Gundula Janowitz, R. Strauss: Capriccio, Climax of the Opera, Complete

Capriccio, A Conversation Piece for Music in One Act, by Clemens Krauss and Richard Strauss (1864 -1949), first performed in Munich, October 28, 1942. Opera climax, complete. Gundula Janowtiz, soprano. Karl Böhm, conductor. [English translation} (Countess Madeleine singing from the sonnet to which music has been added:) ""Your image in my ardent bosom glows, Enthroned there to keep my heart on fire; Where you reside, there dwells my sole desire; In vain would Venus beckon if she chose. What joy, what pain your gentle eye bestows; Indeed, one gaze can wild despair inspire; The next restore my fondest hope entire. Your glances deal me life or mortal blows."" In vain do I try to keep them apart, for words and music are blended together to form a single creation. Mysterious experience, finding one art restored by the other. ""Were yet my days prolonged beyond all measure, No other being's favour would I treasure, No other passion can compel my heart. All through the waking hours my thoughts enfold; All night my slumbering eyes in dreams behold; Thus shall it be till from this earth I part."" How their love is rising to meet me, tenderly woven of verses and music. How can I tear this delicate fabric? Am I myself not part of its texture? To make a decision? For Flamand, the noble spirit with the ardent glance, for Olivier, the stalwart soul. the impassioned man? Well, dearest Madeleine, what says your heart? Ah, you are loved, but whom do you love now? Oh, but it was sweet not ...

Part II - Your Favorites: GUNDULA JANOWITZ

THIS PART IS FOR YOUR FAVORITES! Gundula Janowitz? Do you agree with her placement in a favorite-list? Please comment! Gundula Janowitz, Soprano (born 1937) Johann Strauss II - Die Fledermaus Klänge der Heimat (Czardas) Conductor: Karl Böhm (Recorded 1972 ) My personal opinion: Herbert von Karajan became her mentor in the late 1950s. This is of course a remarkable point in her biography, but Gundula Janowitz didn´t need it at all. With or without the maestro, she advanced to one of the finest sopranos the post-war decades saw. Born in Berlin, she grew up in Austria, studied in Graz (Hubert Thöny) and was heard at the end of the 1950s in "Schöpfung" with Karajan. We know almost all kind of sopranos, the big, loud, spectacular and ravishing - Janowitz´ voice was a noble instrument with bright pure, almost intramundane sound, only little vibrato and excellent breath-control. She was one of those intimate singers in the line of Elisabeth Grümmer, the timbre was similar. The voice of Miss Janowitz was exceptional lyrical, despite this she sang some dramatic parts. I remember her Leonore ("Fidelio"). My personal favorite is her intelligent funny Rosalinde which she sang with the "grandezza" of a Mozart-Singer (In my own opinion far better than the high-praised portrayal of Hilde Güden, who really in fact was a soubrette). Unforgetable Miss Janowitz´ Countess in "Nozze di Figaro" or Pamina. Her repertoire ranked from Baroque to Richard Strauss, she sang with almost every great ...

Gundula Janowitz sings In trutina and Dulcissime from Carmina Burana

These two pieces are taken from the 1968 Carmina Burana that was conducted by Eugen Jochum and was approved by Carl Orff himself. In 'In trutina', I think Janowitz captures both the necessary naivety and the underlying passion that makes the character finally choose the boy rather than chastity. In 'Dulcissime'. she sings with unbridled ecstasy. All of this wrapped in Janowitz's voice of unrivalled beauty. To my ear and mind, neither of these performances have ever been eualled; no wonder Orff gave his seal of approval to this version.

WA Mozart "Le Nozze di Figaro" Act IIl Susanna "Canzonetta Sull'aria - Che Soave Zefiretto" Lucia Popp - Susanna Gundula Janowitz - La Contessa di Almaviva Conductor: Sir Georg Solti Orchestra: London Philharmonic Orchestra Live: Paris, 1981 (Live) Tribute to Great Soprano Lucia Popp on her birthday, 12 November The action of The Marriage of Figaro is a continuation of the plot of The Barber of Seville several years later, and recounts a single "day of madness" (la folle giornata) in the palace of the Count Almaviva near Seville, Spain. Rosina is now the Countess; her husband, the Count (a scheming middle-aged baritone, rather than the romantic youthful tenor of Rossini's Barber) is seeking the favors of the Countess' maid and confidante, the young Susanna, who is about to wed her fiancé, Figaro, the Count's valet. In an effort to pursue his amorous designs towards Susanna, the Count keeps finding excuses not to perform the civil part of the wedding of his two servants, which is arranged for this very day. When the Count detects the interest of the adolescent page, Cherubino (a breeches role), in the Countess, he tries to get rid of Cherubino by giving him an officer's commission in his own regiment. Figaro, Susanna, and the Countess conspire to embarrass the Count and expose his scheming. Meanwhile Figaro has been caught up in a dispute with Bartolo and Marcellina, which ends when he is revealed to be their long lost, out-of-wedlock son. The Count and Don Bartolo are ...

Beethoven Fidelio I.6.Prisoners Chorus - Mehta,Janowitz,Vickers,Adam.avi

Ludwig van Beethoven Fidelio In the Orange old theatre (France) Gundula Janovitz, Jon Vichers, Theo Adam New Philarmonia conducted by Zubin Metha Fidelio (Op. 72) is a German opera in two acts, it is the only opera by Beethoven. The opera tells how Leonore, disguised as a prison guard named "Fidelio", rescues her husband Florestan from death in a political prison. The story fits Beethoven's aesthetic and political outlook: a story of personal sacrifice, heroism and eventual triumph (the usual topics of Beethoven's "middle period") with its underlying struggle for liberty and justice mirroring contemporary political movements in Europe.

Let my sight be free of the unlucky object Of my weakness. To what a pass This cruel man has brought me! This is a just reward for my sins! Was this the time For me to heed the sighs Of a new lover, to make sport Of another's sighs? Ah, rightly You condemn this heart, o just love! I burn, and my ardour is no longer The outcome of a virtuous love: It is madness, Anguish, remorse, repentance Fickleness, deceit and betrayal! No. 25 - Rondo: In pity's name, my dearest, forgive The misdeed of a loving soul; Oh God, it shall evermore be hidden Among these shady bushes. My courage, my constancy Will drive away this dishonourable desire And banish the memory Which fills me with shame and horror. And who is it whom This unworthy heart has betrayed? Enjoy this magnificent music which is amazingly interpretated by a reference soprano, Gundula Janowitz. This is also my way to pay my deepest respects to this wonderful singer who kept me company quite often especially in Mozart's arias. Nun der Tag mich mud gemacht, Soll mein sehnliches Verlangen Freundlich die gestirnte Nacht Wie ein mudes Kind empfangen. Now that day has tired me, My spirits long for Starry night kindly To enfold them, like a tired child. Hande, lasst von allem Tun, Stirn, vergiss du alles Denken, Alle meine Sinne nun Wollen sich in Schlummer senken. Hands, leave all your doing; Brow, forget all your thoughts. Now all my senses Want to sink themselves into slumber. Und die Seele unbewacht Will in freien Flugen schweben, Um im Zauberkreis der Nacht Tief und tausendfach zu leben.
