Skinput: Appropriating the Body as an Input Surface (CHI 2010)
www.chrisharrison.net We present Skinput, a technology that appropriates the human body for acoustic transmission, allowing the skin to be used as a finger input surface. In particular, we resolve the location of finger taps on the arm and hand by analyzing mechanical vibrations that propagate through the body. We collect these signals using a novel array of sensors worn as an armband. This approach provides an always-available, naturally-portable, and on-body interactive surface. To illustrate the potential of our approach, we developed several proof-of-concept applications on top of our sensing and classification system. Published at ACM CHI 2010. More info: chrisharrison.net Scratch Input: Creating Large, Inexpensive, Unpowered and Mobile Finger Input Surfaces We present Scratch Input, an acoustic-based input technique that relies on the unique sound produced when a fingernail is dragged over the surface of a textured material, such as wood, fabric, or wall paint. We employ a simple sensor that can be easily coupled with existing surfaces, such as walls and tables, turning them into large, unpowered and ad hoc finger input surfaces. Our sensor is sufficiently small that it could be incorporated into a mobile device, allowing any suitable surface on which it rests to be appropriated as a gestural input surface. Several example applications were developed to demonstrate possible interactions. We conclude with a study that shows users can perform six Scratch Input gestures at about 90% accuracy with less than five minutes of training and on wide variety of surfaces.

In this tutorial, we examine one way to receive and play with data given to us from the user rather than data we explicitly include ourselves. I apologize for the lack of music in this and subsequent tutorials; while Beethoven's almost always a good listen, adding sound to the video was drastically reducing its quality. Hey, if you feel the music helped, why not throw it on while you read? There are a few grammatical mistakes, as well as my first typing mistake (bummer...), and for these I apologize. Somewhere in there, you'll notice that JavaScript isn't the greatest handler of multiplication problems, but no worries, I'll explain why this is as well as how to alleviate the problem in a future tutorial.

What Are Input and Output? --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Input & Output, or Ins and Outs, is a small yet vital section of the mix window. The Ins and Outs determine the audio that goes into and comes out of your tracks in Pro Tools. There are a couple of different ways of viewing the section, along with other things you can do. When you're recording, you're going to need an Input. An Input is simply a signal going into the computer that refers to the electrical representation of a sound. On your interface that's connected to Pro Tools, make sure you have the same correct Input. For instance, if you have your guitar plugged in to Input 1 out of 8 on your Interface, then make sure you have IN 1 selected in the Pro Tools mix window. * Troubleshooting tip: If you have your instrument plugged in to your interface and you aren't getting a signal in Pro Tools, check that you have the same correct Input selected in the mix window. The Output determines where the audio signal is sent. When you set a track to Output to, say, Bus 9-10, then you have to make sure that your master fader for that same track is set to Input Bus 9-10. Manual Deskterity: An Exploration of Simultaneous Pen + Touch Direct Input
Manual Deskterity is a prototype digital drafting table that supports both pen and touch input. We explore a division of labor between pen and touch that flows from natural human skill and differentiation of roles of the hands. We also explore the simultaneous use of pen and touch to support novel compound gestures. We advocate a division of labor between pen and touch: the pen writes, touch manipulates, and the combination of pen+touch yields new tools. This articulates how our system interprets unimodal pen, unimodal touch, and multimodal pen + touch inputs, respectively. We contribute novel pen + touch gestures that leverage the strengths of both pen and touch; utilizing both modalities to complement one another also enables us to largely sidestep the weaknesses inherent in each modality as well.

The previous generation AC15 was already a fairly versatile amp for being a one-channel design, but the new Vox AC15C1 allows for even more variations on the classic Vox clean chime and brit-rock distortion. By adding a secondary input and a master Tone Cut control, the AC15C1 becomes, in essence, a two-channel amplifier with master EQ. Sure, you'll need an external A/B switch to make use of the dual channels in a live context, but that doesn't take away from this amp's impressive tonal range and overall sound. And you still get footswitchable reverb and tremolo. And it looks handsome. And it's still relatively affordable. We'll stop there; you've got a video to watch.

Two Giant Sequoia trees that fell in September at the Trail of 100 Giants grove. The public was invited to view the trees on October 22, 2011 and provide input regarding the future of the trail the trees fell onto. The two trees had grown together at the base, and the tree diameter was approximately 17 feet, with a height of 300 feet. The trees in this grove are approximately 1500 years old. A handful of visitors to the park actually witnessed the trees falling, and some tourists from Germany were able to shoot a few seconds of video as the trees fell, which can also be found on Youtube.

Step 1: -update skyrim to version 1.1 (fixes mouse sensitivity issues in the menus) Step 2: -if you are not playing on gamepad, go to skyrim "gameplay" options and disable "360" (removes a lot of input lag) Step 3: -go to your video driver control panel and set "frames rendered ahead" to "1" (removes a lot of input lag) Step 4: -go to "Skyrim/skyrim/skyrimprefs.ini" and set "bMouseAcceleration" to "0" (disables sluggish skyrim mouse acceleration) Step 5: -go to "my documents/my games/skyrim/skyrim.ini" and add "iPresentInterval=0" to the [display] section (disables vsync, very important for all following tweaks) Step 6: -download "D3D_Antilag_v1.1" (www.skyrimnexus.com and move "D3D9.dll" and "antilag.cfg" into the game folder (where the *.exe files are located) -open antilag.cfg with notepad and set "frames rendered ahead" to "1" (This forces frames rendered ahead to 1 and adds a framelimiter, which is required to fix vertical sensitivity issues) Step 7: -open antilag.cfg with notepad and change "FPSlimit" to "50" Step 8: -go to "my documents/my games/skyrim/skyrim.ini" and add: [Controls] fMouseHeadingYScale=0.0132 fMouseHeadingXScale=0.0200 (this syncs vertical and horizontal sensitivity for the FPS limit we have just set) Step 9: -change your skyrim video settings so that performance never drops below 40 fps (vertical sensitivity depends on it!)
