Hulusi --traditional Chinese music

The hulusi (traditional: 葫蘆絲; simplified: 葫芦丝; pinyin: húlúsī) or cucurbit flute[1] is a free reed wind instrument from China. It is held vertically and has three bamboo pipes which pass through a gourd wind chest; the center pipe has finger holes and the outer two are typically drone pipes. It is not uncommon for a hulusi to have only one drone pipe while the second outer pipe is merely ornamental. The drone pipe has a finger hole, which allows it to be stopped. Advanced configurations have keyed finger holes similar to a clarinet or oboe, which can greatly extend the range of the hulusi to several octaves. The hulusi was originally used primarily in Yunnan province by the Dai and other non-Han ethnic groups but is now played throughout China, and hulusi are manufactured in such northern cities as Tianjin. Like the related free reed pipe called bawu, the hulusi has a very pure, clarinet-like sound.

Polska After Oskar Olofson, Lillhärdal (Hulusi)

The hulusi is a Chinese gourd flute. It was originally used by the Dai people (Dai-zu), and also later, other ethnic minorities (Jin Po and the Wah) of the Yunnan province in souther China. Hulusi is the Han name for the instrument. The Dai people called it bilangdao. The tune I play (after the intro) is another polska I picket up a long time ago from the radio. It was during an interview with the Emma Grut (a Härjedalspipa player) that I heard this tune. It stuck in my head ever since, and I have played it on many different instruments. The polska is after Oskar Olofson from Lillhärdal in Härjedalen. He is the man that started to make Härjedal flutes in Sweden again. Then later on he taught Gunnar Stenmark to carry on that flute maker tradition.

Palästinalied on Chinese Hulusi in Bb

The first video of me playing music from my medieval repertoire. It's the melody to "Palästinalied" a medieval song by Walther von der Vogelweide. Played on a Hulusi in Bb with one of two drones open, pushes my laptop mic to the max :D Oh wait, I've just realized that there is already another medieval music video, Totentanz... So this is the second one :)
