In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make a Mint Julep. Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, which is a thoroughbred horse race, run at Churchill Downs the first Saturday of May each year, since 1875. This recipe is very close to the one that is served at Churchill Downs. Ingredients: ½ cup sugar ½ cup water 5 fresh mint leaves 6 additional fresh mint leaves crushed ice, dry (not melted) 2 ounces Kentucky Bourbon whisky small drinking straw sprig of fresh mint Add ½ cup sugar, ½ cup water, and 5 fresh mint leaves to a small pot. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and boil 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Chill in refrigerator overnight. To make a single Mint Julep, use a glass about the size and shape of an "Old Fashioned" glass that has been chilled in the freezer. (A frosted silver julep cup is an even better container.) Place 1 tablespoon of the chilled mint-infused simple syrup in the bottom of the chilled glass. Place 6 fresh mint leaves in the syrup. Use a spoon to muddle (crush) the 6 mint leaves. Fill glass nearly full with dry crushed ice, leaving room for adding whisky. Pour 2 ounces Kentucky Bourbon whisky over the crushed ice. Add a small straw and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. One Mint Julep - Barney Kessel 1964 Barney Kessel's trio in a broadcast recording in the Netherlands in 1964. With him on bass is Buddy Woodson and Stan Levey on drums. Barney Kessel (1923 -- 2004) was an American jazz guitarist He began his career as a teenager touring with local dance bands before moving on to bands such as that led by Chico Marx. He quickly established himself as a key post-Charlie Christian jazz guitarist. In 1944 he participated in the Lester Young film "Jammin' the Blues" most of it to be seen on my youtube site, and in 1947 he recorded with Charlie Parker's New Stars on the "Relaxin' at Camarillo" session for Dial Records. Barney Kessel is known for his innovative work in the guitar trio setting. In the 1950s, he made a series of albums called "The Poll Winners" with Ray Brown on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Kessel was also a member of the Oscar Peterson Trio with Ray Brown in the early 1950s. The guitar chair was called the hardest gig in show business since Peterson often liked to play at breakneck tempos. Herb Ellis took over from Kessel after a year or so. A "first call" guitarist at Columbia Pictures, during the 1960s Kessel became one of the most in-demand session guitarists in America, and is considered a key member of the group of first-call session musicians now usually known as The Wrecking Crew. Released in March of 1952, "One Mint Julep" was the first of the Clovers' "cautionary drinking songs" and it went to #2 on the R&B charts ultimately becoming a Carolina Beach Music standard. Although Buddy Bailey has the lead on this one, the "tinkling piano" of Harry Van Walls was quite a hook for the tune.

"One Mint Julep" was a rhythm and blues song written by Rudy Toombs that became a hit for The Clovers in 1952. Toombs was hired by Atlantic Records to write humorous up-tempo rhythm and blues novelty songs. The humor in this song comes in part from the idea of a young black man getting drunk on mint juleps, thought of as an aristocratic southern white woman's drink. In 1961 "One Mint Julep" finally reached a mass audience when Ray Charles's instrumental version reached No. 1 on the R&B charts and also No. 8 on the pop chart. Charles' version, featuring him on the Hammond B-3 organ, was from his 1961 album "Genius + Soul = Jazz". Featuring arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns, Charles was accompanied by members of The Count Basie Band. It's almost time for wearing big hats, eating hot browns, and cheering on your favorite horse! Sure, it's one of the shortest celebrated events ("The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports") but the Kentucky Derby is still a tradition that deserves its fair share of recognition. This week I'm paying homage to my Old Kentucky Home by coming up with an easy recipe for a Non-alcoholic version of the famous Mint Julep. I'm going to warn you before you get to crafting this beverage: if you haven't had the original before, I would go that route. While a non-alcoholic Mint Julep is all sweet, fine, and dandy it's a little bit of a loss in my book. The point of a Mint Julep is to showcase the Kentucky Bourbon and without it...well, it feels a bit blasphemous (for lack of a better word). Then again, it could just be my Kentucky pride making me biased. That is why I also included the steps for a more traditional Mint Julep as well. To each their own, the decision is yours. Honey Mint Julep What You'll Need: 10 fresh mint leaves 2 tbsp. VERY HOT water 2-1/2 tbsp. real honey 2 cups ice 3 piece shaker set, like my Browne Halco cocktail shaker www.katom.com 1 muddler www.katom.com Rocks Glass restaurant-supplies.katom.com 4 oz. Ginger Ale (I use Kentucky Ginger Ale) OR 2 oz. Kentucky Bourbon Instructions: Add 8 mint leaves to the hot water. Stir until leaves are wilted.
