'Gaddafi murder - international crime'

There's growing international pressure for an investigation into exactly how Libya's ousted dictator Moammar Gaddafi died. The UN expressed concern over video footage taken following his capture which shows Gaddafi taken alive, before he was killed. Meanwhile, NATO said it's winding down its bombing campaign in the country. London-based journalist and author Afshin Rattansi says that killing Colonel Gaddafi is an international crime. 'Iran never gives in to pressure'

Iran's resistance to Western influence is the only reason NATO has not encircled Russia completely, thus enabling the US to defeat its only military rival, consolidating its dominance in the world, says Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi. RT: The West is suspicious of Iran's nuclear program, while you insist that you have peaceful intentions. What is Iran going to do to convince the West that your nuclear program is intended to serve peaceful purposes? Ali Akbar Salehi: The only international body that has the authority to evaluate our activities is the IAEA, and no state is allowed to accuse Iran regarding its nuclear program outside IAEA boundaries, or to initiate any international action against Iran. This is why we pay no attention to the West's claims regarding our nuclear research. Iran is a member of the IAEA and a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran is going to respect that treaty, since nuclear non-proliferation is in our interests as well. I confirm that Iran has made its intentions quite clear with regard to its nuclear program, proving that it is peaceful. This is further reaffirmed by the fact that the IAEA did not state in any of its reports that there is any military activity going on in Iran's nuclear sector. As for our intentions, how can the United States accuse us of pursuing non-peaceful purposes while America itself was the first nation ever to use nuclear weapons, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Japan? This is why ...

Seymour Hersh: Propaganda Used Ahead of Iraq War Now Being Reused Over Iran's Nuke Program

www.democracynow.org - While the United States, Britain and Canada are planning to announce a coordinated set of sanctions against Iran's oil and petrochemical industry today, longtime investigative journalist Seymour Hersh questions the growing consensus on Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program. International pressure has been mounting on Iran since the UN International Atomic Energy Agency revealed in a report the "possible military dimensions" to Iran's nuclear activities, citing "credible" evidence that "indicates that Iran has carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device." In his latest article for The New Yorker blog, titled "Iran and the IAEA," Hersh argues the recent report is a "political document," not a scientific study, in an interview with Democracy Now! Nov. 21. "They [JSOC] found nothing. Nothing. No evidence of any weaponization," Hersh says. "In other words, no evidence of a facility to build the bomb. They have facilities to enrich, but not separate facilities to build a bomb. This is simply a fact." Exclusive: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Tawakkul Karman on the Struggle for Democracy in Yemen

www.DemocracyNow.org - In a Democracy Now! exclusive interview, we speak to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Yemeni activist, Tawakkul Karman. The UN Security Council is set to vote on a resolution calling on Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to immediately step down after 33 years in power. All five permanent members of the Security Council back the measure, which "strongly condemns" government violence against demonstrators. The popular uprising Yemen continues despite more attacks by government forces, including dozens of demonstrators murdered by snipers in recent days. Karman has been in New York City all week to press for international pressure on the Saleh regime. She is the first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. A 32-year-old mother of three, an outspoken journalist and Yemeni activist, Karman has agitated for press freedoms and staged weekly sit-ins to demand the release of political prisoners from jail. She founded Women Journalists Without Chains and has played a leading part in the struggle for women's rights and for democracy in Yemen. Most recently, she has led rallies in the continuing protests against the rule of Saleh. "We have the dream, and we have the ability...we will not stop here, we will build our country," Karman said. "We tell Saudi that they should stand with the Yemeni people. And anyone who doesn't stand with our people, they are the losers. We know what it means to be free, and we will achieve it." Alex de Waal: Obstacles to Peace in Darfur

Alex de Waal, advisor to the African Union at the Darfur peace talks in Abuja, discusses some of the necessary conditions for peace in Darfur and the major obstacles standing in the way. He argues that Darfur is a sideshow for the Government of Sudan (to the issues of national identity and national democratization), made important only because of international pressure. Moreover, political disunity amongst the rebel factions and dedicated, organized interests in Khartoum and neighboring regimes make real peace elusive. He argues for broader representation at future peace talks and for international activists for human rights and democracy to support the effort of Darfurians in Darfur who are struggling for change. Author Bio: Alex de Waal is a program director at the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), engaged in projects on HIV/AIDS and Social Transformation and on Emergencies and Humanitarian Action. He is also a fellow of the Global Equity Initiative at Harvard, which is a partner in a consortium with the SSRC working on AIDS and governance issues, and he is director of Justice Africa, London. In his twenty-year career, de Waal has studied the social, political and health dimensions of famine, war, genocide and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, especially in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes. CRISTIANO RONALDO ENGLISH INTERVIEW TO CNN INTERNATIONAL(24/02/2010)

London, England (CNN) -- The pressure of playing for Real Madrid is greater than playing for Manchester United but Cristiano Ronaldo says he has settled into life at his new club. The Portuguese forward's first season in Spain since his world record $130-million move from England has been disrupted by injury. But Ronaldo has thrived on the pitch, scoring 20 goals in 19 appearances. "It's always complicated when you come from a different league, different football, but I feel very comfortable. The team play nice and they help me a lot," Ronaldo told CNN. But the 25-year-old, a former world and European footballer of the year, admitted that the pressure of being a Real Madrid player was more intense than anything he had experienced at Old Trafford. "Here in Spain, the club have more pressure," he said. "There are many people, more journalists, a lot of pressure." "But it's not a problem. I played six years for Manchester and you have to be calm all the time, you have to do what you do, to work and to train hard. I don't care about the pressure. I've always played with pressure and for me it is another challenge." Portugal, who reached the semifinals of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, struggled to qualify for this year's finals in South Africa, beating Bosnia and Herzegovina in a playoff to book their place. Ronaldo failed to score in Portugal's qualifying campaign and he admitted it had been a difficult year for Portugal. But he said the team was stronger than its recent ...

These policies with strong Keynesian tendency remained in effect almost to the end of his tenure in office. Dr Mahathir is credited with spearheading the phenomenal growth of the Malaysian economy, now one of the largest in South East Asia. Growth between 1988 and 1997 averaged over ten percent and living standards rose twentyfold, with poverty relatively almost eradicated and social indicators such as literacy levels and infant mortality rates becoming almost on par with developed countries. Taiwan's critically endangered pink dolphins in 2010

The first scientific study of Taiwan's pink dolphins (Sousa chinensis), otherwise known as Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins or, locally, as "Matsu's Fish", was carried out in 2002. But FormosaCetus Research and Conservation Group have already shown that the population, which is resident in shallow waters along Taiwan's west coast, is tiny (less than 70), isolated and distinct from other pink dolphin populations in the region - and in serious trouble. In August 2008, the International Union for Conservation of Nature listed the population as Critically Endangered. In fact, all cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) are protected under Taiwanese law. But legal protection is meaningless without action, and this population will edge closer and closer towards extinction as long as Taiwan's government allows the degradation of the dolphins habitat to continue. (Tip: Go to Google Earth and zoom in on Taiwan's west coast to get an idea of the extent of artificial modification that has already occurred there.) The main threats to the dolphins are: 1.Loss of habitat (through land reclamation) 2.Water and air pollution (dolphins are air-breathing mammals) 3.Interactions with fishing gear (cetaceans can get entangled in fishing nets and drown or suffer injuries) 4.Underwater noise (dolphins depend on sound for survival) 5.Reduction of freshwater flow into the estuaries within their habitat (freshwater and sediment from rivers help to make estuaries some of the most productive ...

Video of Greece strike turning violent in Athens

Athens, Greece 23/2/2011 ATHENS, Greece -- Young demonstrators hurled rocks and fire bombs at riot police as clashes broke out Wednesday in Athens during a mass rally against austerity measures, part of a general strike that crippled services and public transportation around the country. Police fired tear gas and flash grenades at protesters, blanketing parts of the city center in choking smoke. Thousands of peaceful demonstrators ran to side streets to take cover. A police officer was attacked and his uniform caught fire in the city's main Syntagma Square, and his motorcycle was burned. At least two people were injured and another three arrested. One group of rioting youths smashed paving stones in front of the central Bank of Greece, but there were no immediate reports of any serious damage. More than 30000 protesters attended the Athens rally, which had been calm before the clashes. Protesters chanting "Don't obey the rich — Fight back!" marched to parliament as the city center was heavily policed. A brass band, tractors and cyclists joined the rally. The rally was part of Greece's first major labor protest this year as Prime Minister George Papandreou's Socialist government faces international pressure to make more lasting cuts after the nation's debt-crippled economy was rescued from bankruptcy by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. The 24-hour strike halted trains, ferries and most public transport across the country, and led to the cancellation ...

Awesome HMS Westminister at 12 miles off Myanmar's coast

19-05-08:Awesome HMS Westminister at 12 miles off Myanmar's coast . International flotilla awaits Myanmar go-ahead By ERIC TALMADGE, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 16 minutes ago BANGKOK, Thailand - Lt. Denver Applehans runs down the list of what's ready, almost within sight of Myanmar's cyclone-devastated shore. ADVERTISEMENT Four US ships laden with 14 helicopters, two landing-craft vessels, two high-tech amphibious hovercraft and about 1000 Marines — help that has been there for a week, prevented by the country's military junta from delivering aid. "We are currently not providing any aid from the ships," said Applehans, a public affairs officer aboard the USS Essex. A deal may be in the works, however, to allow the US flotilla — and French and British ships in the same situation — to finally join in the relief effort after Cyclone Nargis. Though extremely reluctant to allow foreign militaries into the devastated Irrawaddy delta, Myanmar's ruling junta appears to be weighing a proposal that would put Asian intermediaries in charge of ferrying aid from the ships to shore. The ships are capable of providing a huge boost to relief operations for the more than 2 million people believed to be in severe need of help. British Foreign Office Minister Lord Malloch-Brown said the military regime was considering the arrangement, and said he was guardedly optimistic. "I think if there were Asian partners able to transship into the delta area from ships, this may become an option ...

WikiLeaks - Israel Kept Gaza On Brink Of Economic Collapse

www.huffingtonpost.com uploaded from www.youtube.com JERUSALEM — Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip was meant to push the area's economy "to the brink of collapse," according to a US diplomatic cable released by Wikileaks on Wednesday, signaling that Israel was well aware that the policy was taking a heavy toll on the area's civilian population. Israeli leaders have long maintained that the blockade was necessary to weaken the ruling Hamas militant group. The newly released document, published in Norway's Aftenposten newspaper, indicates that Israel hoped to accomplish that goal by targeting Gaza's 1.5 million people. According to the March 3, 2008, cable written by an American official, Israeli officials told American diplomats "on multiple occasions that they intend to keep Gaza's economy on the brink of collapse without quite pushing it over the edge." Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev refused to comment. Israel imposed the blockade after Hamas militants routed forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and seized control of Gaza in June 2007. Its official policy was that it would never allow a humanitarian crisis to develop in Gaza. The blockade failed to oust Hamas, though it brought Gaza's economy to a virtual standstill. Tens of thousands of jobs have been lost, exports have been largely halted, and for three years, Israel carefully monitored which types of consumer goods were allowed into the territory, while allowing all basic humanitarian goods ...

Op Payback Hacks Post Finance Site. The international pressure on Julian Assange increased today after the banking arm of the Swiss post office announced that it had closed the WikiLeaks founder's account because he had given "false information". "PostFinance has ended its business relationship with ... Julian Paul Assange," the bank said in a statement. "The Australian citizen provided false information regarding his place of residence during the account opening process." It said that although Assange had given his residence as an undisclosed address in Geneva, he could offer no proof of being a Swiss resident. WikiLeaks had advertised the PostFinance account details online to "donate directly to the Julian Assange and other WikiLeaks Staff Defence Fund," giving an account name of "Assange Julian Paul, Geneve". A spokesman for the bank told the Associated Press the account was closed this afternoon, but added that there would be "no criminal consequences" for misleading authorities. "That's his money, he will get his money back," he said. "We just close the account and that's it." PostFinance is the latest institution to sever its ties with Assange and WikiLeaks. Last week, Amazon.com withdrew its hosting of WikiLeaks' cables site and the WikiLeaks.org domain was taken offline by Everydns.net. On Saturday, PayPal, which is owned by the auction website eBay, froze WikiLeaks' account, saying it was being used for "illegal" activity. It was also reported this afternoon that ...

Blood Diamonds: The True Story (part 1/4)

Full playlist: www.youtube.com Documentary series exploring infamous historical events. This installment examines the little-known truth about how the worldwide diamond trade has funded wars across western and central Africa, leading to the deaths of millions of people. Sierra Leone on Africa's west coast is one of the poorest nations on earth, with an average income of just 220 US dollars. Conversely, the country is rich in natural resources, with verdant tropical forests stretching for miles and a plentiful source of high-quality diamonds below ground. In some cases, diamond mines are used to cement the economy of a poor nation and drag the populace out of poverty, but in Sierra Leone they have brought only chaos and misery. Blood diamonds or 'conflict diamonds', explains Alexander Yearsley, senior campaigner for international pressure group Global Witness, "are diamonds mined and sold by rebel movements, particularly in Africa, that are used to finance arms purchases." Between 1991 and 2001 in Sierra Leone, a brutal civil war between government forces and a rebel group called the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) raged, with 75000 people being killed and two million being displaced. For many of the survivors, lasting reminders of the conflict exist in the form of deliberate amputations, which were to become a trademark atrocity of the RUF. "They committed every war crime in the Geneva Convention, then invented one of their own," explains Greg Campbell, author of the ...

Blood Diamonds: The True Story (part 2/4)

Full playlist: www.youtube.com Documentary series exploring infamous historical events. This installment examines the little-known truth about how the worldwide diamond trade has funded wars across western and central Africa, leading to the deaths of millions of people. Sierra Leone on Africa's west coast is one of the poorest nations on earth, with an average income of just 220 US dollars. Conversely, the country is rich in natural resources, with verdant tropical forests stretching for miles and a plentiful source of high-quality diamonds below ground. A Plea for Youcef Nadarkhani's Life!

****New Update! 11/18/2011**** The fate of Youcef Nadarkhani, the Iranian pastor sentenced to death for refusing to convert to Islam, now belongs to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This is due to the international pressure being put on the case from several countries including our own state department. Thank you to everyone who was putting pressure on the government, without your help he would likely already have been executed. ***UPDATE**** For those who think he's guilty of rape of extortion or zionism as the Iranian government falsely claims, heres a photocopy of the original written verdict. Judging by the pages of those that claim he's done these things, you won't need it translated. If Nadarkahani had been guilty of the crimes the government had said, they never would have asked for the Ayatollah to weigh in. c0391070.cdn2.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com But here's the translation just incase c0391070.cdn2.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com **************************************************** This is Youcef. He's not that different from you and I. He's a 34 years old man living in Iran. He loves his wife Fatemah, and his 2 children, 9 year old Daniel and 7 year old Yoel. He is a Christian man. He only wants to teach his children Christianity. But for this cause, he has been told "deny Christ or Die" . He awaits his death now. He is willing to give his life to stand for Christ. The Scripture says 1 Corinthians 12 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body ...

Toomas Hendrik Ilves 20.08.2008 at Night Song Festival (Öölaulupidu)

Estonia's President Toomas Hendrik Ilves' speech on 20. August 2008 at Night Song Festival. My translation: "Dear people here and in all Estonian homes. Look around! We are all here! All! 20 years ago Estonian nation upraised against fear and humiliation. Nation's desire for freedom became a song for hundreds of thousands of people. Our spirit became free. Back that had been crouching for half a century, now stood straight. Our songs and longing became activity towards freedom. We won and made Estonia a state again! Estonia knows how to win and our people know how to win. Let us be proud of that, like today we are proud of the world's best Gerd Kanter's Olympic Gold! That's simply awesome. Just like you. This night's song festival is called 'Time Of Noticing' and we all are asked when was the last time we noticed that Estonia is free. This question would have hit the nailhead two weeks ago. Because a lot of us had started to take many things - our state, our freedom, our rights - for granted. But now, after 10 days of appalling news from Georgia we understand that freedom can not be taken for granted. Freedom is not a simple word or declaration you can laugh at. Freedom needs to be cherished and protected every day. Freedom expects us to notice what is happening in the world. It expects us to see us as a part of this complicated and changing world. Which means we have to take care of what is important and not let us be distracted by the unimportant. To keep the freedom ...

Spacewalkers Provide Cool Under Pressure on This Week @ NASA

The third of three spacewalks by Expedition 24 Flight Engineers Doug Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson restored a pressurized cooling loop aboard the International Space Station. The duo removed and replaced a failed ammonia pump that brought down one of the station's two cooling loops July 31. Also, NASA hosted some 1000 participants at its first Information Technology Summit held outside Washington; a closeout of open-door tests aboard SOFIA; the nation's top teachers are schooled on space; NASA Exploration Day at Busch Gardens; and a Gemini program mission marks its 45th anniversary.
