The pilot has done an excellent job; - there's a busy public road beyond the boundary fence,less than 50 metres from the end of the runway. Please don't ask me why he aborted; Sorry, I simply don't know. I have been advised that in point of fact this is a (former) IL-22 airborne command post stripped of mission equipment - note the fin tip pod which regular IL-18s do not have. Interestingly, they have now extended the end of the runway that the plane is taking off towards by another 400 meters I believe. The video was taken by the crew of a C-130 that was recording an F-4 Phantom II. Off in the distance, the Iranian plane can be seen tumbling to Earth and crashing in a giant fireball. Accident is actually from the 2009 Tehran air show, when the modified IL-76MD AWACs plane collided in mid-air with an F-5E Tiger II. In all, seven crew members were killed.

The Ilyushin Il-78 (NATO reporting name Midas) is a four-engined aerial refueling tanker based on the Il-76. Indian Air Force bought 6 aircraft. Customized version of Il-78 known as the Il-78MKI have been inducted into the Air Force. The Indian Air Force refers to the aircraft as "MARS" (Mid Air Refuelling System) and has raised a new unit (No 78 Sqn). The Ilyushin Il-78 (NATO reporting name Midas) is a four-engined aerial refueling tanker. The aircraft is equipped refuelling pods, one under each wing, the third on the port side of the aft fuselage. The operator controls the hose and drogue system from the tail gunners position, from which the guns and radar have been removed.

In 1967, the Soviet Air Forces drew up a specification for a jet-powered shturmovik or armoured ground attack aircraft. While Sukhoi designed an all-new single seat aircraft, the Su-25, Ilyushin proposed a modified version of their Il-40 of 1953 under the designation Il-42, which unlike the Sukhoi was a two seat aircraft with a remotely controlled rear gun turret. The design was rejected by the Soviet Air Forces, but Ilyushin decided to continue development as a private venture, renaming the programme Il-102.[1] The Il-102 first prototype flew on 25 September 1982, with a second airframe built for static tests, and carried out 250 test flights until it was grounded in 1984 when the engine life expired.[2] The tail turret of the Il-102, armed with a GSh-23L twin barreled cannon The Il-102 was a low-winged monoplane with moderately swept (30 degrees) wings and powered by two Klimov RD-33I turbofans (non-afterburning versions of the engines that power the Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter). It was highly unusual for its time in having a rear gun turret, something not seen in ground attack aircraft since the World War II Il-2 Shturmovik and Il-10, the Il-102's spiritual ancestors, controlled remotely by a gunner sitting in a cockpit above the trailing edge of the wing. The crew cockpits, engines and fuel tanks were armoured to protect against ground fire. "The flying tank" Thanks to the heavy armor protection, an Il-2 could take a great deal of punishment and proved difficult for both ground and aircraft fire to shoot down. One Il-2 in particular was reported to have returned safely to base despite receiving more than 600 direct hits and having all its control surfaces completely shredded as well as numerous holes in its main armor and other structural damage. Some enemy pilots favored aiming down into the cockpit and wing roots in diving attacks on the slow, low-flying Il-2 formations.Several Luftwaffe aces claimed to attack while climbing from behind, out of view of the rear gunner, aiming for the Il-2's non-retractable oil cooler. This has been disputed by some Il-2 pilots in postwar interviews, since Il-2s typically flew very close to the ground (cruise altitudes below 50 m (160 ft) were common) and the radiator protruded a mere 10 cm (4 in) from the aircraft. A major threat to the Il-2 was German ground fire. In postwar interviews, Il-2 pilots reported 20 mm (0.79 in) and 37 mm (1.46 in) artillery as the primary threat. While the fabled 88 mm (3.46 in) calibre gun was formidable, low-flying Il-2s presented too fast-moving a target for the 88's relatively low rate of fire, and while occasional hits were scored Soviet pilots apparently did not treat the 88 with the same respect as high-altitude Western heavy bomber crews. Similarly the attempts in Finland during summer '44 to augment the small numbers of 20/40mm AA in <b>...</b>

I was just about to leave this location already, because I thought that there is now way for an airplane to land during these stormy weather conditions. But just a few seconds later I noticed the Ilyushin was already on the ILS and I started filming this nice crossstorm landing. The only thing I can say is: Russian Pilot skills !!!
