Echoes of Sufi Chants - Kafi Bulleh Shah (Ghonghat Chak O Sajna) Waladi Brothers Part 1/2

Bulleh Shah (1680 1757) (Punjabi: Shahmukhi:بلہے شاہ, Gurmukhi: ਬੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ}}), whose real name was Abdullah Shah [1], was a Punjabi Muslim Sufi poet, a humanist and philosopher. Humanist Bulleh Shahs writings represent him as a humanist, someone providing solutions to the sociological problems of the world around him as he lives through it, describing the turbulence his motherland of Punjab is passing through, while concurrently searching for God. His poetry highlights his mystical spiritual voyage through the four stages of Sufism: Shariat (Path), Tariqat (Observance), Haqiqat (Truth) and Marfat (Union). The simplicity with which Bulleh Shah has been able to address the complex fundamental issues of life and humanity is a large part of his appeal. Thus, many people have put his kafis to music, from humble street-singers to renowned Sufi singers. Bulleh Shahs popularity stretches uniformly across Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims, to the point that much of the written material about this philosopher is from Hindu and Sikh authors. His involvement with atheism did not sit well with the contemporary Muslims, as a result of which few biographies of him from Islamic sources exist. Sufi Fusion - Kafi Shah Hussain - Maharaja Ensemble & ANTONIO EL PIPA FLAMENCO ENSEMBLE

Maharaja - Formerly known as Musafir, Maharaja is a group that gathers the leading musician tribal castes of the desert of India, country of the Kings, Rajasthan, the land of some of the richest and most diverse traditions in Indian art and culture, delimited by the Swamps of Kutch, in Gujarat at South, the Arawalli mountains at East and by the Sindh, in Pakistan in the West. Outrageously elegant and beautiful, malicious and majestic, these musicians, poets and shamans reflect their music and their sumptuous surrounding. A music of ecstasy, a whirlwind of climaxes punctuated by the gentle gesture of a breathtaking tune. An authentic magical experience. The ancestors of these musicians played an important role in spreading the teachings of the many sects of mystics, Sufi and Bhakti movements, through singing ballads and devotional songs. For the warriors, they were familiar figures on the battlefield where their praise of past heroes and their exploits through epic tales, plus their ridicule of the enemy would encourage bravery and boost morale. This hearted music of pure pleasure and pain is highly communicative and captivating for worldwide audiences though it originates from pure no man's land and is the primitive (Jhangra) form of North Indian classical music. ANTONIO EL PIPA FLAMENCO ENSEMBLE from Andalucia, Spain, is one of the most traditional flamenco groups performing today. Born in Jerez, Antonio comes from a family dynasty of Gitano artists, among whom are his ...

Shah Hussain (1538 - 1599) was a Punjabi poet and Sufi saint. He was born in Lahore (present-day Pakistan). His tomb and shrine lies in Baghbanpura, adjacent to the Shalimar Gardens. His urs (annual death anniversary) is celebrated at his shrine every year. It is known as "Mela Chiraghan" ("Festival of Lights") and is the second largest festival in Lahore after Basant. It used to be the biggest festival of the Punjab. Shah Hussain's love for a Brahmin boy called "Madho" or "Madho Lal" is famous, and they are often referred to as a single person with the composite name of "Madho Laal Hussain". Madho's tomb lies next to Hussain's in the shrine. Shah Hussain was the pioneer of the kafi form of Punjabi poetry

Songs In Raga Kafi...

All the information and songs are taken from Mr. Rajan Parrkar Music Archive. I have just put them together with visuals. Please visit this link for more music. www.parrikar.org Thanks to Mr. Rajan. Raga Kafi has direct lineage with the folk music of India. Various folk musics (Tappa, Hori, Dadra, Kirtan, devotional songs) from different parts of India are continuously being composed in this raga form for ages. Nowadays, quite a few variations of Kafi exists. Contamination with 'vivadi' swaras are judiciously being used to increase the listening pleasure. This sort of 'forced' contamination has given rise to Mishra Kafi. Hence, a 'pure' form of Kafi is seldom heard in recent performances. Raga Kafi is about love and passion and is used as a basis for many of the lighter songs sung in the thumri style.

Echoes of Sufi Chants - Sohrab Fakir - Kafi Shah Latif

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (16891752) (Sindhi: شاھ عبدالطيف ڀٽائيِ) was a Sufi scholar and saint, and is considered one of the greatest poets of the Sindhi language. He settled in the town of Bhit Shah in Sindh, Pakistan. His most famous written work is the Shah Jo Risalo. His shrine is located in Bhit and attracts hundreds of pilgrims every day. Sohrab Fakir is a Sufi singer.[1] His full name is Sohrab Fakir Khaskhely. He was born in 1934 in Khairpur Mir's. His father, Hamal Fakir, was the disciple of Kush Khair Muhammad Fakir. Sohrab Fakir is recognized as the greatest living Sindhi folk singer[2] in his style of music, playing the yaktaro (single stringed instrument) and chappar (wooden clappers). Sadly, a paralytic stroke recently left Saaiin Sohrab voiceless. He is spending his days at a Sufi shrine in Sindh. Aptly perhaps, the Fakir's rendering of a folk prayer asking for the intercession of the grace of Shah Latif is also included in this collection.

Echoes of Sufi Chants - Kafi Khawaja Farid - Salamat Ali Khan

Ustad Salamat Ali Khan (1934-2001) is one one of most renowned classical singers of Pakistan and Indian Subcontenent. Ustad was born in 1934 in a small place called Sham Chaurasi in District Hoshiarpur of East Punjab. The story goes that his ancestors, Chand Khan and Sooraj Khan, were granted the area of Sham Chaurasi by the Mughal king Akbar. He was seven when, along with his elder brother Nazakat, he made his first public appearance and performed at the har-ballub mela in Punjab in 1940. They sang the morning raga Mian Ki Tori for nearly one hour. Those listening to the two youngsters were grand masters Ustad Abdul Aziz Khan beenkar, Pandit Krishnarao, Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, Ustad Bare Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Tawakkal Husain Khan, Ustad Jamal Khan, Narayanrao Veyas, Mubarak Ali Khan and many others. They heartily applauded the young singers and gave them their blessings. Ustad won many national and internation awards including highest civil honors by Pakistan Government. In September 1978 Salamat suffered a stroke while performing at the Ravi Shankar Hall in London. He took a long time in recovering and managed to make a comeback with a new partner - his son, Sharafat. But the period of glory was almost over. Ustad Salamat Ali Khan was no more the Tansen that he once was. The great singer called it a day on 11 July 2001.
