Dozuki: A new way to write how-to manuals

For the first time ever, iFixit is branching out from our core business of selling parts and tools. We're going to start selling software—the same software that we use to run iFixit. This is something that astute observers may have expected from the development, and success, of Make: Projects. User manuals are stuck in the 20th century. Even the best manuals are still distributed as static PDFs. Service technicians are often stuck with documentation that is months, if not years, out of date. Users hate IKEA-style manuals with vague instructions, confusing graphics, and no photos. For more information head over to www.dozuki.com

How Siri Knows When You're There

During our iPhone 4S teardown, iFixit buddy Markus noted that the new iPhone had a rather unusual-looking black component next to the ambient light sensor. We didn't make much of a fuss about it at the time since we were knee-deep in disassembly pictures, but the little black box certainly piqued our curiosity. Now that the teardown is wrapped up, we've re-opened the mystery and made a neat discovery about the 4S: that black component is an infrared LED, and the little bugger almost always wants to know if you're nearby. ESD is NOT a Venereal Disease

Beware, a short stroll on your Dacron® carpet can load the surface of your skin and clothes with enough spare electrons to cook that RAM you just took out of its special little pink or silver bag. Recipes for Abbacchio Al Forno aside, cooking your RAM is something to avoid. If you are new to electronics tinkering you may not have heard of electrostatic discharge (ESD) safety procedures, but as a rule of thumb the smaller the components inside your device get the more sensitive they are to those crackles and pops you hear on a dry day when you pet the cat. iFixIt shows how to replace your "dead" iPhone battery

www.uberpulse.com On the sidelines of the Flash Memory Summit today, I met with iFixIt CEO, Kyle Wien, to talk about his San Luis Obispo company (about 2 hours South of Silicon Valley). iFixIt helps consumers repair their own Apple laptops, iPods and now the iPhone. In a nutshell, the company sells components (screens, batteries, drives, logic boards...), new or used, as well as tools through its website and provides for FREE how-to guides to do the repairs yourself, for a fraction of the cost that you would have paid at Apple or one of the professional repair shops. Officially, Apple is not too happy about that. Especially when it claims that some parts are "non-user replaceable" and when days later iFixIt publishes a guide on how to do it yourself. For iFixIt CEO, it's not only absolutely legal but you won't void the product's warranty if you do it! So what's the catch? Well, you'll need to be a bit handy, which is not really my case. But at least for people like me, it gives an idea of how much I should spend to repair my MacBook/iPod and avoid scams! The video interview is coming soon (iMovie crashed and lost everything :-(. www.uberpulse.com

iPhone 4S Teardown Review

We sent our co-founder 18 hours into the future, to Melbourne, Australia, to get his skillful hands on Apple's latest iPhone offering: the iPhone 4S. But surprise! Fed-Ex one-upped us by delivering an iPhone 4S early to (iFixit user) Markus Weiher in Germany, and with Markus's help we were able to give the iPhone 4S the teardown treatment it deserves. Also, you, like many of us, might be wondering if you can install Siri on your iPhone/iPad/iPod. While the verdict is still out on that question, this video has a couple of possible reasons why it's not available. This video highlights the most interesting changes made to the iPhone 4S; for complete technical details and high resolution photos check out the teardown at: www.ifixit.com Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for all the latest teardowns and repair videos: www.youtube.com Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com Friend us on Facebook: www.facebook.com
