Free Photography Lessons, Part 2: Composition

I gladly offer this basic, 5-part series of photography lessons FOR FREE! Our world has become increasingly visual in the way we communicate. We not only take more pictures, we show them, send them and display them to more eyes than ever before. Wouldn't it be nice to capture and show better pictures? In this series, I get us thinking about... 1. How to tell a story with our photographs by understanding the 4 dimensions associated with the art. 2. The basic elements of "composing" our photographic story. How do we put things in our viewfinders so people get the essence of that moment that inspired us. 3. Understanding exposure, light and color and how they combine to say what we want. 4. How lens choice and operation effects focus and how focus effects what we show in our photos 5. The people in our photographs and the people we are showing them to. Please enjoy these lessons. They're not meant to be comprehensive and their not meant to be exhaustive or advanced. That doesn't mean I don't encourage any questions you might want to post for either me to try to answer or anyone else who comes along. Please, be kind, helpful and enjoy.

Speed Painting Photo Realism

I did this as an excercise for the purpose of, quite simply, practice. It's been a while since I attempted anything photo-real... It's very good to do this kind of thing because it strengthens your freehand drawing abilities, as well as developing an eye for detail. Freehand drawn in photoshop cs2 (from a reference photo off to the side) with a wacom tablet. time-lapsed... real time was about 3 and a half hours. UPDATE: For the people that think this is fake-- simply do a little research. It's as easy as clicking on my username to see the list of all of my other videos. There you will find an array of different subjects and different mediums... Including photo real techniques with real paint. It it's a pretty reasonable conclusion that if I can do the things I do with real paint-- why would I feel the need or insecurity to fake it with the "less impressive" digital mediums? Why waste my time? You could also consider the efforts it would take to fake such a thing- consider the layering of the shadows and gradients... Look at how carefully it is done in these vids. There is a visible build-up of LAYERS of tones shadows and colors. To fake something like that would take so much effort, why would a guy who can do all of the other OBVIOUS traditional medium paintings on the same channel waste his time? TO MANY PEOPLE ASK: Why "photorealism"? Why not just use a camera? The answer is simple. I've made the point many times in my replies, comments and descriptions. But I'll make <b>...</b>

Speed Painting Photorealism... Again.

Another digital painting done from scratch in photoshop using Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. Artwork is completely freehand drawn, with reference photo set off to the side for glancing at. No tracing... ;-) Actual time to do pic was about 3 and a half hours. UPDATE: For the people that think this is fake-- simply do a little research. Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D - which one is better?

So, we reviewed the Nikon D7000 just a few days ago ( www.youtube.com ) and we liked it a lot. With the upgrades, it really has been upped a class, what with the 100% viewfinder, 6fps continuous burst, metal body, as well as 1080p video recording. So, it's only natural that lots of people have been asking us - Canon 7D vs Nikon D7000: which one is better? Well, we take a look in this video by taking photos of a model named Kinki cleaning a BMW. I just couldn't sit back and let this happen without saying something, these are the kinds of things that cause suicides, and even if i can't stop this one getting bigger, if enough people take notice then it will help stem the flow of these kinds of things in the future. I want people to share this video or make their own and let the world know that more people are united against this kind of hatred rather than being for it. As human beings, we are better than this. Portrait Photography using continuous lighting

Gavin Hoey explores with the use of the smick.co.uk 3 head super softbox continuous lighting kit to take portraits. The kit is powerful and versatile, this is an alternative to studio flash for taking portraits, the main advantage is that you see what you get. The kit uses energy saving compact fluorescent daylight bulbs which means that they produce great light and not much heat compared with tungsten redhead type lighting. It can be used as video lighting as well as still photography making this a very versatile bit of kit. www.smick.co.uk

Photography Tutorial Nikon D3100 D7000

froknowsphoto.com I wanted to show you how easy it is to do a full photo shoot with multiple angles and one lens in 10 minutes. As you can see I am shooting with the Nikon D3000 and 35 F/1.8. I was able to capture 4 or 5 different angles from full length to head shots to detailed shots. I guessed my settings based off of pre visualizing my environment. I knew there was not a lot of light inside which told me I should shoot at a higher ISO like 800. I know in the D3000 that if I go higher than 800 ISO i may be compromising the quality of the image. I chose 60th of a second at 1.8 as a starting point than tweaked from there. You have to be very careful when shooting wide open at 1.8 that you do not miss your focus. As you can see in the picture with the pencil you have such a narrow focus that if you move forward or back or your subject moves you may miss your focus all together. Start to get into the habit of pre visualizing your situation so when you walk into it you have a basis for your initial settings. Over time you will start to be able to read the light before you take the camera out of the bag. Be sure to watch the entire video as you will see the photo shoot first followed by a screen flow where I discuss composition of each image as well as how I edited the RAW file.

SF to Paris in Two Minutes

More of these time lapses at beepshow.com I shot a photo roughly every two miles between take-off in San Francisco and landing in Paris CDG to make this airplane time lapse. For some reason the Vimeo version of this is more linked to vimeo.com Shot with a 5d2, a time-lapse controller, and a 16mm - 35mm, mixed with some iPhone shots. The flight path from SF to Paris goes well over greenland and the arctic circle, where you can see "northern" lights from all sides of the plane, which explains why I could shoot them facing South. Big thanks to the folks at uxlondon.com for inviting me to europe to speak - if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have made the trip. The music is a modified template of "Gain" used with permission from DETUNE ltd. denkitribe http - I created this arrangement on the Korg iMS20 iPad App, and it's my first custom score. Edits and pans in After Effects CS5 and iMovie. The photos during take-off and landing are all computer models and totally rendered because I would never use an electronic device during times when the FAA prohibits them. I did get lucky and have a whole row to myself to setup the tripod and gear. Thanks to my neighbors for not minding an SLR click every 2 to 30 seconds for 11 hours, and thanks to the whole Air France flight crew for being insanely friendly and allowing me to shoot. Thanks to @ztaylor for showing me the Korg iMS20 iPad App. Thanks to @jayzombie and the #nerdbird on the way to SXSW this year for helping me come up with the <b>...</b>

Strobist Equipment And Tips by Karl Taylor

Get More FREE Training Videos at my website: www.karltaylorphotography.com In the UK we say "flash" and in the USA they say "strobes". Either way using them for more complex lighting scenarios has become all the rage and the technique has become commonly know as strobist or even strobism. But let's face it, all we are talking about is adding light and how we add light to our subject, preferably without having to spend a small fortune on a load of studio kit, ranger packs and generators! There is however quite a bit more to it than that and the techniques for lighting are covered in depth in our series of DVDs, but what I thought I would share with you today is some information about the kit itself. In this video I take a look at some setups for strobists and some tips on how to make your flash work better and more effectively. Enjoy! Karl Taylor. Lightroom Tutorial White Balance

www.FroKnowsPhoto.com White Balance is one of those settings that many people have questions about. In this video Greg goes into how to select the white balance and tweak it to your liking. This video is for correcting the RAW files white balance opposed to JPEG which you can tweak but not as well. There are a few different tools that Lightoom supplies you with correct for white balance in your RAW files. You have the eye dropper tool which corrects the white balance depending on where you place it in your photo. You have the presets like "as shot" "flash" so on so forth. And you have the tone sliders which allow you to make your own tweaks to the balance. White Balance can take an image that is blue and cold and bring it back to life with a few little tweaks. Bach, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, organ

Bach's most famous organ piece, with a bar-graph score. FAQ Q: Can I download a version to play on my computer/iPod/iPad/iPhone/etc.? A: Yes, you can get that here: musanim.cerizmo.com Q: Where can I get free sheet music for this piece? A: Sheet music for this can be found here: tinyurl.com Q: Who wrote Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor? Q: Isn't that like asking who's buried in Grant's Tomb? A: Heh-heh. A theory has recently (1981) been put forth that JS Bach did not write this piece. A brief summary of the supporting evidence for this theory can be read here: en.wikipedia.org Q: What's wrong with synchronization? A: I don't know, but it appears that if you use this URL, it works better: www.youtube.com Q: Where can I get the mp3 of this? A: You can download it here: www.musanim.com Q: What does the piece look like as a whole? A: There are versions you can print out here www.musanim.com The 'scroll' version is for cutting out and taping together to form a long strip. Q: Where can I get the MIDI file that this was made from? A: I'm not sure it's exactly the same, but the closest I could find was this: www.musanim.com Q: Hey, what happened to my question/comment? A: Questions answered in the FAQ, and comments with nothing to do with the video ("spam"), are removed.
