This is the recap of qualifications for the 1973 Indianapolis 500. Credits go to SPEED and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As you can see, the host segments for this episode of "Indy 500: The Classics" episode dealing with the 1973 race have been kept. In qualifications, Johnny Rutherford, who nearly won the pole in 1970, nearly became the first man to eclipse 200 MPH at Indy, turning a fast lap of 45.21 seconds, good for a lap speed of 199.071 MPH on his third qualifying lap. Ironically, Swede Savage's qualifying run, which had set a new qualifying record earlier on pole day and earned him the fourth starting position, is not shown on the speedway's official film of the race, the only driver that started on the first three rows not to at least be mentioned in the qualification segnment on the official film. This segmenat also focuses on the problems that two-time defending USAC champion Joe Leonard had in qualifying for the race, though he did make it. The same was true of the legendary AJ Foyt. Never before was he in so much danger of missing the race, though he also made it. By the way, the fatal crash of Art Pollard is not shown, as the coverage starts at the beginning of qualifications. Pollar's fatal crash, which was a precursor to events that happened in the race itself, occurred prior to qualifying. Again <b>...</b>
