There's a major search and rescue operation underway in Japan. 300 hundred military planes and 40 ships have joined the mission to survey the damage. It's the north east of Japan which has been worst hit by the massive tsunami caused by the biggest in nearly a century and a half. At the centre the city of Sendai, where the worst is feared for hundreds perhaps thousands of people. The official figure of dead is currently 95 and rising. The wave crashes over the seawall carrying away everything in its path, including boats that topple over the wall and are smashed into a bridge. That's a figure which even the most optimistic estimates suggest will rise dramatically. The huge wave was caused by the biggest earthquake in the country's history. Japan has now asked the UN to send rescue teams to help deal with the disaster. Another earthquake has also hit central Japan in the past hours, although there are no reports of damage from this latest aftershock. An emergency situation has been declared at the Fukushima nuclear plant in the north east, after it was damaged. The pressure inside the reactor is rising, raising fears of a radiation leak. But Japan's nuclear safety agency says to reduce the pressure, radioactive vapor may be released, posing no risk to humans or the environment.

Japan's energy operator TEPCO has detected the highest level of radiation at the Fukushima nuclear facility since the March earthquake and Tsunami hit the plant. The reading, taken between the first and second reactor buildings, registered at levels considered fatal to human health. The company and government say they remain on target to bring the reactors to a safe state of cold shutdown by January.
