Motorcycle Repair: How to adjust the Valves or Valve Lash on a 1985 Honda XR600
**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** In this video I show how to adjust the valves on a 1985 Honda XR600. Each valve and rocker arm is covered by a screw on cap called a valve adjustment cap. The caps should be removed to adjust the valves.The valves should be adjusted with the bike cold and the piston at TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke. There are two small threaded covers on the left side of the crankcase. Behind the larger cover is a bolt attached to the crankshaft that can be used to rotate the crankshaft using a ratchet and socket. Behind the smaller cover you can see the outer edge of the rotor/flywheel. On the outer edge of the rotor is etched a line next to the letter 'T'. When the line is exactly in the center of the smaller cover hole, the piston is at top dead center. Use a ratchet and socket to rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise until the line next to the letter T is centered in the smaller cover hole. If the piston is at TDC, the rocker arms should be loose and you should be able to wiggle the rocker arms with your fingers. If you can't, than the piston is not at TDC on the compression stroke and the crankshaft should be rotated another 360 degrees counter clockwise. Once the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke the valves can be adjusted. On each rocker arm is a adjustment screw and a lock nut. After the lock nut <b>...</b>

A brief overview on how to perform a valve lash adjustment on any non vtec motor. I already adjusted 14 of the valves (4 per cylinder) and wanted to record the process on the remaining 2 exhaust valves for cylinder 3. FYI: 9:00 cam gear position is only for CYLINDER 3. For cylinder #1 cam gear arrows line up at 12:00, cylinder #2 at 3:00, cylinder #3 at 9:00, cylinder #4 at 6:00. Remember Cylinder #1 is closest to the cam gears. Where do I stick the feeler gauge? So I got the answer from the honda cub group on Yahoo. Turns out the gauge fits under the rocker arm, between the adjusting screw and the top of the valve. I made sure to adjust it so the feeler gauge would fit, but still have some drag. I had to bend it quite a bit to get it in there, but all worked out okay.

Valve lash adjustment on a 5.0L with pedestal rockers
I have now finished two volumes on "Swapping a 5.0L engine into a Fox body Ford". This is a short clip from the valve lash adjustment chapter in volume one. Understand, this video clip is for setting non-adjustable pedestal rocker arm. When I torque the rocker bolts down, they are fully tightened to the head. All checks for pushrod length and rocker tip contact were checked earlier in the DVD. The finished video series shows what is needed when installing a V8 into a Fox platform that may have had a 4 or 6 cylinder engine originally. The Fox that I'm using in this production is an 88 Turbo Coupe TBird and the engine is from a 99 Explorer. This video can be used when swapping a 5.0L into any Fox platform. In the first volume, I pull the 4 cyl. and A4LD trans. from car, make changes to the engine so it can fit in a Fox frame as well as do a partial tear down of the engine. The AOD tranny is installed in volume 2 which is the same one that I overhauled in my "How To Overhaul the Ford AOD" repair video. The engine is pretty much stock in vol. 1, however I show how to install a high lift cam, degree it in, check piston to valve clearance, talk about valve train geometry and how to set valve lash. I also do simple bearing and cylinder wall wear measurements. Volume 2 has chapters on putting the drivetrain together, wiring/plumbing engine for EEC IV EFI, and how to troubleshoot electronic fuel injection. Update!!!! 77600 miles and counting. I heard a rattle in the engine and thought the worst. I decided that I should adjust the valves. I only took the rear valve cover off cause it was easy to get to. The cams show a little bit of wear but none of them looked bad enough to really cause any operational problems. I'm not sure what the clearance specifictions are, but I have the book. It said it was in a table somewhere. I really didn't have much time to fool with it so I just took a look around to see what was to be seen. I couldn't find my feeler gauges as the garage needs a major cleaning. I know at this point you are thinking I am terribly disorganized, and you are probably right! "Just by feel" I think the rocker arms have .015 to .025 inches of lash in them at room temperature. That amount is probably too much, but with the lack of time, not looking up the specs, and the lack of finding the proper tools, I threw it all back together just in time to ride the bike to work that day. I guess if the engine has made it this far, there's no sense in changing the valve lash now, despite the slight rattling sound as heard in the previous video I posted some while ago. Hopefully it will keep running just the way the used motorcycle dealer set the valve lash 17 years ago when my dad bought the bike with 50000 miles on it in 1992.

91 honda prelude 2.0si turbo walkaround
This is just a brief walkaround of my car. It's a custom turbo setup, some supporting modifications, and some extra mods, all of which I have done myself. Nothing too outrageous, but not very stock. And yes, I have to adjust my valve lash. Again. =P Sorry it's fast and shaky. I took HotRox and I was a little twitchy.
