Hohokam Petroglyphs. South Mountain Park , Phoenix , Arizona part 2 of 5

www.pueblogrande.org The Hohokam . Between 10000 and 25000 years ago the first people arrived in Arizona . About 2000 years ago , the Hohokam began an irrigation and agricultural economy along the banks of Tonto Creek , the Salt , Gila ,San Perdo , Agua Fria , Verde , and Santa Cruz River . Maize (corn) , beans , squash , and cotton were cultivated . They gathered mesquite beans and roasted agave . Deer , javelina , rabbits , bighorn sheep , rodents , repetiles , fish , and birds were also eaten .The Hohokam produced elaborate craftwork , developed far-reaching trade contacts , and built ballcourts . They pecked petroglyphs into the rocks . Sometime in the 1400's the Hohokam "vanished" . Urban development , agricultural leveling , and people have destroyed much of what Hohokam left .Important information can still be gained from the remaining material culture and petroglyphs .Please leave it as you find it .

Hohokam - 'Skywatchers of the Sonoran Desert', Wild Visions

From 0 AD to 1400 AD, the Hohokam Indians of the Salt River Valley, in what is now Phoenix, Arizona, had a thriving culture that could have topped 40000 individuals. This was an impressive number of people living in what some consider to be such a hostile desert environment, however, live and thrive they did for almost 14 centuries. This sample documentary was produced by Wild Visions, Inc to show the world their extraordinary culture, successful lifestyle, and amazing engineering feats such as the building of over 1000 miles of irrigation canals. Join us as we visit the Hohokam and learn just how they managed a culture of this size and what the sun told them about the seasons of the year.
