Beyond: Collapsible Input Device for Direct 3D Manipulation beyond the Screen

What would it be like to reach into a screen and manipulate virtual objects as in real world. We present Beyond, a novel collapsible input device for direct 3D manipulation. When pressed against a screen, Beyond collapses in the physical world and extends into the digital space of the screen, such that users can have an illusion that they are inserting the tool into the virtual space. Beyond allows users to directly interact with 3D media, avoiding inconsistencies of input and output without having to wear special glasses. Users can select, draw, and sculpt in 3D virtual space and seam- lessly transition between 2D and 3D manipulation. We de- scribe detailed interaction techniques, implementation and application scenarios focused on geometric design and pro- totyping.

Hard disk rotary input device - part 2

This was a new implementation of the hard disk rotary input project I tried last year, the old one never worked correctly (think the opamp was fried) and I tried some variations on the schematic and user suggestions given on the Instructable www.instructables.com As I mention, the LM324 called for in the Instructable didn't quite work for me as I would have liked - I want to use this with an AVR or Arduino on the digital input pins and thus the signal should really be +5V when high; the '324 only put out ~3V. The 339 comparator did a much better job and I decided to use that. Still have to implement the AVR code but this should be straightforward. As for the circuit, the schematic I followed was similar to the one in the Instructable however I removed the 1k series resistors to the non-inverting inputs of the '324 and replaced the 10k feedback with 1M's. The outputs of the LM324 were fed to the LEDs with a series current-limiting resistor. The 339 was similar except it had a 10k pull-up resistor tied to the output. Both were running off of single-sided +5V supply and the inverting inputs were tied to ground along with the common pin of the stepper spindle motor. Hope to have an update shortly with a sample Arduino implementation!

Here I demonstrate my setup at home; I use the laser pointer to control a presentation and browse the web. A Gaming Glove That's Fast Enough for Pros

Engineers have always tried to come up with better controllers and input devices for video games, but many PC gamers still use their keyboards. Gaming gloves have always seemed like a good idea in theory, but in practice they could never compete. But now there's the Peregrine glove, which uses simple conductive strips to replace numerous hotkey commands with simple hand gestures.

New Input Interface by Tokyo University

As you can see in Nintend Wii and iPods, more devices are adopting intuitive interfaces like touchpanels and motion capturing today. These devices make it much easier for people to use otherwise complex devices. A device developed by Tokyo University team seems to go a step ahead of existing devices. It can translate in-air movements of fingers to computer command, which enables you to use portable devices without even a touch. More information can be found in this blog post: en.gigazine.net

Scratch Input (Chris Harrison, Scott Hudson) - UIST '08

More info: chrisharrison.net Scratch Input: Creating Large, Inexpensive, Unpowered and Mobile Finger Input Surfaces We present Scratch Input, an acoustic-based input technique that relies on the unique sound produced when a fingernail is dragged over the surface of a textured material, such as wood, fabric, or wall paint. We employ a simple sensor that can be easily coupled with existing surfaces, such as walls and tables, turning them into large, unpowered and ad hoc finger input surfaces. Our sensor is sufficiently small that it could be incorporated into a mobile device, allowing any suitable surface on which it rests to be appropriated as a gestural input surface. Several example applications were developed to demonstrate possible interactions. We conclude with a study that shows users can perform six Scratch Input gestures at about 90% accuracy with less than five minutes of training and on wide variety of surfaces.

EventGhost Tutorial - How to configure this automation tool

In this video a demonstrate how to setup EventGhost from scratch. I use WinLIRC to process the signal from my IR receiver connected to the Serial Port. Eventghost is an open source automation software for Windows, that can be extended through plugins. It can use different input devices like infrared or wireless remote controls to trigger macros, that on their part control a computer and its attached hardware. So it can be used to control a HTPC/Media-PC with a normal consumer remote. But its possible uses go much beyond this. EventGhost monitors everything that happens in your computer. Opening applications, changing focus from one app to another, pressing keys, pressing remote buttons, and so on and so forth. All this constitutes events and EventGhost can associate actions to execute to each and every event happening in your machine. It's a really powerful tool and this tutorial will barely scratch the surface of what it's capable of. Those interested in more information would do well by heading to its homepage. www.eventghost.org Supports Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7. To make EventGhost to display the current volume (OSD), you will need some codes that are on this thread: www.eventghost.org

Surface Computing with ZOIL and Squidy

This video shows how our workgroups software frameworks "ZOIL UI framework" and "Squidy Interaction" Library can be used for designing multi-modal, multi-display and multi-touch work environments (in this case demonstrated within our Media Room at the University of Konstanz). Squidy integrates different input modalities (ranging from multi-touch input to laser pointer-, eye- or gesture-tracking) into an input abstraction layer, on which ready-to-use signal processing filters and data pipes can be visually composed and iteratively improved by the interaction designer or application developer. This Squidy layer is then accessed by the application to receive the desired low- or high-level multi-modal input events. Squidy also contains a proof-of-concept for a converter of Surface SDK events to TUIO and vice versa enabling designers to integrate the MS Surface table seamlessly into new and existing work environments. The ZOIL UI Framework supports interaction designers to build feature-rich zoomable user interfaces as shared visual workplaces following the ZOIL (Zoomable Object-oriented Information Landscape) paradigm. The ZOIL framework facilitates the construction of a large visual and zoomable workspace as application user interface. This UI can be shared across display and device boundaries and presents all content and functionality in an object-oriented manner using semantic zooming. Skinput: Appropriating the Body as an Input Surface (CHI 2010)

www.chrisharrison.net We present Skinput, a technology that appropriates the human body for acoustic transmission, allowing the skin to be used as a finger input surface. In particular, we resolve the location of finger taps on the arm and hand by analyzing mechanical vibrations that propagate through the body. We collect these signals using a novel array of sensors worn as an armband. This approach provides an always-available, naturally-portable, and on-body interactive surface. To illustrate the potential of our approach, we developed several proof-of-concept applications on top of our sensing and classification system. Published at ACM CHI 2010. Toshiba flexes its paper-thin LCD muscle

Toshiba's found an interesting use for flexible LCD technology: user input. At SID 2010, the Japanese display manufacturer showed off an 8.4-inch wide, 0.1mm thick SVGA panel that could be grabbed and physically bent to zoom in or out using Google Earth. While it's a far cry from 6DOF and perhaps not as entertaining as controlling the time-space continuum with forefinger and thumb, the bend sensor seems like an obvious addition to the gamut of crisp, rollable, data storing, energy generating flexible tech already in development. It's also worth noting that Toshiba isn't the only one working on the idea; IBM filed a patent application for "flexible displays as an input device" back in 2006. Video after the break.

The 8pen

The new 8pen is out! goo.gl And there's a game too: goo.gl New videos: youtu.be youtu.be The 8pen allows for the replacement of the conventional keyboard on all devices capable of detecting gestures, in particular mobile phones with touch screens, modern remote controls or game controllers. Its advantage lies mainly in the fact that it is possible to input text faster than using conventional layouts on small devices, while at the same time mimicking human hand-writing. Moreover, the simplicity of the gestures involved greatly reduces the problem of mistyping that frequently occurs with the classical layout due to the lack of space. For the same reason, it is possible to write without viewing, as only the central region is needed as a reference for starting and ending a movement. Learn more at: www.8pen.com
