Professor Harman explains isotopes and atomic mass in this lesson covering atomic structure. Most elements exist in nature as more than one isotope. Isotopes are atoms that have the same number of protons as the element but a different number of neutrons. The number of protons always remains the same, as this number (also known as the atomic number) is what determines the element. Prof. Harman also introduces atomic mass units, or amu's, which are a more convenient unit for describing the very small masses of atoms. Next, Professor Harman explains more about the masses of elements. The amu is derived from carbon 12 and is equal to 1.6605 x 10^-27. The relative atomic mass listed on the periodic table of the elements is a weighted average of the masses of the isotopes of an element. You might also observe that the mass of an isotope is less than the sum of masses of its nucleons and electrons. Professor Harman explains the relationship between mass and energy that Einstein ...

Atoms and Isotopes

Most people recognize that atoms are the fundamental building blocks of all matter around us. An atom itself is composed of protons, neutrons and electrons. The simplest atom is the hydrogen atom because it consists of only one proton and one electron. If a neutron is added to the nucleus, the atom is still hydrogen, just a more massive version. Atoms of the same element (ie those with the same number of protons) but different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes.

Radioactive Isotopes

Alpha particles, beta particles and gamma rays. Alpha particles are helium nuclei with a +2 charge, Big, heavy and slow moving, don't penetrate into materials, Very ionising, Blocked by paper. Beta particles are high-energy electrons with a -1 charge; Quite small, move quite fast, Penetrate materials moderately, Ionise moderately, for every beta particle emitted, a neutron turns into a proton in the nucleus, some are blocked by thin Aluminium, but certainly blocked by tissue. Gamma rays are electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelength (higher frequency) than x-rays, Opposite to alpha, Penetrate materials well, Weakly ionising, blocked by 7 cm of lead. dupuis.shawbiz.ca

Radioactive isotope storage housing problem

Storage housing are usually made from some inadequate metals or some other material even in professional cases. For storaging some of radioactive isotopes you need to know what is the best material which stops there activities. I will show you one professional calibration/control source of Strontium-90 (90Sr) isotope which you can find in JNA Army (ex. Yugoslav army) Geiger counter made in Banja Luka's factory 'Rudi Čajevec'. Small amount of Strontium-90 is stored in a round alluminium alloy box with small 2mm hole for measuring and calibration (holes for access). In this moment source give about 250 uSv/h with Beta particles and secondary X-rays electromagnetic radiation with activity of 4 kBq for X-rays. Note that 90Sr is almost a perfectly pure beta source which decay into Yttrium-90 (90Y emmits beta particles with very small amount low energy gamma photons). This can be changed with wrong material used for storing isotope. In this case isotope + wrong storing box materiall = bremsstrahlung ('Braking radiation'). Secondary low energy x-rays generated by bremsstrahlung are side effects that you want to avoid or you want to know about it to calculate it into calibration calculation. I'll show you X-rays radiation arising from 90Sr source stored in inadequate box. Measured with next two detectors: 1. DR-M3 (JNA army GM counter) - Gamma (with Gamma shield) and Beta/Gamma (without shield) detection. Units are mR/h (mili Roentgens per hour). 2. TSA-PRM470A (Scintillation ...
