This is my very first instructional video on building my model train layout. I know it is not perfect, I have things running out of the shot, and some other issues, but this was done with a Canon Digital still cam that takes videos. If I get a good response, I am going to do more details on how I build my layout. I learned a lot in this first video, and how to make the rest much better, plus I am shopping for a good digital camera to make them oh so sweet! This video is about how to prepare and wire your model train layout above the main board. A lot of people wire their layout below the main board, and they crawl under it, but I cannot since I am in a wheelchair. So I have wired this on the table, but it will be all below the landscape. All of the wires will feed back to a main panel, so I can make changes or additions on the fly, from a simple panel. I will be putting wires all throughout the layout, for stuff I have, and for future use, that way, I can pull out wires when I need them for new cool stuff. This layout is going to have automated crossing gates, a wig wag signal, and oh, so much more. Follow me in my journey while I build this cool layout with lots of bells and whistles, literally!!

Its chief purpose is to carry the trains of its owners, Southern RR and the Clinchfield RR across the Blue Ridge Mountains. Since it is the only Carolina's mainline that crosses the Blue Ridge, traffic is heavy. Modern operations with diesel locomotives are emphasize." - P&W Website The HO Scale Club was formed in July 1988 in the city of Valdese, North Carolina. The club was Incorporated in November of that year and commenced construction of the layout in January of 1989. The layout is almost 1400 square feet (130 sq. meters) in area, with workshop, storage and railroad museum in adjacent rooms. The mainline is mostly single track to increase operating interest, and is approximately 250 feet (76 meters) long with total trackage well over 1000 feet (305 meters). The Digitrax Super Chief ® control system is used. Currently 16-20 locomotives and almost 200 freight and passenger cars are in use. During 2004, construction began on the "Murphy Branch" extension which is in the adjacent room of 600+ sq. ft. The "Murphy Branch" will include the Graham County Rwy. This is my 10' x 13' HO railroad. I started it a long time ago, several addresses ago. It's grown a lot since then but won't get much bigger than it is now. It is not real fancy. For example I use snap switches, horn hook couplers, house light switches for block power, and doorbell buttons for yard track selectors. The yard is wired up so you need only press one button to select your route down one of seven tracks. That required diodes and took a little time to figure out. Other points of interest are that the large steel mill was made of poster board, there is moving water at that factory, the turntable pit has metal walls which supply power to the track on the platform since it is turned manually by a wooden disc that sticks out the side of the table, and a few buildings were cobbled together from parts and material found in boxes and boxes of train stuff. This layout can be operated because it has 5 industries that give almost 2 hours of work! All music from www.freeplaymusic.com

A visit to Bruce Friedman's CSX HO Scale Model Railroad based on the route from Philadelphia, PA to Baltimore, MD. It's a multi-level walk around design, using DCC (Digital Command Control), the signals just as the prototype (aka the real thing) are operated via a computer program and by a dispatcher when they have an operating session, which is a simulation of prototype practices moving the trains over the road, picking up and setting out cars along the route, there are staging yards that trains are set up on to move over the railroad. The trackage is code 70 and 83, which is based on the actual weight of the rail based on how much it weighs per yard, the turnouts (which allow changing routes from one track to another) are based on #6 and #8 specifications, so that means the degree of curvature is what determines whether the turnout is #4, 5, 8, 10 or 12, they go as high as #20's and #30's for high speed operations and even greater. The layout requires 70 locomotives to operate during the ops sessions, also there are a total of 700 cars to fulfill the operations. The layout is based on current operations, folks from all walks of life are into the hobby and t attend Bruce's sessions to operate the layout, railroaders who really run trains either as conductors or engineers, and a great deal of military folks who are stationed in the area or visit the area, and some law enforcement as well. In this video, we board a Pennsy passenger train to take a journey on the mainline over the entire layout. There was a 1-minute gap in the train audio between Hinkly and Columbia, so I dubbed in a short music clip. The train audio picks up again (in sync with the video) as the train enters Columbia. Unfortunately, sound goes out of sync from video as train pulls into the station. Not sure why.

This is a 1930's style model railroad called Douglassville Locomotive Works (DLW for short). This layout is located in Douglassville, PA. It took the owner, Jay Matz (and friends), 20 years to build this large layout, and it is still expanding! The rail line that runs two Shays and one Climax is "Pine Ridge Lumber" and the two main lines are "Berkshire and Allegheny" and "Neversink Railroad". Norman Stenzel's HO layout is located in Atlanta GA. The layout fills a 2000 square foot basement and is based on a fictional railroad, the Brandywine & Benedictine. More info on layout can be found here: www.piedmont-div.org Brief Overview: The Brandywine & Benedictine Railroad is a Class 1 Appalachian coal hauler modeled in 1953. It runs north and south from Winston Salem, NC to Pittsburgh, PA. Motive power is a 50/50 mix of steam and first generation diesel power. The railroad is designed with prototype operations in mind with jobs to keep 12 to 16 people busy. The B&B is controlled using Digitrax DCC and a computer running RR&CO software. Layout owner is Norman Stenzel. This layout is located in Atlanta GA. My visit: I and 5 members of the Orlando N-trak club (from Orlando FL) were invited to run on this layout during the Dixie Rail 2010 ops session held October 1 - 3. We visited this layout on Saturday Oct 2nd. Extra Note: At 03:13 The crossing gates sounds are actually coming from the model. The passing train steam audio and freight car audio was dubbed from recordings I made at Cass WV and from a NS freight in Atlanta GA. Extra Note 2: The crossing gates on the layout can be activiated or deactivated by the push button or by sensing the approaching train. This is my Thomas and Friends Layout. Kato Unitrack with Electric points operated by NCE DCC decoders.. All locomotives are Bachmann except Duck and Edward which are Hornby. All locomotives have been converted to DCC with TCS decoders with BEMF which has improved the running performance significantly.
