Handel: Semele, HWV 58 "Where'er you walk" John Aler

I finally got the recording of the whole oratorio so I can upload this aria as it was meant to be sung: by a tenor, John Aler.. Jupiter Where'er you walk, cool gales shall fan the glade; Trees, where you sit, shall crowd into a shade. Where'er you tread, the blushing flow'rs shall rise, And all things flourish where'er you turn your eyes.

The libretto is adapted by an unknown hand from that by Silvio Stampiglia for an earlier opera of the same name by Giovanni Bononcini. Stampiglia's libretto was itself based on one by Nicolò Minato that was set by Francesco Cavalli in 1654. Serse is considered Handel's most Mozartian opera, and one of his finest. Passion is mixed with farce and satire; the folly of human nature is exposed but never ridiculed. The opera is set in Persia in 480 BC and is very loosely based upon Xerxes I of Persia, though there is little in either the libretto or music that is relevant to that setting. Xerxes is a pants role; that is, it is a male role played by a mezzo-soprano.The opening aria, "Ombra mai fu", sung by Xerxes to a tree ...

This is the third movement of Handel's recorder sonata in A minor. I was inspired to learn the first movement many years ago after hearing Kenji Ogawa's performance of it. Many years later, I listened to the rest of the sonata and decided I wanted to learn the rest of it too. The fourth and final movement will be more difficult than anything I've ever attempted, so wish me luck guys! ^_^ Much thanks to KresimirCindric for making this lovely backtrack.
