To honor women's service in the IDF in celebration of International Women's Day, the following is a collection of some of the interesting and noteworthy roles women are taking on throughout their service. Women have served in the IDF since its inception, and in Israeli defense organizations before the creation of the State of Israel (exceptional women such as Hannah Senesh and Sarah Aaronsohn, for example). Each year, 1500 female combat soldiers are drafted into the IDF, a number which has remained consistent in recent years. Female soldiers also play crucial roles in command and control, commanding positions, and many others.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have released a video of Israeli Navy commandos boarding a ship in the 'Freedom Flotilla', a convoy carrying humanitarian aid and international activists to Gaza. Reports say up to 20 people were killed and dozens injured as Israeli commandos stormed the vessels over a hundred kilometres off Gaza's coast. Some of the ships have been towed to the Israeli port city of Ashdod.

A short while ago, Israel Navy soldiers boarded the vessels which were en-route to the Gaza Strip, attempting to break the maritime security blockade that is in accordance with international law. The boarding was carried out following numerous calls to the activists onboard and during different points at sea. Following their unwillingness to cooperate, and after ignoring calls to divert to the port of Ashdod, the decision was made to board the vessels and lead them there. Contact was made between the Israel Navy and the vessels Tahrir and Saorise which are sailing towards the Gaza Strip. Last night, in response to reports of a serious car accident on the road toward a Palestinian area in Judea and Samaria, IDF paramedics sped off in order to aid the injured. Hamas turn a Gaza neighborhood into a warzone. This map, confiscated Wednesday (Jan. 7) by IDF paratroopers operating in the north of Gaza, shows how Hamas uses an entire neighborhood, rigging it with explosive devices and putting the entire civilian population at great risk. The map shows the al-Tatraa neighborhood in Gaza City divided into three areas of operation (red, blue and green). The dots on the map indicate where Hamas operatives had planted a variety of IEDs (improvised explosive devices), with the colors indicating the type of IED. Additional marks show sniper positions next to mosques. Next to the entrance of the el-Tawid mosque near to Shauuda Plaza at the top left of the map there is a sniper posting with marking indicating the direction of fire marked on the map. At the bottom center of the map there is a gas station where Hamas planted an IED which, if activated, could cause a very large explosion throughout the neighborhood. Three Israeli Navy combat ships have surrounded the only vessel of the Freedom Flotilla trying to break the naval blockade of Gaza. Other ships from the humanitarian mission were detained earlier in Greece. The French yacht Dignity al-Karama with sixteen activists, crew members and journalists onboard was stopped en route to the Gaza Strip. The ship had intended to reach its destination by Tuesday afternoon. Israel demanded that the ship turn and sail to Israel's Ashdod port or to Egypt, a military spokesman said. According to sources on the boat, the military say marines will raid the ship if it attempts to proceed.
