My neighbor built this little engine in the machine shop in his garage. He built everything except the cylinders, which are some old Briggs cylinders if I remember right. He built everything including the transmission. Notice the little drip oiling system mounted back by the rear cylinder that feeds through the copper lines. Also the U-shaped intake manifold that feeds from the carb on the other side. You gotta hand it to this guy, he is one hell of a machinist and fabricator.

Built in a shed, it fired up first go. I was hoping it would sound real lumpy like a drag engine, but it runs too smooth, and it's too quiet even with unsilenced 9" pipes! The timing was a pain to sort out the Rover distributor runs backwards, I had to take the heads off to work out the firing order!!! See the shed it was built in on Vid 1. Added May 2012: OK, my nails are dirty, maybe because I'm an engineer & build stuff? Maybe your nails are clean because you can't build eff-all & just sit behind your computer? Home built four stroke engine. Built using drawings from 1936 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine. Wood patterns were made, then used to make sand molds. Old car pistons and transmission cases were broken up and melted in a small propane furnace. The molten aluminum was poured into the sand molds. Next each part was machined on a 1941 South Bend lathe. Using an old model airplane engine spark plug and coil, two D batteries were hooked up to create 3 volts for ignition. Contact points are from a 1977 GM V-8 engine. The fuel tank is an old glue can.

Made from scratch from an original design, the Homebrew Hvid is based on a circa 1900 engine design by a Dutchman named Jan Brons. Brons designed the engine to get around the patents of Rudolph Diesel. Brons sold US patent rights to his engine to a man named Hvid who made some changes in the design then licensed companies like Sears-Roebuck (Thermoil brand engines) to make the one-cylinder compression ignition flywheel engines. Heres my Cummins ST50 based gas turbine. I built this after building a couple of "traditional" turbocharger based jets. I removed the cast iron scroll and fabricated the turbine shroud, nozzle guide vanes and all the other combustor components from 321 and 304 stainless. Sorry guys, I dont have plans drawn up for it. I did one pull test with it using a furniture dolly and fish scale.. probably not the most accurate method but still managed about 60lbs. It currently runs on propane. Next on the list of things to do is to install the oil cooler and fan kit, and finish the swap to kerosene. Pics of the build here- photobucket.com . . .

The combustion chamber is a hardware funnel and a family size tuna fish can and asbestos tape. The bearings are copper alloy plumbing fittings. The shaft is shaft quality steel rod. The exhaust nozzle is a plated steel flour sifter and the exhaust cone inside is a flat head V-8 chrome oil cap Prototype named "The Rebel" after NSU athletic mascot, Chovanak was on the University track team '65-'66. No CNC's, here! Hand built father/son project. This one is a tricky one, so it's not a good first or second build IMO. We recommend phosphor bronze for the piston, and SS seems to be great for the valve. There are simpler ones that don't have the 20 degree angle on the body, and don't have the one piece crank/cam with a 43 degree offset on them. But, we can both be proud of this one. It runs at about 2600 RPM's. It is somewhat fussy, and needs a little lovin' between runs. Things can come loose, careful lube, etc. Fun build though!

I have been very pleased with my DAYMAK AUSTIN electric motor bike. This is the fourth season of riding around the city streets and local highways. I have had a few electrical/electronic issues which I repaired quickly. However as with all new things there is room for improvement. Wouldn't low speed reverse be nice for backing your bike into the shed or garage. How about going FASTER with MORE torque. After all that then there is the sealed lead acid battery pack. Control of the low battery cut off voltage without starting a fire. Maybe regenerative braking to extend battery capacity. A faster, quicker charger would be nice. How about a solar charger. You'll want to checkout my 12V to 48V DC-DC inverter charging circuit that uses solar energy stored in a 12V battery and charges my 48V battery pack for free at the end of this video. I have made a few of these as well as a RV charger that charges the ebike's 48V to 72V battery while the RV is being driven from town to town. I'm not the only crazy eletronics guy who thinks that these new electric vehicles are the way to go. Well I set out to make my own controller with a few improvements. I started by making my own 3-phase brushless DC hub motor controller circuit and board PC board layout. Exposed, developed, etched the PC board from scratch. Drilled out all the holes and assembled the parts into the controller board. Using my in-circuit programmer debugger I wrote up the machine language program and downloaded it. Bingo a <b>...</b>

Its a down scaled copy or imitation if you like, of the inherent Bell 47. You can build this helicopter your self under a watching eye of your countries EAA organisation( experimental aircraft association) Safari helicopter have a ordinary Lycoming 4 cylinder piston engine that powers most general aviation aircraft and helicopters for 50+ years. Its very reliable. The drive train is direct whit a centrifugal clutch for engaging rotors turning, no belts whit other words. This is Scott Ehni's custom Zenith CH701 airplane (that he scratch-built from plans) powered by the lightweight Garrett JFS 100-13A Turboshaft engine, putting out at least 90 BHP at a prop speed of 3100 rpm, burning about 12 gph. The small APU will work on almost any liquid that will burn. The best off-airport fuel choice is a mix of diesel and unleaded regular gas as it burns a bit cleaner. I've actually had this up to 810 rpm on propane but it does very well on alcohol or even candle power as shown in this video. The breeze can easily be felt 20 feet away even with the candles driving it. Still needs refining but lots of potential applications for this engine.

I've been working to raise the speed of this little engine and checking that it will cope with the increased stresses. This video shows that it can take it. I'm running it on a Bunsen burner hooked to a propane bottle to be able to run the heater head red hot. Water is circulating through the cooling jacket from a tiny pump. I had cut the base off so placed steel wool pads under the legs to absorb any vibrations. I'm pretty pleased with how this engine is doing and I'm thinking it's about maxed out. Next step - to measure the power output. [Update: max power = 10.4 watts @ 1000 rpm, measured on the shaft; Max torque = 1.06 lb-in. @ 540 rpm]

I've upgraded my little testbed Stirling engine with ball bearings on the crank, stainless steel wool displacer/regenerator firmly fastened in place, a safer alcohol burner, and external water cooling from a tiny submersible pump. The result is a fast little engine with a good bit of power and torque (as yet unmeasured). This engine has been used a lot and is getting to the end of it's useful life, but the next gen engine is in the works. Check out my other video and see how I adapted this one to run on solar energy by inverting it - 1000+rpm in October sun!
