sounds like $15 worth of entertainment to me, and the fact that she's actually a pretty canny comic actress in addition to being spectacularly plush is promising. Ian McShane seems like a lovely complement to Geoffrey Rush, returning as Barbossa, and Blackbeard seems like a natural fit to what they've already done in the series. It's more interesting to me to see how they're expanding on the idea of the supernatural in the world of these movies. The original trilogy dealt with a very specific set of creatures and rules, ghosts and curses and Davy Jones, all of it tied together. Now it looks like we're moving on to mermaids and zombies and the Fountain of Youth, meaning there are some different opportunities this time, and also indicating that pretty much anything goes with these movies.
