BrailleTouch Helps Visually Impaired Users

A team from Georgia Tech, led by Post Doctorate Fellow Mario Romero (School of Interactive Computing) has designed BrailleTouch for touchscreen mobile devices. The prototype app allows visually impaired people to easily type and opens the door for everyone to text or type without looking at the screen. For more information, visit www.gatech.edu

NAVI -- Navigational Aids for the Visually Impaired

hci.uni-konstanz.de NAVI (Navigational Aids for the Visually Impaired) is a student project aiming at improving indoor navigation for visually impaired by leveraging the Microsoft Kinect camera, a vibrotactile waistbelt and markers from the AR-Toolkit. While the "white cane" is a good tool to improve navigation for visually impaired, it has certain drawbacks such as a small radius or that it just detects objects that are on the ground (during typical use). We wanted to augment the visually impaired person's impression of a room or building by providing vibro-tactile feedback that reproduces the room's layout. For this, depth information from the Kinect is mapped by our software onto three pairs of Arduino LilyPad vibration motors located at the left, center and right of the waist. These pairs of vibration motors are hot glued into a fabric waist belt and connected to an Arduino 2009 board. To increase the impact of the vibration motor they were put into the cap of a plastic bottle. The Arduino in the waist belt is connected via usb to a laptop that was mounted onto a special backpack-construction, which has holes for cables and fan. To support point-to-point navigation usually a seeing-eye dog is used. This dog however must be trained for certain routes, costs a lot of money and gets tired soon. In certain research projects GPS is used to provide this point-to-point navigation, however GPS is not applicable for indoor scenarios. We wanted to utilize the rgb camera of the ...

Police Drugging Occupy Minnesota Activists Goes Viral!

Video documentation by local activists and independent media shows that police officers and county deputies from across Minnesota have been picking up young people near Peavey Plaza for a training program to recognize drug-impaired drivers. Multiple participants say officers gave them illicit drugs and provided other incentives to take the drugs. The Occupy movement, present at Peavey Plaza since April 7th, appears to be targeted as impaired people are dropped off at the Plaza, and others say they've been rewarded for offering to snitch on the movement. Local independent media activists and members of Communities United Against Police Brutality began investigating police conduct around the Plaza after witnessing police dropping off impaired people at the plaza and hearing rumors that they were offering people drugs. We videotaped police conduct and interviewed participants, learning some very disturbing information about the DRE program. Officers stated on record the DRE program, run by the Minnesota State Patrol, has no Institutional Review Board or independent oversight. They agreed no ambulances or EMTs were on site at the Richfield MnDOT facility near the airport where most subjects were taken. Multiple times, participants left Peavey Plaza sober, returned intoxicated, and said they'd been given free drugs by law enforcement. We documented on more than one occasion, someone being told they were sober by one officer, and then picked up by a different officer, and ...

GEB Guide Dog Salty and Omar Rivera at WTC on 9/11

I took these clips from an excellent program aired on the National Geographic Channel (NGC) called Where Were You. It is one of many excellent shows NGC is showing to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11. What was of particular interest to my wife & myself was the story of Omar Rivera and his guide dog Salty. Salty was a guide dog that came from Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB). GEB is an internationally accredited, nonprofit guide dog school with a 50-plus year legacy of providing the blind and visually impaired with superior guide dogs, training, and lifetime support services. We are currently puppy raisers for GEB and have been raising/training Vera (6VV10) for the last ~11 months... and have about 3 more months to work with her before she goes back up to GEB in NY for another 4 to 6 months of intensive training- we call it "going off to college". I was not surprised for an instant to see that Salty came back to be with his visually impaired owner. That is what these dogs do. They are totally committed to taking care of their owners. It is hard to understand how incredible a bond and relationship this is. One of the most common questions we get asked by people is how can we give up Vera. We have been lucky enough to have attended a Graduation Ceremony at GEB where visually impaired persons finish about a month long training course where the dog and the person learn to work together. These clips that I pulled out of the hour program help explain why puppy raisers ...

Shikorinatat Part 10

The message is a simple one: Make the right choice—don't drink and drive. Yet, we know that hundreds of Eritreans every year continue to make the wrong choices. Every day hundreds of families and communities experience the tragedy and pain inflicted by impaired drivers. The loss extends beyond fatalities and the impact on families. Everyone pays for impaired driving with higher taxes, higher health care costs and higher insurance premiums. You Drink & Drive. You Lose
