Super Hurricanes

Why some tropical storms erupt into monster hurricanes capable of wrecking coastlines. Can they be predicted? September 12th, 2008. A hurricane named Ike is headed toward the beaches of Galveston Island in Texas. The eye of the storm, where the most intense winds are, is still hundreds of miles away... Yet the rising water has already spread over much of the island. Eight days back, researchers had flown into Ike and measured its winds... at 145 miles per hour. That made it a category 4 out of 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Moving into the western Atlantic, Ike fed on a deep layer of warm ocean water, sweeping it up and growing to deadly intensity. Over a million people were evacuated from coastlines in Cuba as the storm approached. Ike weakened as it passed over the island. But as it entered the Gulf of Mexico by late September 10th, now on a beeline for Texas, it had begun to re-intensify. Residents of Galveston were ordered to evacuate. Most of the 58000 residents did. Thousands remained to brave the storm.... Despite the memory of another storm... over a century ago... that showed how vulnerable this low-lying island can be. September 6th, 1900... powerful waves began lashing the coastlines of Louisiana and Mississippi. With swells rising in Galveston, on the 7th, a hurricane warning was put into effect. That afternoon, a ship sailing from New Orleans encountered the storm. The captain estimated winds at 100 miles per hour. But at this point, little was known about ...

www.hurricanetrack.com This segment is from my 2005 DVD entitled "Tracking the Hurricanes: 2005". Here, in part one, I begin tracking hurricane Katrina with my colleague, Mike Watkins, in south Florida. From there, Mike and I head over to the coast of Mississippi to complete the mission of observing and documenting one of the deadliest hurricanes in US history. However, the story does not end with landfall as we will see in part two.

Hurricane Katrina Part Two

www.hurricanetrack.com This is the second part of the three part series of my Katrina documentary. This comes from my successful "Tracking the Hurricanes: 2005" DVD which chronicles the landfalling US hurricanes during the historic 2005 hurricane season. In part two, the action really begins. It is now daytime on August 29, 2005 and Katrina is making landfall along the central Gulf Coast. I am in Gulfport, Mississippi working with colleague Mike Watkins. We are seeking refuge at a hotel near I-10 along hwy 49 in Gulfport. We have set up three remotely operated cameras down along the waterfront and are hoping to capture extraordinary video- as well as stream it live to the world. Little did we know that the storm surge would be so enormous that our three camera systems would be washed away- two of them lost forever. The third was found but human error prevented it from working properly. I shift my focus from finding the other missing "black boxes" to documenting the people of a hurricane-torn Mississippi. Part three will sum things up with a trip back to Mississippi 47 days after Katrina.

This strong Cat.-3 Hurricane struck several coastal areas of New England in September of 1938 with little warning, killing 256 people and moving at a forward speed over 50 MPH. The Blue Hill Observatory at Milton, Massachusetts reported a sustained wind of 121 MPH with a gust of 183 MPH. Hartford Connecticut had a low pressure reading of 28.04 inches. Hurricane Opal - Fort Walton Beach, FL - October 4, 1995

This is a sample of my Hurricane Opal chase footage. This video was taken during Opal's landfall in the western Florida panhandle, at Fort Walton Beach, on October 4, 1995. A day prior to landfall, Hurricane Opal had strengthened rapidly to near Category Five intensity, with sustained winds of 150mph and a minimum central pressure of 916mb (27.05in). During the following twelve hours the storm steadily weakened, however, Opal was still a very large and powerful Category Three at landfall, with sustained winds of 125mph and a central pressure of 942mb (27.82in). Hurricane conditions begin at about 3min 30sec into the video and the eyewall occurs from 4min 50sec through 7min 40sec in. Peak winds at my location were sustained between 100-110mph with gusts to 140mph. The highest officially recorded surface wind in Opal was a gust to 144mph at Hurlburt Field, near Mary Esther, Florida, in southwest Okaloosa county, which was three miles west of my location. The highest storm surge at my location was approximately 13ft and with the ground elevation at 8-10ft above sea-level, this resulted in a surge depth of 3-5ft, with higher waves. The peak surge and maximum inundation occurs just prior to the eye/calm at about 9min 40sec into the video. Though the eastern edge of Opal's eye did pass over my location, winds never fell below 20-30mph, I did record a minimum pressure of 960.3mb (28.36in) during this time.

Hurricane Ivan

www.hurricanetrack.com This chapter from our 2004 DVD captures powerful hurricane Ivan as we observed it in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The back story is that we had taken our Green Isuzu Rodeo, the first "chase vehicle" of ours, and turned it in to a bright yellow un-manned drone. The idea was to put it in a big hurricane, loaded with weather instruments and cameras, and allow it to record the worst while we went somewhere far safer. The Isuszu has been through many hurricanes and tropical storms in its six years of use but Ivan would be its last mission. The project was a success and led to our work in subsquent years in hurricanes such as Katrina, Rita, Wilma and Ike.

Hurricane Danielle 2010

Mix your music! Learn GarageBand in 30 Days! mhlo.co www.mahalo.com Hurricane Danielle has formed in the far Atlantic, becoming the second hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season. On the morning of August 23, 2010, Tropical Storm Danielle was centered about 2700 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. The storm was packing sustained 65 mile per hour winds and later in the day turned into a hurricane with top sustained winds at 75 miles per hour, which forecasters expect to strengthen over the next few days. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Danielle was moving west-northwest at about 16 miles per hour on the morning of August 23. Where will the Hurricane wind up? It's too early to tell. Hurricane Center meteorologists were predicting that Danielle could increase in forward speed "over the next day or so" and "should make a turn toward the northwest by Wednesday," August 25, 2010. Hurricane Danielle is the second of this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began on June 1, 2010. Experts have predicted that this year's season will be an active one, with up to 20 named Atlantic storms. Between eight and 12 could become hurricanes. To date, only Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the season, went on to become a hurricane. Are the tropics beginning to heat up? Some experts say "yes." Meteorologist Rick Knabb of the Weather Channel says "There are signs that the Atlantic is acting like it should in August and September ...
