How to Install Memory (RAM) into a Computer

The memory used in this video is a pair of 4GB DIMMS (totaling 8GB) of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 memory clocked at 1600MHz and the motherboard is the ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Performance motherboard. Steps: 1. Unlock the DIMM slots by pressing the retaining clips outward. 2. Line up the notch on the DIMMs with the breaks on the slots and push them in. 2a. If the retaining clips don't automatically close, close them yourself. Remember to make sure that when installing your RAM you only install it into slots of the same color so that the motherboard can activate the multi-channel memory technology. All you have to do beforehand is make sure your motherboard is compatible with your RAM. This means if your RAM is DDR, DDR2, or DDR3, your board must be compatible with that type. If it's not, you'll know because the breaks in the DIMM slots are different for each of the types of RAM. Also, it's more stable and you'll get more speed by using fewer memory modules. So rather than loading a board up with 4 or possibly even 8 DIMMs, try to keep it down to 2 or 4 in order to increase the speeds that your system will be capable of achieving. Multi-Channel Memory Technology: Multi-channel architecture is a technology that increases the transfer speed of data between the RAM and the memory controller by adding more channels of communication between them. Theoretically this multiplies the data rate by exactly the number of channels present. Dual-channel memory employs two channels which ...

What Does Memory Do?

What does memory do? Let the Memory Experts at Crucial show you. A computer is made up of three main components: • the central processing unit (CPU) • the hard drive • and the random access memory (RAM) If your system attempts to access data from RAM and does not find it, it has to rely on the hard drive (which ends up being significantly slower than using the RAM). This really slows down the performance of your system. The more data you can store in RAM the less your computer will need to access the hard drive -- resulting in big improvements for you. No matter how fast your computer's CPU can run, and no matter how much storage your hard drive boasts, the best way to improve your computer's performance and speed is to add more memory. Go to www.Crucial.com to learn more about compatible memory upgrades today! More videos! Understanding Dual Voltage Memory

Hi, I'm Alison, one of the Memory Experts at Crucial. We get a lot of question about dual-voltage RAM. It's a newer memory type that some people find confusing. Here is what you need to know... Voltage refers to the power consumed by a module. In the past, most DDR3 memory voltage ranged from 1.5 - 1.65v. More recently, Crucial.com started offering dual 1.35/1.5 voltage modules. It's important to understand that while the lower voltage memory has some advantages over high voltage (namely lower power consumption), your system must support it in order to fully take advantage of it. If your original installed memory is 1.5V and you are adding a dual-voltage 1.35V/1.5V module to an open DIMM slot, the dual-voltage module will operate at 1.5V, not 1.35V. In order to run at 1.35V, all installed memory modules must be dual-voltage 1.35V/1.5V and the system must support DDR3L (1.35V low voltage) to enable the module to run at 1.35V. So which is better? Generally, lower voltage is optimal as it consumes less power and in turn, may generate less heat. However, it is important to note that the overall system must support the lower voltage DDR3L to run at 1.35V. If the system does not support DDR3L the module will run at the higher voltage. In other words, you can purchase whichever of memory your system supports, but the dual-voltage module will run only run at 1.35V if your specific system supports that voltage. You can find and choose the best right memory upgrade options for your ...

How Much RAM Can My OS Handle?

What is the maximum amount of RAM your Mac or Windows operating system can handle? That depends on two factors: the amount of memory your computer hardware can handle, and the amount of memory your Microsoft® Windows® operating system (OS) can handle. First, your computer hardware (motherboard) is designed to hold a maximum amount of RAM. When you look up your computer in the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool or scan your system with the Crucial System Scanner, you will see the system maximum listed on the page that shows the compatible upgrades for your system. Second, the OS maximum is the maximum amount of memory that your particular version of Windows, Linux, or Mac® OS can handle. When purchasing your memory upgrade, make sure that you do not exceed the lower of the two maximums (OS and computer maximums.) Too much RAM can lower your system's performance or cause other problems. (In most cases, the system maximum is lower than the OS maximum.) More videos! ECC vs. Non-ECC Memory: What's the Difference?

When adding new memory, you should match what is already in your system. Adding non-ECC memory to an ECC system will disable the error-checking and correcting ability of your memory modules. While your system may still operate, the enhanced features of the ECC modules will no longer be active in your computer. You can determine if your system has ECC by simply counting the number of black memory chips on each module. ECC (and parity) memory modules have a chip count divisible by three or five. Using ECC decreases your computer's performance by about 2 percent. Current technology DRAM is very stable, and memory errors are rare, so unless you have a need for ECC, you are better served with non-parity (non-ECC) memory. Why Doesn't Windows Recognize All of My RAM?

The Memory Experts at Crucial answer this questions quite often: Why doesn't my Windows® PC recognize all of the memory I installed? Here's what's going on.... When you install, for instance, 4GB of memory in a 32-bit Windows system, your system reports only 3GB or 3.5GB. Don't worry - there isn't a problem with the memory. Not only is there a maximum amount of memory that your computer motherboard can accept, there is also a maximum amount of memory that your operating system can accept. Regardless of how much memory is installed. Some of it is reserved for use by the devices that you are using, such as a graphics card, a PCI card, integrated network connections, and more. That makes it unavailable for use as main memory. When you power up your computer, your system calculates the amount of memory needed for these devices--if you haven't maxxed out the memory in your system, it's invisible to you, and all your physical memory (the installed RAM) is available for use. But if you've maxxed out the DRAM in your system, this amount will be deducted from your physical memory, so the system does not recognize 100% of your DRAM. The maximum memory limitation varies by operating system, For instance, the 4GB memory limitation doesn't exist in 64-bit versions of Windows. For more information, go to www.crucial.com. More videos! Regular maintenance: www.youtube.com Why a memory upgrade makes sense: www.youtube.com What does memory do? www.youtube.com

Understanding DRAM memory speeds

At Crucial, we get a lot of questions about memory speed. Here are the main the differences between PC2100 (DDR266), PC2700 (DDR333), and PC3200 (DDR400). First and foremost, all of these memory types are double data rate -- or DDR -- memory. Those numbers represent the speed of memory your computer was designed to support. Crucial no longer carries PC2100 (DDR266) memory, but we do have PC2700 (DDR333) memory and PC3200 (DDR400). They are backward-compatible with PC2100. And what does that mean? Generally speaking, you can safely add faster memory to a computer that was designed to run slower memory. Keep in mind your system will operate at the speed of the slowest module or system component. There's another thing to consider-- memory has to be the same type to work. For example, SDRAM cannot be mixed with DDR, and DDR cannot be mixed with DDR2. We recommend that you use the Crucial Memory Advisor™ or System Scanner tools to find the right memory for your computer.

What type of RAM do I need?

DDR? DDR2? DDR3? What kind of memory does your computer take? Memory types are not interchangeable. Let Alison show you the difference between memory types, so when you're ready to upgrade your laptop or desktop computer, you'll know exactly what to look for. All computers use Random Access Memory -- otherwise known as "RAM", but it is important to know what kind of memory your system uses before you buy an upgrade. * DDR memory * DDR2 memory * DDR3 memory As with most parts of your computer, the faster that data can be transferred within the system, the quicker your computer will run. The easiest way to find the right memory for your computer is to look up your system in Crucial's Memory Advisor tool. Or, you can let the Crucial System Scanner show you which upgrade is right for you. Go to www.crucial.com for more information. More videos! Installing an SSD in your desktop

lt is easy to install an SSD into your desktop system, using the Crucial bracket adapter kit, available on Crucial.com. Your kit should include two mounting brackets and mounting screws. You'll also need your new SSD and a SATA cable. First, power up your system, so you can determine if the SSD capacity is larger than the "used" space on your hard drive. To do this, just double click on "My Computer" and single click on the C: drive. Click Properties. If the "used" space on this drive is greater than your SSD's capacity, you'll have to move some of that data on to an alternative storage device like a USB drive or external hard drive. Once you've determined that the new SSD has enough capacity for your data, turn off the computer and disconnect the power source. Remove the case cover. Depending on your system, you'll remove the side panel or the back panel of the computer. Now you have access to the inside of your system. Next, take the mounting brackets at the SSD. Attach the brackets to the SSD by aligning the holes and screwing them together. Locate an open 3 ½ -inch drive bay in the computer and install the bracket with the mounting screws. After the drive bay is back in the system locate the end of the SATA data cable Then, attach the other end of the SATA connector to the mounted SSD. That's it! Now you're ready to clone the data off your old hard drive and on to the new SSD. For details on how to do that, check out our SSD data transfer video on the Crucial, com ...
