Rescued Baby Hummingbird

READ FULL DESCRIPTION!! This is a baby hummingbird I rescued after it was attacked. The song is "Better Together" by Jack Johnson. UPDATE!!! when she thought she was ready to leave (and she was) she flew off to her favorite patch of the back yard, and her instincts instantly kicked in, and now she's just like all the other hummingbirds. for those that are concerned that she has imprinted on humans and wouldn't survive in the wild, don't worry, she is thriving. she has even successfully migrated and returned back to my yard. and for those who think i didn't know what i was doing, i did NOT feed her plain sugar water. i went outside 3 times a day and caught flies from my compost bin in big bags, crushed them, and mixed them in as well. I also helped her learn to catch flies while flying (not in the video because you obviously wouldn't be able to see the flies). in the end, i don't think it could have worked out any better

Hand feeding Hummingbirds

A hand fed Hummingbird video that is amazing. Taming the Alaskan hummingbird. These hummingbirds were filmed at our lodge in Alaska, no feeder required! Our lodge in Alaska has TONS of these little birds in the summer. Did you know their hearbeat can be as high as 1200 beats ber minute! Mother nature is amazing! These adorable hummingbirds eat right out of our hands here at the lodge. While setting up the cameras for some more handfeeding, these two little hummingbirds gave us "the shot". Though I love the hummingbirds in Alaska, The majority only arrive after migrating from Mexico, looking for feeders along the way. Sometimes I wish we lived somewhere where we could watch baby hummingbirds in their nests. Some of those videos are amazing! NOTE: We don't use red dye anymore. We use 4:1 Water to sugar only. Watch the movements of these fascinating little birds up close and slow in Hi Def! Several birds (Anna's Hummingbirds, males and females) are shown at different angles and shutter speeds. The odd bending and alternating wing movements are just an illusion caused by the camera's high speed shutter... something to do with the CMOS sensor scan rate in conjunction with the shutter movement itself. This strange effect only seems to appear when the shutter speed is cranked way up to 1/1000thsec and 1/2000sec. In reality, the wings really do move in parallel, and are fairly stiff so no detectable bending occurs. Better high speed footage can be seen in the later sequels to this show: Slow Motion Hummingbirds 5 (last half), 6, 7 and 8 (links below) 5: www.youtube.com 6: www.youtube.com 7: www.youtube.com 8: www.youtube.com Enjoy theshow! :-) Note: This is copyrighted material, however, you may download this footage directly from YouTube and use it free of charge in your own non-profit/non-commercial YouTube videos. DARPA Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program

In 2005, DARPA announced the Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program and its goal to develop agile and flyers system that could fit in one hand. This video chronicles the development of a "hummingbird" flyer by Aerovironment from concept to prototype demonstration and introduction to the public. A number of difficult design and engineering challenges were overcome in the course of the program, particularly in the wing structure, propulsion and control actuators. Numerous complete prototypes were built and tested to assess and improve the performance of the systems shown in the video. The final prototype achieves the noteworthy milestone of 2-wing flapping hovering and fast forward flight with all power sources on the aircraft and all controls implemented through modulation of the wing strokes in a shape that resembles a real hummingbird and carries and on-board camera that relays video to the pilot in real time. a female Amethyst-throated Sunangel (Heliangelus amethysticollis) sleeps in Peru. (check out pictures added below) EDIT #2 (2-Mar-2012): It's likely that this bird is in the early stages of arousal from deep torpor after disturbance. The gaping of the bill might be a way to breath deeply and bring in plenty of oxygen. When they are disturbed in torpor, they try to warm up as quickly as possible and that involves intense shivering. But initially, they are too cold for high-speed muscle action so it's hard to see the shivering movements. The high pitched squeaking sound it is making is likely a cute side-effect of the gaping for oxygen. EDIT: Alright, Thank you Reddit for blowing this up. Lets clear a few things up here. The bird is in a container that is attached to machines that measure how much oxygen the bird is consuming. Hummingbirds 2007 Unbelievable!

They land on your fingers, they eat up sugar morning and night, and they even invade my house! They swarm all day long! This video was recorded all in one day. Please before posting incorrect information give this a read through: www.hummingbirds.net Hummingbirds don't get sick from eating "too much" sugar, they just feed less frequently. If you want to attract hummers use a rich mixture to initially attract them, you can then cut the sugar down to see more activity from the same birds who will feed more often, or you can leave the sugar the same but you may not see them feeding quite as often. I use a mixture of roughly 6 cups of sugar per 15 cups of water, give or take a bit and store it in the fridge. I've been feeding hummers for over 8 years at our current home and I get loads of them coming back every year. :)

A montage of HD and high speed footage showing these fascinating little birds from 1/4 to 1/40 actual (realtime) speed. Cameras placed in a number of different angles give some new perspectives, and a top-down angle shows the bird lapping-up the nectar with what appears to be a forked tongue! Who knew? :-) Some great chases and flying scenes round out this video. HD semi-slow-motion (1/4 realtime) video shot with a Canon HF100, Slow motion (1/10 - 1/40 realtime) lower res footage shot with a Casio EX-F1. As it turns out, the first half of this video, which was shot with a Canon HF100 HD camcorder and high-speed shutter, makes it LOOK like the wings are sometimes bending and beating alternately, but that is in fact an effect of the CMOS scan and shutter. The last half of this video (from 1:33 on) was filmed with a Casio EX-F1 high speed/slow motion camera, and shows the wing movement more accurately - they do indeed beat in parallel rather than alternately. :-) The soundtrack features new music "TimeWarp" from Technician (your's truly),MP3 downloads and CDs available on the Technician Website: technician.jcmdi.com Note This is copyrighted material, however, you may download this footage directly from YouTube and use it free of charge in your own non-profit/non-commercial YouTube videos. Wangari Maathai: The Hummingbird

In February, BGCI hosted a talk by Professor Wangari Maathai, the women's rights campaigner, founder of the Green Belt Movement and Nobel Peace Prize winner - the first African woman to have been awarded this accolade. And well deserved this accolade is, she is an amazing woman who inspired and motivated the audience at the Royal Geographical Society. Professor Maathai is a consummate story-teller and throughout her speech I was amazed by the dedication and belief she has in the work she and her organisation are doing, the optimism she displays and the determination which has seen her through many difficult years as a woman's and environmental campaigner in Kenya. She told us a story - a tale of a courageous hummingbird. It stuck with everyone who was there - watch the clip to see why.

Charles Csuri, Fragmentation Animations, 1968 - 1970: Hummingbird (1968)

In 1967, Csuri began creating animations. Again, the artist used his drawings as the foundation for his creative exploration with the computer. With Artist into Frog, Aging Process, and Hummingbird, Csuri expanded his notion of object transformation to include the morphing of human faces and animals. Today, morphing is characterized by a seamless transition between forms. Csuris early fragmentation animations foreshadowed morphing technology. However, the artist, more interested in modern art than photographic realism, used the time-honored artistic relationship between form and abstraction to accomplish the seamless morphing transition between the forms. csuriproject.osu.edu

Slow Motion Hummingbirds 2 HD 720p

Here is some spectacular HD footage of a female Allen's Hummingbird feeding... At times the wing beats are in perfect sync with the high-speed shutter, giving the illusion that the wings are stopped! A female Anna's Hummingbird also makes an appearence... Details: Filmed on 3-6-2009, just as Spring begins and the seasonal/migratory species begin their return to the area. This footage was filmed with a Canon HF100 HD camcorder, with 1/2000 sec. shutter speed, 1080p, 30fps. The footage was then slowed-down to 1/4 speed, giving an effective frame rate of 7.5fps. The first bird shown is a female Allen's Hummingbird, and has a faster wingbeat than the Anna's hummingbird (2nd bird show). At times the wingbeats were a perfect multiple of 30, so the camera's shutter froze the wings in roughly the same prosition in the wingstroke cycle for several frames in a row - giving the illusion that the wings had actually stopped moving for short periods of time. Notice the bird is swallowing and looking around while she seems to hang there otherwise motionless. Really cool effect! Also note that the weird wing bending and alternating wingstrokes "swimming" flight is an illusion created by the rolling shutter and CCD scan rate used by this camcorder model. In reality, the wings really do flap in parallel as one would expect, which can be seen in the last half of Slow Motion Hummingbirds 5 and later (6, 7, 8, etc.), where a Casio EX-F1 high speed camera is used... Hummingbird

Many flowers and their pollinators have fallen into evolutionary step with one another in a process known as coevolution. For example, fuchsia flowers, which rely heavily on hummingbirds to disperse their pollen, usually have brilliant red or pink flowers with a long, slender shape and little or no scent. All of these attributes attract hummingbirds, tiny, slender-beaked birds with a poor sense of smell and eyes that detect colors in the red portion of the visible spectrum. The hummingbird also benefits from this relationship. In return for dispersing the fuchsias pollen, the hummingbird has almost exclusive access to the sweet, nutritious nectar buried deep at the base of the fuchsia flower, where shorter-beaked animals cannot reach it. Frankie Laine - Hummingbird

Charted #17 in 1955 This song was one of my favorites but was over shadowed by the Mary Ford version. Columbia never even put the recording on any of their albums so it never made it on a US CD. It was a very hard song to find for many years. In the last several years CD's made in Europe have included this overlooked song that should have been treated better.

Nevershoutnever - Hummingbird - w/ lyrics

I like you Girl, you don't got nothing to prove to me I know that times have been rough For the both of us But I'll pray for change You see, this world has lots to offer but In time it will go dark And if this love is what we say it is, I'm sure we will go far And with a girl as sweet as you, There's not much else I can do, But fall for you. You know that I'm a wreck, And you know I can't breathe; At the edge of my seat with each word. And as the months turn into years Just know that I will wait here for you Cause I prayed for change... You see, this world has lots to offer but In time it will go dark And if this love is what we say it is, I'm sure we will go far And with a girl as sweet as you, There's not much else I can do, But fall for you.
