Honey Bees - Life Cycle

DVD: hilaroad.com The life cycle of a honey bee is presented as an example of complete metamorphosis, the development of an insect from egg to larva, then pupa, then adult. Moths, butterflies and wasps also develop with complete metamorphosis. Some aspects of beekeeping are also discussed. A resource for teaching the life cycle of insects. Honey Bee Blues

Honeybee Blues tells the story of the worlds disappearing honeybees and the efforts of Australian scientist Dr Denis Anderson to save them from annihilation. From the native bush and orchards of Australia to the industrial farmlands of the United States and the highlands of Papua New Guinea, Honeybee Blues is a scientific detective story that tells a 21st century cautionary tale. The European honeybee, or Apis mellifera, is used for commercial honey production and by a global pollination industry worth up to $100 billion. Without it we would lose a third of the worlds food supply. But honeybees are under threat from all directions. Industrial agriculture and habitat destruction have taken a toll but the biggest threat is a deadly parasitic mite which Anderson discovered and called Varroa destructor. It has decimated bee populations everywhere except Australia which is now the only country that still has European honeybees living in the wild. While in Papua New Guinea, Anderson discovers another lethal mite, Varroa jacobsoni, that adds to the threat to the worlds honeybees. Denis Anderson believes the solution to eradicating the Varroa mite lies in the genes of the honeybee. He is trying to switch off the honeybee gene that tells the Varroa mite to reproduce. If he succeeds, he could save the last of the worlds wild European honeybees from extinction. The film features observational sequences and interviews with biosecurity officers, bee exporters, pollinators and honey ...

Hornet Raid on Honey Bee Hive

This video demonstrates aggressive robbing behavior against an established Honey Bee Colony. During periods of stress, some colonies may be weakened and be subject to robbing by other honey bees as well as attacks by hornets. Having a wide entrance to the hive in mid summer does aid in the rapid introduction of honey and pollen stores, however it also makes the hive more difficult to defend by the resident honey bees. When I witnessed the struggle against robbing bees and hornets, I installed a smaller entrance reducer and the honey bees were then able to fend off the intruders successfully. I hope you enjoy this video and recognize signs of problems in your own hives and act before it is too late to salvage the established honey bees.

#40 Feeding Honey Bees & Observing Varroa Mites

I show you a bee with DWV Deformed Wing Virus that has been kicked out of the hive, how to inspect a frame, how to smoke the hive, how to place a internal bucket feeder in a hive, what brood looks like, the different brood types, a live female varroa mite looking for her next victim, a bee with a mite attached, and an 'age gradient' in brood, hive tool explanations! The noise is a bit loud, we were on the roof and the ventilation system was loud! I use my new camera, complete with a tripod! A lot in this video!

Do the Honey Bee!

It is a fact of nature: Honey bees perform a series of moves known as the waggle dance to let their hive mates know the distance, quality and quantity of a newly found food supply. Honey bees are mysteriously disappearing - a crisis known as Colony Collapse disorder and researchers are working to determine the cause. Its alarming considering honey bees are responsible for pollinating one out of every three bites an American eats. Music Video Directed by Max Lanman Music Video Produced by Connor Lanman Original Song Produced by James Lanman Lyrics for Do The Honey Bee Co-written by Max Lanman, James Lanman, and Connor Lanman [verse 1] What up everybody? What up? Whats good? The honey bees are here— straight from the hood, We only roll in two colors: yellow and black, We be getting no respect, and its getting kind of whack. [verse 2] Do you know what would happen if we just up and went, Youd be floored by the facts if you knew just what it meant, yo, No more sweets, ice cream and no more honey, No more veggies and fruit naw--- that just aint funny. [CHORUS] Lets get the word up and walk it out, These moves right here are what its all about, Shake your stingers and bend your knees, Get down real low and DO THE HONEY BEE Do the Honey Bee, Do the Honey Bee, Do the Honey Bee, Do the Honey Bee, Do the Honey Bee, Do the Honey Bee, Do the Honey Bee, Do the Honey Bee, Shake your stingers and Do the Honey Bee, (the honey bee) Shake your stingers and Do the Honey Bee, Get down real ...

The Waggle Dance of the Honeybee

How can honeybees communicate the locations of new food sources? Austrian biologist, Karl Von Frisch, devised an experiment to find out! By pairing the direction of the sun with the flow of gravity, honeybees are able to explain the distant locations of food by dancing. "The Waggle Dance of the Honeybee" details the design of Von Frisch's famous experiment and explains the precise grammar of the honeybees dance language with high quality visualizations. This video is a design documentary, developed by scientists at Georgia Tech's College of Computing in order to better understand and share with others, the complex behaviors that can arise in social insects. Their goal at the Multi-Agent Robotics and Systems (MARS) Laboratory is to harness new computer vision techniques to accelerate biologists' research in animal behavior. This behavioral research is then used, in turn, to design better systems of autonomous robots. For additional detail on the MARS lab at Georgia Tech, please visit www.bio-tracking.org

Honey Bee Hives update July 2011

For some reason, this year seems to be very good for the bees. All of my hives seem to be thriving. One hive, in fact, seems to have an over-achiever for a queen. She has filled this hive with bees and then some. This video is mainly how I've been trying to deal with her prolific-ness. I have learned a lot this year, simply because I've been examining and "messing with" my hives a LOT more. I hope to take honey off this year as well. I have an antique extractor I'm itching to try out / use -- another video.

Collecting a Wild Honeybee Swarm

Visit cookingupastory.com for more videos on food and sustainable living. When the population of worker bees exceeds the resource capacity of a hive, a portion of the colony will leave to find a new home. A swarm is the natural way for a hive to divide itself (usually) in half, and transport the new colony (with the old queen) to a temporary spot (cluster) from which select bee members (scouts) search for a new home.

Burt's Bees Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), Honey Bees Dying

Why are the bees dying? Why are honey bees disappearing from across the US? Well, Burt's Bees (www.burtsbees.com is raising awareness about an environmental issue called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) to find out and help save the dying bees. Colony Collapse Disorder is the sudden dying of bees causing the whole honey bee colony to collapse leading to widespread disappearance of bees from our environment. While the exact causes for bee Colony Collapse Disorder are unknown, we do know that forces like habitat destruction, misuse of pesticides, invasive species and global warming create risks to honey bees. You can help make the planet a healthy place for bees. Sign up for a free packet of wildflower seeds to plant and give bees a healthy place to live in your neighborhood. We're also providing access to support local organic farmers who naturally create pesticide-free, bee-friendly environments while providing local communities with healthy fresh produce. By saving the dying bees, we save a lot more than the bees. Be involved. For The Greater Good. www.burtsbees.com
