Royal Naval field Gun Competition 1999 ( NOT the "last")

The "last" Royal Naval Field gun race, FAA versus Portsmouth. Note the black armbands. 108 years have passed, and Ladysmith belongs to the Zulu Kingdom of KwaZulu-Natal. But the feat of the gunners from "Powerful" and "Terrible" has never been forgotten. ladysmith.kzn.org.za

Rory Gallagher- "Want Ad Blues" AKA "Wanted Blues"

Rory's version of John Lee Hooker's "Wanted Blues"... Rory Gallagher, sadly missed and winging his way through some amazing slide guitar. He's tuned DGDGBD ... in other words ( starting from conventional EADGBE tuning) the two outside E strings go down two frets to D . And the A string goes down two frets to become a G. Incidentally this is also the tuning used extensively by Keef so now you can play "Brown Sugar" too! Thank you Rory
Joe Ely- David Grissom versus Wilko Johnson ( UK session)

Okay, just picture it. You're a highly respected Texan guitarist, touring the UK and Europe with a new perm and a couple of PRS promotional guitars... but THEN you are joined onstage by the unlikely figure of hideous, uncouth, horrid, sweaty, ungainly Wilco Johnson- who is being a naughty boy as usual.... Maybe if you ignore him, he'll go away? ...... A classic clip, and an interesting clash of cultures. Some killer sustain from mister Grissom.

Joe Ely & David Grissom- "Are you listenin' Lucky"

UK gig. Ely performs "Me and Billy the Kid" as a solo number before being joined onstage by Texas Gunslinger Grissom and the rest of the gang to perform "Are you Listening Lucky". We tend to think as Grissom as some kind of quiet guy but in this clip his "stage presence" is huge. If this doesn't make you want a PRS nothing will....

Wilko Johnson- She does it right

During a 1980's session featuring American performer Joe Ely. Wilko brings beastly bassist Norman Watt Roy onto the stage for a solo spot and performs "She does it right". Despite all the gymnastics he turns in a "note perfect" performance, no mean feat. I have been listening to this gentleman for over 35 years and still find it amazing that he can sound like TWO guitars. the drummer is Salvatore "Doc PC" Ramundo, an italian drummer. Thanks to SMGalder78 for this info.

Bad Boy Bubby- some good bits

To be honest, MePOPnow has beaten me to it with a lot of this stuff. But I've made up a short sequence of my own personal favourite bits. Bubby's cellmate does seem somewhat lacking in interpersonal skills.... Also a nice glimpse of a police Honda transalp, if anyone's interested.
Will Hay - "Windbag The Sailor" 1936

Will Hay stars as the appalling "Captain Cutlet" who tells tall stories as a way of getting free booze. His cover is blown and - as an unwitting part of an insurance scam- he finds himself captain of a cargo vessel...with predictable results.... Hay's facial expressions are sublime. There is also a marvellously dangerous-looking stunt involving the collapse of a fake section of pier. The stunt man appears to put himself at considerable risk- and was probably paid about 10 shillings and sixpence for his efforts....
Bad Boy Bubby- humanistic monologue in Power Station

One of my all- time favourite movies, starring Nicholas Hope. There are many, many shocking aspects to this film. One of the more bizarre moments occurs when "some old English guy" ( for reasons unclear) takes our boy Bubby into to the turbine hall of an Electric Power Station and delivers this amazing soliloquy on the concept of "GOD";....-it is a powerful argument in favour of atheism, in my view.
Joe Ely & David Grissom - "Behind the Bamboo Shade"

I uploaded a clip of David Grissom some time ago and it got a lot of hit's so here's some more. Younger viewers may find these hairstyles disturbing. In fact this hairstyle was fairly common in the 1980's. It was known as the "Mullet" , or the "Camino Headrest".
Will Hay- "Ghost of St Michaels"- Highland hospitality

Willie Lamb encounters some Highland Hospitality when he arrives at Dunbain Castle. The horrid caretaker is played by John Laurie. 1941.If you like this sort of thing, you may wish to visit the "Falls of Lora" Hotel,Connel, near Oban where a similar welcome awaits you.

Will Hay- "Oh Mister Porter"- bus to Buggleskelly

Willie's nightmarish bus journey to Buggleskelly, including his first meeting with the annoying village postman ( played by Dave O'Toole) . 1937
Will Hay- "The Big Blockade" 1943

Will Hay does his bit for the war effort by appearing as the captain of a minesweeper in this "mockumentary" from the darkest days of WWII. Our hero manages to give a surprisingly long-winded and detailed description of the various bureaucratic and administrative procedures surrounding the use of "NAVICERTS"....whilst casually shooting down a heinkel bomber at the same time....

Annoying Bran Flakes advert from the 1980's - something of an irritating classic.
Alberta Hunter at age 39- "Black Shadows"

From the British film "Radio Parade of 1935". Alberta is accompanied by Joyce Richardson. Ms. Richardson's "booty shaking" is surprisingly demure by modern standards. Apologies for quality.... and please remember Martin Luther King would only have been 6 years old when this was recorded......

Ilyushin IL-18 Aborted take off

An Ilyushin IL-18 Coot ( Alada D2-FFR) Operated by DHL aborts takeoff from the 8202 ft long airstrip at Cabinda, West Africa. The pilot has done an excellent job; - there's a busy public road beyond the boundary fence, less than 50 metres from the end of the runway. Please don't ask me why he aborted; Sorry, I simply don't know. I have been advised that in point of fact this is a (former) IL-22 airborne command post stripped of mission equipment - note the fin tip pod which regular IL-18s do not have. Thanks to MrZlodeus for this info This old coot remained in service; spotted at Luanda on 13th July 2009

Joe Ely - "Oh Boy"

Irish TV session, 1980's. It's Joe Ely , accompanied by the magnificent David Grissom on Lead guitar. Ely announces he will recreate a Texas Honkytonk atmosphere by assembling a "gee-tar army" onstage. Included in this unlikely shennanigan are Irish musicians Phillip Donnelly (In top form and REALLY rippin' it up) and Conor Brady, later to be associated with the Corrs. Young Master Brady gives a good account of himself and treats us to a wild Celtic dance. Either that or he keeps tripping over his own shoe laces.... Finally, the delightfully sexy Rosie Flores gets a guitar break. Interesting piece of guitar history. Apologies for quality, which is not helped by the over-use of red and blue spotlights. www.dublinrecords.ie

Rory Gallagher 1987- "Messin with the kid"

I can't think of anything to say about this clip. But would you just listen to the TONE of that feckin guitar. And let's all celebrate the life of Rory Gallagher. Incidentally if you are interested in the technicalities of Rory's gear, you might find this link to be of interest..... www.flynnamps.co.uk
The Hallam Hawaiian Players

A 1930's British music hall act, led by David Hallam on slide guitar. No pickups, no amplifiers. And a nice bit of leg on show. He's tuned AC# EAC# E with heavy gauge strings and no capo. The tension on the neck must have been considerable? The solo slide "intro" is strangely reminiscent of the old hymn "How Great Thou Art"......

The magnificent Bon Scott memorial in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland. ( His actual birthplace was in nearby Forfar Hospital).Worldwide fans of AC/DC will be gratified to learn that Angus Council acknowledged the great man's contribution to Rock'n'roll in 2006, ( 26 years after his untimely death) and unveiled this richly engraved paving slab.
Kintueni Tunga Nzola- Fua Batonda ( Kintueni)

Cabinda truly is the "booty shaking" capital of the world! Tunga Nzola represent all that is new and exciting about Cabinda and their music should be more widely known. They recently performed for his Holiness Pope Benedict in Luanda. His Holiness nearly fell out of his chair with excitement!
