Abstract: The limited supply and worldwide environmental effects of carbon-based fuels demand that a different source of energy be identified and tapped. This analysis applies to synthetic bio fuels as well as fossil fuels. The obvious candidates to supplant carbon-based fuels are solar conversion, wind generation, hydraulic generation, geothermal extraction, fission, and fusion. When scaled to the size necessary to satisfy the energy demands of the world, all except fusion have severe unmitigated environmental impacts, induce geopolitical instability, or exhibit very limited availability, reliability, and sustainability. Most technologies suffer from more than one of these drawbacks. The fusion of Deuterium and Tritium ("DT") to form Helium and a neutron is a well-known reaction that yields prodigious amounts of energy. Though sufficient fuel is available in seawater to sustain the global energy demand for millennia, we still need an engine capable of running the reaction. Ion Propulsion - Transport System to the Planets The efficiency of a rocket engine can be described by its specific impulse, which is the change of momentum gained from a 1 kilogram weight of propellent. The Space Shuttle main engines have a specific impulse of 453 seconds which is typical of a liquid fuelled rocket engine. An Ion thruster has a specific impulse of more than 3000 seconds and so requires less than a sixth of the fuel of a liquid fuelled engine. Gridded electrostatic ion thrusters commonly utilize Xenon gas. The gas is first ionized by bombarding it with electrons. The positively charged ions then diffuse through the positive grid and enter a potential difference between the positive and negative grids. The potential difference accelerates the ions to high velocities, which then leave the engine to create thrust. An electron emitter, on the exterior of the engine, neutralizes the ion beam to prevent charge build-up. The typical thrust of an ion engine is equivalent to a weight of 10 grams - about the weight of a sheet of paper. I had to memorize the polyatomic ions for my chem 101 class, so I wrote this little song to help me on the test. Basically I knew the anything ending in -ite or -ate i know are the elements with oxygen in it, I was just worried about the subscripts which is why for some of them I only say 3&4. I basically go from greatest charge to least which is why i only say the charges on a few, it's because I know they are all grouped together so they are the same charge. The singing isn't the best, but I was pretty proud of my self for the creativity!

HOW IT WORKS: The simple explanation: you have a two terminals with a 25k volt potential across them. The air near the tiny "corona" wire turns the air around it ionic. This newly charged ion air, then rushes towards the aluminum skirt (which is at the opposite charge.)..this is the "ion wind". The moving wind, brings new air near the tiny wire, which again becomes ionic, and the whole cycle repeats. The more complicated explanation: The two terminals have a 25k V potential between them. One of the terminals is MUCH smaller than the other. Thus, if since both are charged to the same level, the small wire will have a MUCH steeper electric field gradient around it, than the aluminum skirt will (its electric field gradient is smoother). So, in sum, the smaller wire rips ions (because of its steep electric field gradient) far more fast and readily than the aluminum skirt does. So there is a surplus of ions around the top of the craft, these ions don't stick around long, and rush towards the bottom skirt immediately. This is the "ion wind". The whole cycle repeats...and voila..lift/thrust. NOTE: it does NOT matter if you change the top to negative, and the bottom to positive, or vice versa, you still get ion wind going downward. The ion wind is created by the smaller wire being able to rip ions more readily than the skirt, and it is independent of charge. A MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO THINK ITS NOT ION WIND: it's not "anti-gravity"...or "electrogravitics"....all the internet scholars <b>...</b>
