Practicing with my new Hokema Kalimba (Mbira)

I am new to the world of Kalimba (aka Mbira) and just started playing it after my wife ordered it and got it shipped here. Hopefully, I will introduce some new music once I learn more. Enjoy and your constructive comments and ratings are appreciated. If you have any ideas on how I can improve or learn any new songs, leave them in your comments. Thanks!

Late night Sansula improvisation

Having trouble sleeping, I play around with a Sansula instead. It is a little bit sloppy playing, but demonstrates some of the capabilities of this extraordinary instrument. (However the rich sound is not at all captured in this recording) Too slow and sleepy? Halway through, there is some rather funny quick sansula-waltz for you... Sansulas are well crafted kalimba-style instruments mounted on a frame drum, a creation by Peter Hokema. If you are interested in having one of your own, simply do a web search, or contact me directly if you are in Scandinavia/northern Europe.

Miss Nina the CH 7 Angle Helicopter

An old army buddy Peter Hokema from MI visited me a few years back so naturally I was happy to give him a dusk demo flight in Miss Nina my CH 7 Angle helicopter one lovely summer evening in the late 1990s. Just recently Pete surprised me and sent me a copy of his video footage from that day on a DVD in the mail just recently. So, wanting to pass on the his good deed, I crunched out his old vid on HandBrake n uTubed it just for your enjoyment.........

5-Note Chordal Kalimba Choirs

The 5-Note Kalimbas can be tuned to any chord, and when played in turn, a group of children can improvise melodies around an arpeggiated chord progression. They are also great fun for adults, and a great way to learn about chords and chord progressions. Brought to you by Hokema, the same people who make the Sansula. Available at www.kalimbamagic.com

Panther Furwash Sansula Popping Part 1

I slowly play the sansula with my black panther as the sleepy furwashing audience. By using your index fingers, you can mute the tines to make a popping sound. A very useful technique to add some variation or to prevent the tines from ringing all at once when you play quickly! If you are stuck in playing sad lullabies and want something more catchy, you should definitely try it out... This is played with a song i composed playing in my headphones, trying out if i can find something fitting on the sansula, which felt quite limiting at the time. Sansulas are well crafted kalimba-style instruments mounted on a frame drum, a creation by Peter Hokema. First Sansula and Guitar Improvisation Part 1

Staffan Palm got a visit from John Byron Shank, US. As John tends to bring his travel guitar and Staffan often has a sansula or two, a improvised jam session was more or less inevitable. It was a very nice session, the first time we do anything like this. Unfortunately the best moments tends to be created when not recording. The Sansula is played with on top of a second Sansula turned upside down, resulting in a strong WahWah-effect for the lower notes, as well as a very deep but rather unclear sound, as the tines on both sides are ringing. The Space Guitar Thingie is played from the headphone jack into a regular home stereo, no effects enabled. Lacking our proper equipment, this was recorded using a small regular compact camera. Sansulas are well crafted kalimba-style instruments mounted on a frame drum, a creation by Peter Hokema. custom-made Sansula

- Vorsicht : Suchtgefahr

Axel Lecourt & Nadishana - Water Mbira \ Spacedrum jam

nadishana.com Some days ago i visited my friend Axel, who lives in Paris. This guy does great work and have amazing creative ideas. His house loaded with weird instruments from all over the world, check his site: www.triomad.com On this video you can see the spontaneous improvisation on spacedrum & water mbira (which Axel made himself)

Sansula, one-hand technique demonstration (Nadishana)

You can buy this instrument here: shop.nadishana.com Sansula is modern development of the African kalimba (likembe, mbira). If you mount a strap to put sansula on your belly, it can be modulated like berimbau using your belly (see demo video)! Smart positioning of the keys let you play sansula with just one hand if you want! So you can use other hand to play one more instrument same time for instance.

Thomas Bothe's Kalimba

shop.kalimbamagic.com Thomas Bothe sent me this delightful kalimba. (I should note that I got the Bothe Brothers, Thomas and Wolfgang, confused - I will have to go back and REDO this video crediting Thomas with the kalimba.) Thomas' kalimba borrows some ideas from the Hokema Sansula, but it has its own set of tricks, making this a nice innovation in the ever-expanding kalimba universe.
Chordal Kalimba Choir

Peter Hokema's new instrument made up of five 5-Note Chordal Kalimbas. I call it the Chordal Kalimba Choir - like a bell choir. Peter calls it the Papson Piano - Pap for papier (cardboard - the resonator) + Son for sound. This is the song that came out of this instrument in the hours after I set it up. I ended up making a few retunings from what Peter sent it as (the Stairway to Heaven chord set). Get yours at Kalimba Magic: www.shop.kalimbamagic.com
