After digging my way through a number of Macs the day before (see linked video below), I'm upgrading one more machine. This time it's swapping out the RAM buried deep inside a G4 iMac. Since many people have asked: 700MHz or 800MHz iMacs take PC133 RAM, max of 512MB in each slot, 1GB total. 1GHz G4 iMacs or faster take PC 2100 or PC2700 and (even though Apple never approved it) can handle 1GB max in each slot, for a total of 2GB. Apple never approved it because 1GB RAM modules were not available during the production lifetime of these models. But the 1GHz or faster G4 iMacs can and do take up to a total of 2GB of RAM.

This is a first look at Apple's new 27-inch iMac with a Quad-Core 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 processor. The new iMacs feature Intel's Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs and updated ATI graphics processors, while retaining their screen sizes of 21.5 and 27-inch configurations. The new CPU line up starts out at a dual-core 3.06 and 3.2 GHz Core i3 CPUs, a 2.8 and 3.6 GHz Core i5, and a 2.93 GHz quad-core Core i7. Memory configurations start out at 4 GB and the iMac can support up to 16 GB of RAM. New to the iMac is an optional 256 GB solid state drive for the 27-inch Macs. The SSD drives can be used as a primary or secondary hard drive. Graphics wise, 21.5-inch iMacs ship with either a Radeon HD 4670 with 256 MB or a Radeon HD 5670 with 512 MB. This is a computer mod of a 17" iMac G4. The computer has been modified to function as an external monitor that can connect to any AV source. Currently it is connected to an Intel Core 2 Duo running Windows 7 that has been skinned to look like Leopard. The computer contains a resistive touch screen, which works very well with the iMacs movable neck. All wires run through the neck and can be connected via the back of the iMac's base. As the original iMac used a non-standard TMDS connection, this mod was accomplished by replacing the LCD with a standard LVDS LCD, placing the monitor components (inverter/power source, lcd controller, keypad) into the base. This required rewiring the entire neck. The touchscreen wires also go down the neck and connect to the touch controller in the base. I am using a small windows computer that I have currently, but hope to eventually purchase a mac mini to have an upgraded touch screen fully functional iMac G4. The first addition to my Mac collection. I use this iMac G3 regularly mostly for the internet and iTunes. When I originally got this iMac, it had a common problem with these slot-loading iMacs where the through age and heat, the headphone board solders break and the connection between the headphone ports and the board is interrupted leading the iMac to think that headphones are plugged in all the time not giving the speakers any sound and since the connection was interrupted, headphones didn't work either. Using glue and a soldering iron, I was able to repair the iMac headphone board and the iMac was given the gift of sound as heard in this video.
