Sony's shiny, new handheld device had a decent launch week in Japan but has since dramatically dropped off in sales, prompting a price drop by some retailers. . The Nintendo 3DS enjoyed a good launch in Japan and retailers were hoping the 3DS would match or beat its numbers. Launch week saw around 320000 units sold but the following week only around 72000 units sold. That is significantly less than Nintendo's counterpart. . Retailers weren't so happy about this so they took it upon themselves to lower the price of the 3G model of the Vita by as much as 20% in order to get units off the shelves. The more popular Wi-Fi version is $50 cheaper and has the same Internet access capabilities as long as you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. The 3G allows you to use mobile phone networks to connect where Wi-Fi is not available. . Here in the US that means a contract with AT&T. The pricing will be similar to 3G iPads starting at around $15 bucks a month. Add that onto the the $300 price tag of the 3G Vita and I'm not surprised the 3G models are collecting dust. . The initial announcement of the Vita's price point seemed to indicate that it was meant to be a competitor to the 3DS, and perhaps the Vita will see a similar fate.
