Stephen Fry speech at the IQ2 debate, 2009 - Part 1 of 2.

Stephen Fry speech at the IQ2 debate, 2009 - Part 1 of 2. A powerful speech, by Stephen Fry, given at the IQ2 debate in 2009, in answer to the question "Is the Catholic Church a force for good in the world?" It just goes to show that cults like the Church of Scientology and the LDS Church for example, are not the only abusive, so-called "religious" organisations in the world (though if I had a choice, I'd get rid of the CoS first!). Original text: Stephen Fry at the iq2 debate, October 2009 Chair Zeinab Badawi introduces the motion 'The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world. Arguing in favour of the motion are Archbishop John Onaiyekan and the Rt Hon. Ann Widdecombe MP. Archbishop Onaiyekan begins by insisting that if the Catholic Church were not a force for good, he would not have devoted his entire life to serving it. He says that the hierarchy of the Catholic Church exists because of its 1.6 billion members worldwide, rather than in spite of them. He points not only to the spiritual assistance that his Church provides, but also to the tangible aid that is given internationally through Catholic projects. Finally, he admits that Catholics are not infallible, but are by necessity sinners trying to improve themselves through their faith. Ann Widdecombe suggests that in trawling all the way back to the Crusades to find something to blame the Catholic Church for, Christopher Hitchens merely demonstrates how flimsy his argument really is. IQ2 Debate: "Europe is failing its Muslims" - Intro, Tariq Ramadan and Douglas Murray. (1 of 6)

As the first speaker in favour of the motion Tariq Ramadan states his belief that Europe has failed its Muslims in various different ways. It has allowed a political discourse in which Muslims, like the Turks and Bosnians, are not viewed as European citizens and has neglected to recognise the historical contribution of Muslim philosophers and scientists in forging the continent's identity, or the economic contribution of Muslims since World War II. Arguing against the motion Douglas Murray states that Islam is associated with violence for good reasons; it wasn't Buddhists or Atheists who were responsible for the 9/11 or 7/7 attacks. He says that the Muslim population has grown extraordinarily fast - from barely anything in the mid 20th century to between 15 and 17 million at the start of the 21st - and has been relatively successful. But there had been a failure of leadership among Muslim leaders, many of who were paid generously by European governments. The current leader of the Muslim Council of Britain couldn't even condemm stoning. Full video available at www.intelligencesquared.com

Francine Stock introduces this debate Public Schools are a blight on British society Francis Wheen looks back unhappily at the philistinism, racism, anti-semitism, bullying and smugness which marred his years at Harrow. He says that public schools are nurseries of vice and immorality, which only call themselves independent out of shame. Their dubious charitable status, worth £100m a year, is subsidised by low income families. Full video available at www.intelligencesquared.com

The motion proposes that "atheism is the new fundamentalism", ie, atheism has replaced religion as the new faith of the secular age, exploring the notion that modern atheism is itself guilty of the very dogma and belief in its own infallibility which it scorns in the religious community. Stephen Fry & friends on the life, loves and hates of Christopher Hitchens - IQ2 talks

hitchfry.intelligencesquared.com In this historic event, Stephen Fry and other friends of Christopher Hitchens came together to celebrate the life and work of this great writer, iconoclast and debater. Fry was joined on stage at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall by Richard Dawkins and the two discussed Hitch's unflinching commitment to the truth. Hollywood actor Sean Penn was beamed in from LA by Google+ and, between cigarette puffs, read from Hitch's acclaimed work, The Trial of Henry Kissinger. Five friends of Hitch spoke via satellite in New York: satirist Christopher Buckley and editor Lewis Lapham mused on Hitch's prowess as a journalist. 'Like a pot of gold', said Lapham. Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and James Fenton delighted the audience with stories of Hitchens as a young man. Rushdie drew roars of laughter when he recounted a word game invented by Amis and Hitchens where the word 'love' is replaced with 'hysterical sex'. Particular favourites included Hysterical Sex in the Time of Cholera and Hysterical Sex Is All You Need. Watching the event with Hitch at his bedside in Texas, Hitch's wife Carol and novelist Ian McEwan provided an email commentary. 'His Rolls Royce mind is still purring beautifully', typed McEwan. The event was watched live by 2500 at the venue, and by thousands more in UK cinemas and online.

Khan was heavily critical of the ways in which General Musharraf, President Asif Ali Zardari and the US had carried out their military offensive in the tribal areas of Pakistan since 2004. He said they had failed to distinguish between al-Qaida and the Taliban, which held limited ideological beliefs. No Pashtun, he said, had ever been involved in international terrorism. Drone attacks, Khan said, were barbaric, and killed many more civilians than they did militants. This was insane, immoral and a sure way to radicalise young Pakistanis. The key to an improvement in the regional situation was political change, and only a sovereign government would be able to separate the tribal people from the extremists.

Jaswant Singh Since the start of the 20th century, the whole of the South Asian region had been at the crossroads of collapsed empire, be it Ottoman, British or Soviet, Singh recalled. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh had been born of the same womb, then detached by caesarean. It was astonishing that Nato had expanded its influence from the Atlantic as far as the Hindu Kush. How was it possible, Singh asked, that 60 years after Independence, the region was once again subject to the whims of the West? It was the failure of Western policies that had brought the regions problems about, and restoring sanity would not be possible with external interests. Jimmy Carter in conversation with Jon Snow - IQ2 talks

This discussion took place at the Royal Festival Hall on 5th October 2011. Event info: President Jimmy Carter is a Nobel Prize winner, author, humanitarian, professor, farmer, naval officer and carpenter. In this special Intelligence² interview with Jon Snow from Channel 4 News at the Royal Festival Hall, President Carter will talk about his career as president, and the past three decades as a senior statesman and ambassador for the Carter Center. Jimmy Carter was US President from 1977 to 1981. His administration's main foreign policy achievements include the Panama Canal treaties, the Camp David Accords, the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union, and the establishment of US diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. After stepping down, he decided to establish the Carter Center along with his wife Rosalynn in 1982 to wage peace, fight disease and build hope worldwide. He was a pioneer in what has now become the widespread practice of putting prestige and status to good use in the world. The Center's programmes have operated in 76 countries to resolve conflicts, advance democracy, human rights and economic opportunity, prevent disease, improve mental health care and teach farmers to increase crop production. Don't miss this opportunity to hear from President Carter as he relates some of his stories from a truly remarkable and well-lived life and shares his views of global politics today.

IQ2 Discussion "Pakistan: what next?" (8 of 12)

William Dalrymple While the media has been only too eager to praise India as an emerging superpower, neighbouring Pakistan has been portrayed as a failed state - and the only US ally bombed regularly by Washington. This contrast, Dalrymple said, was a huge exaggeration: India had its own big problems with Naxalite and Maoist insurgents, and Pakistan had an emerging urban middle class, better infrastructure and a proliferation of TV and radio channels. Though there were huge uncertainties, such as the military's lingering relationship with the jihadis and the emergence of madrasas funded by Gulf oil wealth, Pakistans religious parties still got a very small proportion of the vote. Despite what the alarmists predict, Pakistan is not about to fall apart. Full video available at www.intelligencesquared.com

General Sir David Richards. General Richards said that the international community had been terribly good at coming up with bright ideas, and terribly poor at implementing them. It was, he said, vital to underline that, when Western powers have a mission in a country, the perspective of that country, not the West, was central to the search for solutions. Richards spoke glowingly about the Pakistani army, and praised their operation to flush the Taliban out of the Swat Valley. But he said that more needed to be done to bring the regions top political leaders together, and that, arguably, Pakistan held the key to stability over the entire Muslim world. Anatol Lieven. Lieven said that Pakistan, not Afghanistan, was our key strategic interest in the long term, and that the Western presence was driving radicalisation. He said he had been shocked to find that many Pakistanis regard the Taliban as they did the Mujahedeen, and support their right to fight against foreign occupiers. If we think that well have to talk to the Taliban leadership, Lieven said, Pakistan may be the only international force that can act as an intermediary. Such negotiations take a long time, so we have to start making contacts now, and recognise that Beijing could be a key international player. Full video available at www.intelligencesquared.com

Don't eat animals - IQ2 debate

Full video: www.intelligencesquared.com Event information: Steak and kidney pie. The Sunday roast. Mmm, delicious. In fact more than delicious, part of our way of life. Part of our common humanity, too, since eating meat is probably what allowed our brains to grow big enough to become fully human in the first place. So how could anyone be persuaded to give up eating it? Easy, say the vegetarians. Go to an abattoir. Listen to the shrieks, look at the fear in the eyes of the cow. Then go to a supermarket and look at the results of that bloodfest all neatly packaged up to disguise the cruelty and suffering that preceded the shrink wrap. No one with a streak of compassion, no one who calls themselves human could then stretch out their hand, plonk the slaughter in their shopping basket and feel they were doing right. Or could they? Come to the debate and find out.

Elizabeth Gilbert on failure and forgiveness at IQ2

Full video: www.intelligencesquared.com You have seen the billboards of a pensive, fulfilled Julia Roberts; the author of the book that inspired the film was in London for Intelligence Squared, where Paul Holdengräber brought the intellectual Gilbert to the fore. Gilbert's evenings of her childhood were peopled by eccentric, drunk, and competitively inappropriate family members, who made Elizabeth Gilbert realise that when it comes to storytelling "no one's going to give you the floor...you have to earn it by telling the best story". Here, in conversation with Paul Holdengräber, Gilbert recounts how she literally "married" writing when she was a teenager, in a ceremony in her bedroom, and also how, since the success of her globe-spanning memoir 'Eat, Pray, Love', she has become a more sedentary creature, like Candide nowhere more content than gardening at home in New Jersey. Gilbert and Holdengräber share a delighted reverence for Balzac, Calvino, Tom Waits; their conversation turns into an unashamed and mutual worship of good writing.

Jonathan Paris. Paris foresaw that, over the next one to three years, Pakistan would neither turn into a failed state, nor grow impressively. It would, he predicted, muddle through. Pakistan was not attracting enough investment, and needed to break away from the IMF stranglehold. He said that AfPak, the term coined at the start of the Obama administration, was both an offensive name, and one which revealed an unfortunate truth. For too long, Pakistan has been seen as the means to an end. This was the case when Nixon needed to approach Mao, when America needed to defeat the Soviets, and in the War on Terror. Now it was the means by which the US and Nato were trying to stabilise Afghanistan. Full video available at www.intelligencesquared.com

Has the modern traveller swapped Ulysses' quest for the Happy Isles for a short break at the Holiday Inn? Maybe. But most of us still yearn for the rough, rugged and romantic places of the explorer's imagination, places where no travel company has been before us.... And some of Britain's greatest explorers and travellers will be taking us there, in mind if not in body, as they examine the past, present and future of great exploration. Justin Marozzi will introduce Herodotus, the first explorer as well as the father of history, and follow his high-spirited travels through Turkey, Iraq, Egypt and Greece, examining sex, war and exploration in the fifth century BC. Anthony Sattin will then guide us through the Age of Enlightenment, the greatest age of exploration, and the perfect intersection of knowledge and desire, possibility and challenge. Nowhere was more challenging than the interior of Africa, to which Sir Joseph Banks and his friends turned their attention, sending Mungo Park and other brilliant travellers in search of the lost city of Timbuktu. Christina Dodwell will pay tribute to the great women explorers of the past, including her grandmother who made intrepid journeys by mule in China during the time of the warlords. Assisted suicide should be legalised - IQ2 debate

Full video available at: www.intelligencesquared.com Event information: The law allows me to kill myself, but what if I have a progressive illness and reach a stage when I long to end my life but cannot do so unaided. Isn't it needlessly cruel and illogical that as the law stands, no friend or family member or doctor can then help me die without risking prosecution and a possible jail sentence? No it isn't, say those who oppose legalising assisted suicide. Think of the pressures that would build once it became a legally sanctioned option -- not least the pressure to extend the category of those whom it is permissible to help kill beyond the terminally ill to the old, the frail and even the mildly depressed. Think of the internal and external pressure on elderly relatives to seek assistance for an early exit so as to avoid being a burden and using up the family inheritance; or the pressure on the NHS to create more bed space. Would it not be better, say opponents of legalisation, to retain the kind of fudge we've got at the moment, allowing the Director of Public Prosecutions to give a nod and a wink to assisted suicide unless he suspects foul play? Or is that just a recipe for the very uncertainty -- and attendant misery -- that gives rise to such passionate calls for a change in the law in the first place?

Both sides delivered passionate, sincere and reasoned arguments.
