Mercury Pollution from Compact Fluorescent vs Incandescent Light Bulbs

Here I thought I'd share a bit of research I did over the past few days. Are incandescents better because they don't contain mercury? NO. We can reduce mercury pollution from CFLs to zero by taking two steps: 1) use clean sources of power, 2) recycle the bulbs after they blow. Think about it.

Philips EcoVantage incandescent light bulbs: cool to the touch

Info on the alleged "2012 incandescent ban": members.misty.com Philips EcoVantage are halogen incandescent light bulbs designed to meet the new 2012 efficiency standards, with brighter lighting at lower wattages and longer service life -- all without the disadvantages of compact fluorescents. And thanks to the shape of the halogen capsule inside, the bottom of the glass bulb stays cool to the touch. EcoVantage bulbs are available in regular Soft White as well as less yellowey "Natural Light" (similar to GE Reveal), in a variety of wattages. So far I've been able to find them on the shelf at A&P and Wegman's, plus you can order them online.

Reenacting Edison's Invention of the Incandescent Light Bulb

Produced in conjunction with Light's Golden Jubilee, a campaign celebrating the 50th anniversary of Thomas Edison' invention of the commercially available electric light bulb, which ended with an event held in Dearborn, Michigan on October 21, 1929. In the evening, after a banquet in Thomas Edisons honor, Edison, Henry Ford, and Herbert Hoover went to Edisons reconstructed Menlo Park Laboratory, New Jersey, laboratory in Greenfield Village. Here they met with Edisons former assistant, Francis Jehl, for a reenactment of Edisons creation of the first successful incandescent light bulb fifty years before. Modern subtitles have been added to compensate for the primitive late 1920s sound recording of the event.

Light Bulbs vs. The Nanny State

In September, the European Union banned the sale of 100-watt incandescent light bulbs, with lawbreakers facing up to $70000 in fines. Over the next few years, bans on lower-wattage bulbs kick in. In the United States, similar legislation comes into play in 2012. The idea is to kickstart the market for compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), which use less energy than conventional incandescents. Although CFLs present any number of problems (even beyond a much higher initial cost), governments all over the globe are determined to make them the new standard. Invented in its modern form by Thomas Edison in 1879, the light bulb became synonymous with a brilliant idea. Now, it seems, it's just one more symbol of a nanny state that increasingly dictates more choices in our public and private lives. "Light bulbs vs. The Nanny State" is produced by Meredith Bragg and Nick Gillespie. Approximately two minutes. Go to reason.tv for embed code and downloadable versions.

About 90 minutes later, the chocolate bunny under the incandescent light melts since about 90 percent of energy from them is emitted as heat. Energy efficient LED lights produce significantly less heat. In the middle of the time lapse, the bunny under the incandescent light fell over. Tungsten ballasted fluorescent lamp circuit (100W filament lamp and 20W fluorescent tube)

Such things use to be available where a mixture of fluorescent and incandescent lighting was required back in the 50s and 60s. You could get special filament lamps to use in series with a fluorescent tube and special MCFB or MCFD tubes with one or two internal conductive stripes connected to the opposite cathodes suitable for use with a tungsten ballast circuit or resistor ballast. I've tried this before and it does indeed work so this time I decided to video it. You can also see that it works without a starter provided the tube is near an earthed object so I had to use my hand, also look how the electronic starter performs terribly with this circuit!

Light Bulbs, Mr Stinkypants and the CFL

www.richsoil.com The adventures of Mr. Stinkypants! Starting off with a career in light bulb engineering, Mr. Stinkypants finds out that he is not the only person trying to make a better light bulb. His career starts out with incandescent lights and later he moves to the world of fluorescent lights - or CFLs. Thes story starts out with a re-creation of "the light bulb conspiracy" covered in about 60 seconds. But this topic is far better covered in the documentary "planned obsolescence" www.permies.com Then the story pops into talking about the new fangled fluorescent light - CFL. This true story is about a thousand times richer than what I present here. This story skips past the CFL claims for lifespan, toxicicity and price. It does tell a story that I think most people don't know - the CFL is subsidized before you buy it so it appears to be much cheaper than it really is. Then it talks about the ban on the traditional incandescent light bulb. My article and my other videos convey my position that our energy problems are not going to be solved with light bulb choice. Frankly, focusing on heating will make a far bigger difference. In fact, in households where people might think that lightbulb choice could save energy, I think that household could save far more by learning to turn off the lights and far more still by developing a better heating strategy. My article does a much better job of exploring incandescent vs. fluorescent. Maybe someday my drawing skills will evolve <b>...</b>

Smashed halogen light bulb still works

Don't try this at home! The new GE Edison and Sylvania Daylight Plus light bulbs look and act like ordinary incandescent bulbs, but actually contain a halogen capsule inside -- so they will still work even if the outer glass shell is broken, as I rather dangerously prove in this video. The Sylvania in particular uses an extremely thick outer glass shell which is very difficult to break. By the way, I highly recommend these bulbs. They are brighter than ordinary incandescent bulbs and last three times as long, without any of the disadvantages of compact fluorescent bulbs (slow turn-on and warm-up, radio interference, greenish tint, dangerous mercury contamination when broken, etc.).

Pyramids of Waste - The Light Bulb Conspiracy

Pyramids of Waste (2010) also known as "The lightbulb conspiracy" is a documentary about the negative effects of consumerism and planned obsolescence. The light bulb conspiracy is a theory that the leading manufacturers of incandescent light bulbs have conspired to keep the lifetime of their bulbs far below their real technological capabilities. This way, they ensure the continuous demand for more bulbs and hence, long-term profit for themselves.

Producing X-rays from a Cheap Light Bulb!

Yes, your typical incandescent nite-light bulb can function as an X-ray tube if you put a high enough voltage up to it! This is a crude demonstration of how to use it as such. I got these bulbs from a special lighting store in the area for around 25 cents each (but are sold for a bit more money pretty much anyplace that sells light bulbs), although the high-voltage oudin/tesla coil device I use costs considerably more. I'm running it at it's maximum 50000 V in the demonstration. The metal box protects the Gamma Scout from the EMF fields that would otherwise cause it to go haywire, but it also filters out a large percentage of the bulb's emissions. Trying to measure the true strength of an X-ray device is difficult without film, which I don't have at my disposal right now! Remember, X-rays are dangerous!! Soft X-rays can cause radiation burns simular to Ultraviolet sunburns, except several layers into the skin deeper than UV can, while hard X-rays can penetrate through to your organs just like Gamma Radiation can!

Lowe's & GE Approach Energy Saving Light Bulb Legislation

www.Lowes.com Did you know that if every home in the country replaced a 100 watt light bulb with a CFL, we would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year? America is making extra steps to save billions of dollars, protect the environment and reduce energy consumption with light bulb legislation. Legislation has been passed for 2012 to reduce energy wasting incandescent light bulbs for more energy efficient bulbs like CFL and halogen. From 2012 to 2014, 40 to 100 watt light bulbs will need to use 30 percent less energy than the incandescent bulbs use today. So, in 2012, 100 watt bulbs will no longer by manufactured. In 2013, 75 watt light bulbs will be phased out and so on. Now, you might ask what bulbs you should look for instead... GE has several different types of energy efficient light bulbs that you can use to help reduce energy consumption in your home. GE halogens are soft white bulbs that are perfect for designers. GE Energy Smart CFLs come in many shapes and sizes. They are also dimmable and come in multiple color temps. GE also provides energy saving LEDs. One thing to note is that lower wattage doesn't necessarily mean less light. Look at lumens instead of wattage. Lumens = Light Output Wattage = Energy Here's to a bright future. LED Light Bulb Review

www.homeimprovementsdepot.com A live LED light bulb demo and review. This is not a Phillips LED bulb as I mention in the video. It's actually a Leit Electric Utilitech LED bulb. LED light bulbs are coming down in price (from $50 to $20 or less) so I picked up one from my local Lowe's and figured I'd give it a try. Overall, it looks great compared to the CFL bulbs I was using. LED light bulbs don't get hot, use even less energy than most CFL light bulbs and have a warmer look to them which makes them much more like incandescent bulbs. The best feature is that you can usually use LED light bulbs with a dimmer. Dimming them does make them look a little more grey in color, but it's still a far cry better than the CFL light bulbs that dim. Check out my review to learn more!
