110 Hurdles - Technique Day via the Ups and Downs


Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - The hurdler in me took my staying fit workout over the hurdles. I did the ups and downs workout with a twist. 10 total hurdles: set up 6 up at 39 inches, 19 feet apart for a quick 3-step rhythm and 4 down at 42 inches, set on normal mark (30 feet apart) for the basic 5-step rhythm. Total workout only covered 80 hurdles when the norm would be around 100. 8 x ups and downs with decent recovery. 3-4 minutes to keep a focus on technique more so then endurance.

June 19, 2011 the day before my big Birthday Hurdle Session - 42s on 44th I pulled out the resistance band I home brewed to meet the needs of my creative thinking on how to strengthen those muscles used in hurdling. The short video is two of several supplementary exercises I do with a band/ tubing that's got pretty good resistance when stretched to put in some work. The first exercise is for the trail leg and with each drill I work the dominant and weaker leg for balance in strengthening both sides. Second exercise if for the lead leg.

Don't Sweat The Technique - It's Hurdles Day


August 25, 2011 - At 44 years of age it still feels great to go out to the track and workout like a competing athlete simply to stay fit. Fit in mind, body and spirit. It's refreshing to do the things I do and I'm thankful for it. I love experimenting with how I go about a workout and this particular hurdle day I combined a short sprint workout and hurdling (drilling over 5, one step hurdling). Haven't done this in quite some time and it actually felt good going over the 39 hurdle reactive and with some pop in my step. Part 1 - 6 x 60 meters w/ 3 minutes recovery with increased intensity going into the next. I peaked at 6.7 hand time. Self timed, starting the watch on first step. Part 2 - 10 over 5 hurdles at 39 inches. Spacing was 9.75 of my feet recovery 90 seconds - 2 minutes

Hurdle Training - Need for Speed with some Technique hurdling


February 1, 2012 - I took it to the track today with the purpose of working the 3-step rhythm between hurdles at a low height. Why? So the focus will be totally on creating that fast rhythm at race height. I followed it up with hurdles set up at race height for the 5-step over the top to focus on technique into/ over and off the hurdle. Workout - 5 sets ( Sprint over 6 hurdles at 30inches/ walk back and 5-step over 3 hurdles at 42 inches) 5 minutes between sets.

Hurdle Walk Overs


www.sihunt.co.uk Hurdle Walk Overs - Right knee drive, left knee drive and full walk overs. Focus on moving your legs fast and freely, using a big and fast arm action. This exercise is as much about arm technique as leg technique so make sure to remember this. Try placing white tape or arm bands around your wrists to you can easily see if you are driving you arms up to your eye level. Keep an upright body posture through out. 5 Hurdles 3-4 feet apart, waist height. Drive the right knee and step over the hurdle placing the foot straight down on the floor. Follow with the left using a hurdling trail leg action, again placing the foot straight down on the floor. Repeat as fast as possible for all 5 hurdles. This is one rep, perform 3 reps and move on to left knee knee drives. The technique is the same driving the left knee first, perform 3 reps and move onto full walk overs. For the full walk overs, step over each hurdle in one stride placing the foot straight down. All these exercises are good for your running action and hip mobility.
