This is a video showing how to replace an inner tie rod on a rack and pinion equipped vehicle. This on is a 1997 Ford Explorer 2 wheel drive. I made a brief reference to a zip tie on the video & didn't explain myself. I used a zip tie in place of the inner bellows boot clamp on the rack.

Special tool for removing and mounting ball joints on inner tie rods. The tool can be used universal for round, hexagon, octagon joints. Thanks to a patented mechanism, the tool works at diameters from 35- 45mm, without changing sockets or roll inlets. Due to the slim head it is also possible to work in narrow spaces. I replace a inner tie rod end on the front passenger side of my 1995 Subaru Legacy station wagon. The bellows boot that covers of the inner ball joint on it went bad. When that happened all of the grease oozed or dried out causing the ball joint to fail. I figured I had better change it out because that is something that you don't want to have falling apart when you are driving down the interstate. I used my special tied rod end puller to get the outer end off. I think you can buy them at O'reilly's, Auto Zone or Advance Auto for about 15 dollars. I have a pickle fork too but I don't like to use that because it damages the rubber boot that covers up the ball joint. However one time on my Honda I had to use my pickle fork, and I had to heat it up with a torch too. Those really rust in there sometimes and can be nearly impossible if you don't have the right tools. To get the inner end off I used a loaner tool that I got from O'reilly Auto Parts. I had to buy it up front for about 65 dollars but I will get my money back when I return it. The tool's special sockets appear to be english while my tie rod end must have been metric since it's a Japanese car. The socket did not fit well at all but I got lucky and it came off. If I do another one I will see if I can find one of those special tools that has metric sockets.

Finally I got and in-car view of the inner tire rod joint moving. Just the visual condition was enough to know it's bad, but you can see the ball in the joint fail the shake test. www.ifitjams.com

I changed the inner tie rod on my 2001 Chev Tahoe and described a method to make sure that alignment was maintained. I have heard of people using string pulled tight from front wheels to rear wheels and that would also be a great check to make sure the thing is aligned correctly. If I get a chance I may check my truck using that method but for now I simply painted the tires.... See my video Poor Mans Alignment Technique Part 2 for more on that technique.

After replacing inner tie rod bushings and outer tie rods, and torquing everything to spec. This is the sound I hear when moving the steering wheel from side to side vigorously. After an inspection by a mechanic he confirms that the steering is normal and all rack and pinion exhibit some noise when shaken like this. Under normal driving condition and from inside the cabin the clicking is barely audible. The noise does not appear to come from the bolts or the bushings, but rather from the center inside the steering rack.

To test for loose tie rods it is best to keep the wheel on the vehicle. We removed for video recording only. To test for tie rod play hold the wheel at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions and wiggle or shake the wheel back and forth you will find and feel any play in the wheel. Also will feel inner tie rod play too. Will need to verify which has the movement. Can be very slight. Avery quick video from my cell phone.
