The Ariondo duo was invited to perform the "Kalamatiano" at the 17th International Viola Congress where they received a standing ovation and consecutve curtain calls for their riveting rendition. STRINGS Magazine writes "...the combination was fresh to the ears." The Journal of American Viola Society says "Kalamatiano projects an urgent energy and instrumental fluency with unusual sonorities. Extremes of dynamics are unexpectedly possible, relying on unexpected sonic occurrences, often delivered in spasms of dexterity at nanosecond speed." Based on folk dance rythms and musical style found in Greek folk music, the work explores asymmetrical patterns, constantly shifting meters, sporadic scale patterns and register changes, accentuated by rhythmic outbursts and dynamic variations. All these techniques are fully utilized and transformed into today's modern musical language. Long melodic lines are interspersed with short motives ping-ponging back and forth from viola to accordion in a virtuosic display. The blending characteristics between the viola and accordion are quite surprising and complimentary where it becomes difficult to distinguish one instrument from the other.
