Petra (Greek "πέτρα" (petra), meaning rock; Arabic: البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ) is a historic and archaeological city in the Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that has rock cut architecture and a water conduits system. Established sometime around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan as well as its most visited tourism attraction. It lies on the slope of Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate Prize-winning sonnet by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage." Petra was chosen by the BBC as one of "the 40 places you have to see before you die". Pliny the Elder and other writers identify Petra as the capital of the Nabataeans and the centre of their caravan trade. Dozens of Jordanian goldsmiths have been forced out of business because of increasing gold prices, which have made it difficult for them to make a living. The goldsmiths rely on selling most of their products to clients in oil-rich countries in the Arab region. However, the rise in gold prices, combined with ongoing economic weakness, has left shops with no option but to close. "There used to be 400 workshops, but now there are only 50. This is a result of the increase in gold prices, which means that people do not buy (gold)," said one workshop owner, Ziad al-Lama. "We had to reduce the weight of the pieces. For example, one that used to weigh 10 grams, we make it seven grams. We have to drop 30 percent of the weight. As a result, a piece that used to cost JD100 ($140 USD) now costs JD70 ($98 USD)," al-Lama said. Jordanians are also buying less of the precious metal, which is used as bridal gifts for weddings. Gold prices have increased by nearly 17 percent this year, and hit a record $1920.20 an ounce in September. It had fallen to $1675.30 an ounce on Tuesday. In the ancient downtown area of Amman, I receive a lesson on how to dress as a traditional Jordanian. The shemagh(شماغ) is a versatile and comfortable piece of clothing. Shading you from the sun, keeping you warm when cold and protecting you from the sandstorms that inevitably blow. The thick cotton fabric is soft and inviting. When the shemagh(شماغ) is wrapped with the face covered, I experience a feeling of safety and protection. The distinct red and white pattern denotes that you are Jordanian. I simply cannot get enough of the Jordanian experience. I must be a bedouin at heart.
