Jeanjean Etude No. 10 from "16 Modern Studies for Clarinet" by Paul Jeanjean. (Seize études modernes pour la clarinette). Performed by James age 14. Paul Jeanjean (1874 - 1928) was a noted French composer. While known primarily for his clarinet compositions, he also composed for other instruments, such as the bassoon and cornet. He studied with one of the most important clarinet teachers, Chrysogone Cyrille Rose. His compositions for the clarinet are mainly studies for the practice of technical elements. Every year, the Paris Conservatoire would call on the clarinet teachers to compose music for that of their own use and also for their students. As a result we now have many sets of studies for the clarinet. The nefarious 2nd etude is finally good enough to share. Here is a recent practice. I am becoming more comfortable with circular breathing, which I began working on about a year ago. I am playing the entire etude at one tempo, about quarter = 80. But the second part felt more comfortable faster, so it is at a quarter 88.

Jean" is the title of a popular song from 1969 It was written by the American poet and composer Rod McKuen, who also recorded a version of the song. The song was the theme to the film adaptation of Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, which starred noted British film actress Maggie Smith. Smith won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the lead character in the film, Jean Brodie. The song "Jean", as performed by songwriter McKuen, was also nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Original Song. Although released as a single in the summer of 1969, McKuen's version of the song failed to reach the American music charts. "Jean" was also recorded by the American singer William Swofford, who was known professionally by his middle name, Oliver. This is the version I used for this video.
