She goes all Dragon Ball Z and wallops it with the force of a thousand super saiyans. All animae references aside, this thing is great for dozens of reasons: immediate, conceptual, varied, and engaging. There's not a moment where I felt underwhelmed. The most out-of-place track has to be the Of Montreal collaboration on "Make the Bus," which isn't doing too much for me. Outside of that, I can't really say anything bad about this album. Janelle Monae: Music as a Means to Unite
Janelle Monae grew up with hopes of becoming a Broadway luminary... until she realized something powerful: that music was the vehicle by which she was meant to move others. She produced her first album, Metropolis, and was then signed by Diddy's Bad Boy Records. Along the way, Monae started Wondaland Arts Society, a place that would serve as a record label and embrace all things unique. If her flashy footwork, instantly iconic hair and strong, driving voice aren't reasons enough to admire this musician, her stance on music as a way to bring people together certainly is.
