Tariq Jahan's Plea For Calm Over Hit & Run Deaths
The father of a man killed when he was hit by a car during a night of disorder in Birmingham has appealed for calm and for people to stay at home. Tariq Jahan's son, Haroon Jahan, 21, died along with Shahzad Ali, 30, and Abdul Musavir, 31, as they protected property on Tuesday night. Mr Jahan said he wanted everyone to remain calm, and for communities to be united. Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder. The three men were part of a crowd of 80 or so people guarding property in Dudley Road in the Winson Green area. Police arrested 163 people during Tuesday night, after violence took place in Birmingham, West Bromwich and Wolverhampton. Mr Jahan said losing a family member was something no mother, father, son or sister should endure. "Today, we stand here to call to all the youth to remain calm, for our communities to stay united," he said. "As we stand here today, this is not a race issue. The families have received messages of sympathy and support from all parts of the communities - from all faiths, all colours and backgrounds." He appealed for people to respect the memories of their sons by staying away from trouble and not going out. "I have lost my son - if you want to lose yours step forward, otherwise calm down and go home." This video shows Tariq Jahan, the father of an innocent peace loving man, Haroon Jahan who was killed in what has been described as a muderous hit-and-run attack in Birmingham on Tuesday night. Mr. Jahan said he was helping one of the injured men, one of two brothers, Shezad Ali & Abdul Musavir, who also both tragically died, when somebody told him his own son was on the ground behind him. This vile, despicable act of muder has made me sick to my stomach. Murder knows no colour. Murder is murder & as Mr. Jahan says: Why? Why would anyone do such a thing? He moved to Pakistan before it became independent in 1947, living in the village of Ladian, in the district of Gujrat. There he enlisted with the newly formed Pakistani Army and was commissioned to the Punjab Regiment in 1950. His father's name was Master Abdullah Bhatti, and his mother's name was Bibi Amna. He had four brothers, Nazir, Bashir, Sardar and Rashid, and two sisters, Rashida and Tahira. He himself had six children, four sons named Major Zafar Javed Bhatti, Dr Zulfiquar Ahmad Bhatti, Rafique Ahmad Bhatti, and Iqbal Javed Bhatti and two daughters named Riffat Bhatti and Zeenat Bhatti. Throughout his career, he was a brilliant officer and stood out in his class. He received his honours from Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan, who was later assassinated. On 6 September, 1965, the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 broke out between India and Pakistan. Major Bhatti was posted in the Burki area of Lahore sector. As the company commander, Major Bhatti chose to move his platoon forward under constant firing from Indian tanks and artillery. For three or more day's he went without rest.
