A pod of 5 or 6 Atlantic White Sided Dolphins have moved into the inner harbour and estuary of Pugwash, Nova Scotia. They come in on the incoming tide, and wreak havoc with the schooling fish that are there - either herring, mackerel or smelt, depending on who you talk to. These animals don't routinely hang out here and it has caused quite a stir in our little community of 800 people. Traffic has been stopping and parking on the bridge to watch. The dolphins really put on a show as they corrall the fish, and then with a whip of their tails, they accelerate into the schools of fish, and they chow down. The seagull population have learned that this is a good thing too. The explosive power of these dolphins is apparent by their wake and the waves they create. They're about 200-230 kg when fully grown!
