Jeddah is the second largest city after Riyadh, it is the main port of the Kingdom on the Red Sea and main gate through which most of the pilgrims arrive by air and sea to perform Umrah, Haj or to visit the two holy mosques. Area inhabited is more than 1500 km, and population is more than one and half million. Jeddah is an industrial and active commercial center, with modern features, squares and courtyards. It is an important tourism center, with an eighty kilometer long beautiful corniche on the Red Sea coast. Jeddah also comprises the King Abdul Aziz University, King Abdul Aziz International Airport and Jeddah Islamic Port. King Fahd Fountain is located inside the Red Sea, near the coast, is an outstanding feature of the port of Jeddah particularly during the night when it sends beautiful colored water up to two hundred and sixty meters. The name Jeddah meaning the "Ancestor of Women" is attributable to the tomb in the city which is believed to belong to Eve. Today, it is not however possible to see that interesting place since the Saudi Arabian government had the tomb destroyed for the reason that it would instigate perversions in the religion. Jeddah which gained importance during the Ottoman rule, was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hejaz and later came under the British control. It joined the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1927.

When we met with the Emir Sultan Bin Selman, president of the Antiquities and Tourism authority, in Al-Diriyah, we asked him about the Old Jeddah. We met as scheduled and he took us on a tour in the old Jeddah, starting with one of the most important places in ancient city's history: Beit Nassif. "This is probably the only archeological site on the Red Sea shore. We want to revitalize this site in Jeddah," said Emir Sultan Bin Selman. From Beit Nassif, where King Abdul Aziz resided during his first entry to Jeddah in the battle for the Unification of Saudi Arabia, we moved on to visit other historical sites, but a small sign caught the Emir's attention: "You need to see this sign; it is part of the citizen training program to preserve and conserve the heritage sites," the Emir said on preserving their culture. "We restored 20 sites in the kingdom and we want to bring the people closer to their heritage," he added. The sign's project diverted our tour when we met a group of young people participating in the restoration process and the Emir Sultan forgot the plan we agreed on and joined the group. Alfredo Salmos, 52, an overseas Filipino worker in Jeddah Saudi Arabia is appealing for help after he was accidentally electrocuted about two years ago in his work. According to Salmos, he was sucked into a 14000 volts breaker that he was trying to shut down. Salmos has suffered burns and wounds which damaged his face, head and neck. Wounds formed into keloids and hardened scars which make him difficult to move. He is currently jobless due to his condition. Salmos is from Nueva Ecija who moved to Saudi Arabia 30 years ago to earn a living. Salmos said that he has lost communication with his family and that they have moved to another place. He will live with his mother in Nueva Ecija once granted a final exit visa by the Saudi government. On the other hand, Saudi government could not just issue him his exit clearance unless he settles a car that is allegedly under his name. It was learned that Salmos figured in a car accident a decade ago. Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia can help Salmos by providing him food, clothes and financial assistance. Challenging Jeddah's Floods By: Aqeel Bukhamsin Al Arabiya The flood disaster that afflicted Jeddah earlier this year, was the second to hit the city in 15 months. The western Saudi city lost around 17 billion riyals after this disaster. Reports indicate that the infrastructure in Jeddah needs investments that can cost up to 45 billion riyals. The damages on the ground pushed the government to address this issue. ARAMCO, a leading company in Saudi Arabia, is running a rain and flood discharging project to target this problem. The project manager, Engineer Ahmed Al Selim, has more to tell us about this project. Al Selim: "This is a photocopied image of Jeddah. Our project is divided into three sections. The first section is concerned with the flood banks that lie at mountainous areas. We have 15 watersheds that are now being studied by our team. The second section of the project addresses the issue of discharging floods through main channels. The third section deals with collecting water from neighborhoods and discharging it through main channels." According to Mr. Selim, the flooding issue in Jeddah can be addressed in two stages. The first stage consists of implementing urgent actions so as to solve the problem before next winter, while the second stage includes formulating permanent solutions that tackle the problem from its origins. A fire started in school, the exits were not functional, so students/females started jumping from 3rd floor.? Two teachers died and about 40 students/teachers were injured. According to media reports, emergency rescue teams managed to help evacuate more than 840 students and employees from the structure, which houses a pre-primary, primary and middle school. The incident has triggered criticism of how emergency situations are dealt with in Saudi Arabia, and prompted several parents to demand improved safety standards for the country's public and private schools. According the Website Arab News, Fouad Al-Ahmadi, a young man who contributed to rescue efforts at the school, said he was shocked by the institution's lack of preparedness. "I could not find even an emergency exit sign in the building. I was horrified to learn later that the exits were bolted and blocked with chains. I also failed to see any fire extinguishers", Al-Ahmadi was quoted as saying. However, a preliminary investigation into the fire has reportedly claimed that Baraim Al-Watan was up to par. The cause of the blaze is yet unknown.

Saudi Arabia made its debut into the horror movie genre on Tuesday with the screening of "Hidden Evil" at the fifth Asian Consuls General Club Film Festival in Jeddah. The movie, directed by Saudi filmmaker Dr. Fahad Ghazoli, was also featured at the Dubai Film Festival in January. "When we initially thought of the idea of making a horror film, we realized it would be the first attempt in Saudi Arabia as well as in the Gulf area generally. We showed our film in the Dubai Film Festival and we won a number of awards there and they did ask me: 'why a horror film?' I said that we want to stand out at something - we see drama and we see comedy, let's try a horror film." The cinema industry in the Kingdom is moderated due to significant amount of censorship in art and media, and cinemas and theatres are completely banned, leaving Saudi film fans little choice but to travel to neighboring countries to watch movies. There has been a recent emergence of young Saudi filmmakers and actor Jamil al-Ali is optimistic about the developments in Saudi cinema. The 11-day festival closed yesterday with the screening of the Indonesian film "Under the Protection of the Ka'aba". Films from Philippines, Bangladesh, and Korea were also screened at the festival.
