Francis Vallejo - Ink Techniques
Illustrator Francis Vallejo takes the viewer on a journey into inks and their exciting possibilities in this 102 minute video. You will be able to watch Francis use one reference photo and interpret it 3 times, each time using a different inking technique: nib, brush, and wash. He discusses the positives & negatives of each tool and ultimately the benefit of using all three for a successful inked image. Grinding Sumi Ink
Today, there are many bottled "sumi" inks on the market. The problem is that they are filled with chemicals and preservatives. These cause a fine brush to deteriorate quickly if the brush is not properly washed after use. Traditional sumi ink is worth the time to grind, and the deep black found in bottle ink is readily achieved with patience. The result is far more satisfying, too, as the subtleties of hand-ground ink exceed any found in pre-mixed. Shades of grey are made by diluting the black ink in separate sauces, or in a large one. Also, as the water evaporates from the black ink, it can become darker and darker. Never, ever leave ink in your suzuri once you have finished painting for the day. The dry ink adheres to the stone, and is difficult to remove. If you do this, soak the stone in water, and then polish it out with 800 grit - 1500 grit wet-dry paper from 3M.

Alcohol Ink Floating Background Tutorial
How about using your Alcohol inks on POROUS surfaces... yes, you read right.. not glossy card, not acetate, not metal, not glass.. but plain cardstock or card.... Imagine the possibilities. Alcohol Ink Brights work really well if you want more vivid colours, also be liberal with the colours for brighter results and allow to dry naturally rather than using a heat tool.

There's a couple different ways you can use it, which I'd like to explain real quick. If I'm using every bottle in the set, I'll use medium sized plastic ink cups. I'll set up 8 cups total - 7 medium sized cups, and 1 small #9 cup for the white. I'll line up 6 cups together, and put 1 cup a little away from the other 6 cups. The cup that's moved away is for Dimension Black. The next cup is for Sculpting Black, followed by Dark Tone, Medium Tone, Light Tone, and 2 cups of straight distilled water. The small cup for White I put behind the black set-up. Confused yet? Haha! I only use the Dimension Black for any solid black that I'm doing in the tattoo, whether it be a portrait, custom demon or whatever. When I want to blend into some shade of gray from the solid black, I switch to Sculpting Black <b>...</b>
