Japan tsunami: the Red Cross response so far
The massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March caused widespread destruction and suffering. Almost 28000 people have been reported dead or missing and tens of thousands are still living in evacuation centres. Since the disaster began, the Japanese Red Cross has been providing people in need with first aid and emergency healthcare, as well as distributing relief items. As the operation moves out of the relief and into the recovery phase, the Japanese Red Cross is helping to fit out 70000 temporary homes with an appliance package consisting of key domestic items such as rice cookers, microwave and kettles. These items will benefit around 280000 people in the three hardest hit prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima and Iwate. The completion and equipping of these prefabricated homes will be a major step towards easing the pressure on evacuation centres and allowing people to return to some semblance of normal life.

Chernobyl: 25 Years On
As the world focuses on the triple disaster in Japan, 26 April marks the 25th anniversary of the catastrophic nuclear explosion at Chernobyl that affected over seven million million people. Ukraine, Russia and Belarus continue to live with the invisible, poisonous legacy that has demonstrated the dangers of nuclear power. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, alongside the Red Cross societies of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia, started CHARP, the Chernobyl Humanitarian Assistance and Rehabilitation Programme, in 1990. The basis of the programme is mass thyroid gland screening in the most rural and inaccessible areas in three regions of Ukraine, three in Belarus and one Russian region. Each year seven mobile laboratories screen some 100000 patients using ultrasound machines or fine needle biopsy. Psychological support, breast screening and healthy lifestyle information, including HIV/AIDS eduction, are also offered. This film shows the work done in one day in one mobile laboratory Over the years, CHARP donors have included the Irish Government, the Japanese Red Cross, Netherlands Red Cross, Australian Red Cross and the governments of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. If a new donor is not found soon, the CHARP programme may have to be wound down, which would be a tragedy within a tragedy.

www.redcross.org.uk British Red Cross. Or to the Red Cross in your country. A massive earthquake, the seventh largest recorded in history, struck the east coast of Japan on Friday 11 March. The earthquake, measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, triggered a tsunami which hit the east coast of Japan with 7-metre-high waves, leaving a trail of destruction. More than 2000 people have died in the disaster and some 2000 are injured. The number of confirmed dead is expected to rise to around 10000. The earthquake triggered fires and caused severe damage to buildings, leaving 1.2 million homes without electricity and 1.4 million without water. The Japanese Red Cross has been working on the ground since the disaster began, mobilising 85 teams, made up of more than 700 doctors, nurses and support staff, to provide first aid and healthcare and assess the damage and needs of the communities affected. More than 500000 people have been evacuated and are being housed in temporary centres set up in schools and public buildings where the Red Cross is distributing thousands of blankets. The Japanese Red Cross has agreed to accept donations from the UK. In the event that we receive more donations to the Japan Tsunami Appeal than the Japanese Red Cross and International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement can reasonably and efficiently spend, any surplus funds will be used to help us prepare for and respond to humanitarian disasters both here in the UK and overseas.
