Harry Chapin - Sniper

Harry Chapin sings "Sniper" in his 1975 appearance on PBS Soundstage. The song is about the 1966 University of Texas massacre perpetrated by Charles Whitman, and is told from Whitman's perspective. This is one of Chapin's most dynamic and powerful filmed performances.

Alice At The Palace (1981) - Eating Mushrooms / Jabberwocky

Meryl Streep and the rest of the cast sing "Eating Mushrooms" (appropriate enough for an adaptation of the Alice stories) and perform an interpretation of "Jabberwocky" in the New York Shakespeare Festival production of Elizabeth Swados' "Alice At The Palace" (1981). Look out for Rodney Hudson, Michael Jeter, Betty Aberlin and Mark Linn-Baker among the sea of faces.

Stop The World, I Want To Get Off - Mumbo Jumbo

A song from the 1966 movie version of Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse's "Stop The World, I Want To Get Off." This version stars veteran Broadway actor/director Tony Tanner, who, though in his 70s, continues to write, direct and act to this day.
Terry Gilliam confuses a little girl

A clip from "Getting Gilliam" by Vincenzo Natali shows Terry Gilliam talking to Jodelle Ferland about the word "derivative" in reference to a school book report on Tideland. Perhaps he's not as close to being a 9-year-old girl as he'd like us to believe.

Stop The World, I Want To Get Off - 3 Songs

Three songs from the 1966 movie version of Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse's "Stop The World, I Want To Get Off": Gonna Build A Mountain, Once In A Lifetime, What Kind Of Fool Am I? This version stars veteran Broadway actor/director Tony Tanner, who, though in his 70s, continues to write, direct and act to this day.
Alice In Wonderland (1983) - End Credits

The end credits sequence from the 1983 Great Performances version of "Alice In Wonderland." I happen to love the music used in this sequence, which was composed by English musician Richard Addinsell for the original 1933 stage production of "Alice."
"Pass It On" - Kurt Kaiser, Ralph Carmichael (from "Tell It Like It Is," 1968)

This is "Pass It On," from the original vinyl recording of "Tell It Like It Is," a Christian youth musical from 1968. "Pass It On" has since become a standard for many churches and camp groups. It is a tradition at the high school I attended to use the song at a candle-lighting ceremony commemorating the graduation of the senior class and the arrival of the incoming freshman class. This video includes a short clip from my own "Pass It On" ceremony in 1999. The Episcopal School of Dallas is a K-12th grade college-preparatory institution founded in Texas in 1970.

The Magic Show - Where Did The Magic Go?

Uploaded by request... Didi Conn sings Stephen Schwartz's "Where Did The Magic Go?," from the 1981 filmed version of the Broadway show. (This song replaced "West End Avenue" from the original version of the musical.) If you like this, consider purchasing the DVD distributed by Image Entertainment.
Alice In Wonderland (1983) - Who Stole The Tarts?

The trial scene the 1983 Great Performances version of "Alice In Wonderland," directed by Kirk Browning and starring Kate Burton as Alice. It's remarkably faithful to the book. My all-time favorite line is Austin Pendleton screaming "HE STOLE THOSE TARTS!"

The Tales Of Hoffmann - Elle A Fui La Tortourelle

The aria "Elle a Fui la Tortourelle" ("She has flown, the turledove") from Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's 1951 version of Jacques Offenbach's opera Les Contes d'Hoffmann. Ann Ayars sings and acts the part of Antonia. This version was performed in English, not the original French.
Alice At The Palace (1981) - Alice's Dinner Party

A quartet of queens invite each other to Alice's (Meryl Streep) dinner party, in this clip from the New York Shakespeare Festival production of Elizabeth Swados' "Alice At The Palace" (1981). Look out for Betty Aberlin as one of the queens, a familiar face for those who watched Mr. Roger's Neighborhood in the '80s.

Alice At The Palace (1981) - The Caterpillar

Who *are* you? Meryl Streep meets an oddly Indian caterpillar that would probably be considered culturally insensitive if it weren't so darn funny, in the New York Shakespeare Festival production of Elizabeth Swados' "Alice At The Palace" (1981).
