Her owner recognised her by her brown collar on television at an animal shelter after she was rescued. Ban was spotted on the roof of a house being dragged out to sea.

Coast guard members aboard a helicopter involved in the day's search for those still missing after the disaster found the dog on the roof drifting along some 1.8 kilometres off Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture. Hachiko történetét dolgozta fel a Hachikō Monogatari című 1987-es film is, mely végigkövette a kutya életét a születésétől egészen a haláláig, sőt még a halála utáni spirituális egymásratalálását is megörökítette gazdájával. 2004-ben pedig egy gyerekeknek szóló könyvet írtak róla, Hachikō: the true story of a loyal dog (Hachiko: egy hűséges kutya igaz története) címmel, melynek szerzője Pamela S. Turner volt és Yan Nascimbene illusztrálta. Ugyanebben az évben megjelent róla egy másik gyermekkönyv is, melynek címe Hachiko Waits, azaza Hachiko vár.
